Compact and powerful, uncompromising and nimble, the New Duster is still distinctively Dacia, but with a fresh edge.

The latest Duster has been given a number of external and interior upgrades. Instantly identifying New Duster are new, squarer headlights, while there’s also revised front end styling to add to the SUV’s purposeful and robust appearance – the look of which has been adopted across the new Dacia range to create the brand’s striking new visual identity.

There’s 16-inch wheels, a high profile for tackling off-road surfaces and wide wheel arches and a prominent grille to complete the New Duster’s exterior look.

In all, the New Duster is designed to fit in with all aspects of family life, suiting the day-to-day needs of driver and passengers — and their budgets — whether they’re in the city or country.

Exterior

Think of an SUV and you’ll probably think of something big and bulky. Not so the Dacia Duster, a car that’s compact, but a true off-road performer nonetheless. Measuring 4.31m long and 1.82m wide, it’s about the same size as a Renault Mégane, which means it’s as happy negotiating urban streets as it is driving off the beaten track.

Its exterior lines are modern, but it’s unmistakeably a tough performer, with a chunky look, courtesy of wide wheel arches, a prominent chrome-trimmed grille and a sump guard. Viewed side-on, Duster’s high ground clearance and protective mouldings flag up its ability to tackle the rough stuff.

All Duster models from Ambiance trim upwards feature body-coloured front and rear bumpers and ride on 16-inch wheels fitted with 215/65R16 tyres, while the wheels can be upgraded from steel to ‘Tyrol’ alloy wheels by going to Lauréate trim.

For an even more purposeful look and practicality, the Duster’s exterior can be upgraded with the Styling Pack option, which includes chrome side bars, chrome front bar, chrome-plated exhaust tailpipe finisher and daytime running lights, and the Touring Pack, which includes tow bar and roof bars.

Fresh for 2017 is the option of Pennine Green, a new deep green metallic paint that adds a touch of elegance to the Duster’s athletic appearance.

5

Interior

The Duster is compact and agile, but inside there’s enough space for everything a family would ever need to transport – even the kitchen sink.

It will easily take five adults and a generous amount of luggage. In fact, it has some 475 litres of boot space and with the seats folded down the Duster can increase that capacity to 1,636 litres.

Maximum figures for the 4x4 versions, which have different rear suspension and come with an emergency spare wheel instead of a tyre repair kit, are 408 litres (seats up) and 1,570 (seats down). With the rear seats folded the load length extends from 992 to 1,760mm, with a maximum width of 1,002mm between the rear wheel arches.

New for 2017, the upholstery options have been expanded with the availability of new part-leather ‘Aspira’ upholstery, which offers more refinement as well as practicality. Meanwhile, the colour of the dashboard has been updated from light grey to dark carbon, and the centre console surround and steering wheel inserts now come in a satin chrome finish.

There’s no more affordable SUV on the market, but that doesn’t make New Duster a make-do motor by any stretch of the imagination.

In line with the rest of the award-winning Dacia range, New Duster features technology that is commonly found in larger and much more expensive vehicles. The advanced features work to enhance the driving experience of New Duster, whether it’s increasing driving confidence and comfort, or entertaining the kids on a long journey.

In addition to a cutting-edge four-wheel drive system that utilises the best technology that Groupe Renault has to offer, the turbocharged 1.2 TCe engine that combines strong performance with optimum efficiency and such ‘big car’ features as DAB radio, cruise control and speed limiter, New Duster notably benefits from the availability of the MediaNav Evolution 7-inch touchscreen multimedia system.

Available as an option on the Lauréate version and standard on the Prestige, MediaNav provides access to useful and practical features including: satellite navigation, Bluetooth® connectivity, USB and AUX ports, steering column-mounted fingertip controls, traffic information and Siri ‘Eyes-free’ for compatible iPhones.

To make manoeuvring even simpler there is also the availability of a reversing camera and Hill Start Assist – once again underlining how Dacia works to equip its vehicles with technology that is more often found in more expensive cars and at no detriment to their outstanding value-for-money.

Efficient engines and advanced transmissions

Using the best of Renault-Nissan Alliance technology, the powertrains within the New Duster provide customers with a choice of three engines, two transmissions and either two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

New Duster benefits from the availability of the 1.2 TCe 125 engine, ensuring customers enjoy the choice of a petrol or diesel variant at every trim level from Ambiance upwards. This turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol engine provides 125 horsepower with 205Nm of torque at 4,000rpm and offers combined NEDC fuel consumption of 46.3mpg (4x2 version) and CO2 emissions of 138g/km. For 4x2 versions, the engine powers the Duster from 0-62mph in 10.4 seconds, while for 4x4 models it takes 11 seconds.

The engine line-up is completed with the 1.6 SCe 115 petrol engine and the well-proven 1.5 dCi 110 engine.

Introduced to the Duster range in 2015, the 1.6 SCe 115 petrol engine returns 44.1mpg (combined NEDC) with CO2 emissions of 145g/km. Figures for 4x4 versions are 155g/km and 41.5mpg. The power and torque of the engine allows front-wheel drive versions to tow up to 1,500kg, putting it on par with their 4x4 counterparts.

The 1.5 dCi 110 is the Renault Group’s best-selling diesel engine and it’s well-suited to the Duster with its sub-1,300kg kerb weight torque of 260Nm. NEDC combined fuel consumption is 64.2mpg in 4x2 models and 60.1mpg in 4x4s; CO2 emissions are 115g/km and 123g/km respectively.

With the advent of New Duster, the 1.5 dCi 110 turbodiesel engine is available with the automatic six-speed EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) transmission on Lauréate and flagship Prestige 4x2 variants.

Perfectly complementing each other, the pairing returns fuel economy of 62.8mpg (NEDC Combined) and CO2 emissions of 116g/km. There’s no jerking or loss in acceleration thanks to its fast and smooth upshift.

Combining the comfort and smoothness of an automatic gearbox with fuel economy and low CO2 emissions that are similar to those of a manual gearbox, the EDC transmission ensures drivers can enjoy a more relaxing, simpler and smoother drive, which is boosted with Hill Start Assist. When moving away on a slope, the EDC control unit holds the brakes for sufficient time to allow the driver to apply the throttle before the vehicle rolls back.

As standard, New Duster comes with a six-speed manual transmission, except for the SCe 115 4x2 petrol model, which has a five-speed gearbox.

The 4x4 models use the TL8 six-speed manual transmission which has been developed from the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s high volume TL4 unit. It has a shorter first gear ratio better suited to off-road demands such as hill starts, steep descents or accelerating when towing. The unit is also very compact and, compared with a heavier transfer box system, it doesn’t compromise cabin space and keeps costs down.

Chassis and driving dynamics

The Duster is built on Dacia’s B0 platform, which has proven strength, reliability and built-to-last quality. The front MacPherson strut-type suspension, like that in the Logan and Sandero, has been strengthened to cope with off-road driving.

The 4x4s have a multi-arm arrangement at the rear that was specially developed for the Duster, while the 4x2 models have a programmed-deflection H-beam that is also strong, but allows for a larger boot.

Both formats deliver a comfortable ride and allow the kind of ground clearance that’s a hallmark of Duster’s genuine SUV character. Its built-in toughness has been tested to the limit over the equivalent of more than 2.5 million miles in the most demanding climates and driving conditions.

Most UK Duster sales are 4x2 – front-wheel-drive – models, but the car is also the best 4x4 for all-round value in terms of size, price and equipment.

Duster is no soft-roader. It makes use of proven Renault-Nissan Alliance all-wheel-drive technology. When heading off-road there’s a selectable three-mode system that lets owners switch from 2WD drive to Auto or Lock to suit the conditions, using a control on the centre console. 2WD mode locks the drivetrain in front-wheel drive, which is ideal for good driving surfaces and getting the maximum fuel economy with the lowest CO2 emissions.

In Auto mode the front/rear torque split is automatically calculated according to the grip available. It delivers the best compromise between road-holding and traction, even in low-grip conditions. In normal driving, all drive goes through the front axle, but as soon as any traction is lost, or when extra grip is needed, some of the torque is sent to the rear wheels using an electromagnetic torque converter supplied by Nissan.

In Lock mode the driver can electronically lock the transmission for 4x4 operation, with throttle control and braking also adapted to suit all-wheel drive. This is best used in snow, mud, dirt and sand at low speeds.

As well as having the right drivetrain, the Duster has a generous 210 mm of ground clearance and short front (822 mm) and rear (820 mm) overhangs that enable 30° approach and 36° departure angles and a 23° ramp angle. Wading depth is 350 mm.

The Duster is equipped with ventilated front disc brakes – 269 x 22.4mm on the SCe115 petrol models and 280 x 24mm on the rest. All models feature 9-inch rear drums, the brakes being hidden behind the standard 16-inch wheels – steel or alloy according to grade – fitted with 215/65R16 tyres.

Power-assisted hydraulic steering is standard, with 3.3 turns lock-to-lock. The Duster’s turning circle is a neat 10.44 metres between kerbs or 10.76 metres between walls.

Dacia’s ethos is to keep things rugged, robust and no-nonsense — so the line-up is no different.

There are four simple trim levels to choose from; Access, Ambiance, Lauréate and Prestige versions all offering two- and four-wheel drive. There are three engines, automatic or manual transmissions and a number of well-considered accessories.

Standard safety features include ABS and Emergency Brake Assist, ESC/ASR (Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control) and ISOFIX points in the rear, while rear parking sensors are also available for the first time as a factory-fit option. A rear parking camera is now available as an option on Lauréate trim and above.

Standard equipment on the Duster has been upgraded for 2017. Notably, DAB radio is now standard from Ambiance trim. Core features on all versions also include body-coloured front and rear bumpers, height-adjustable front headrests and seat belts, ECO mode and gearshift indicator, a Thatcham-approved engine

immobiliser, automatic door lock, a tyre inflation kit (4x2 models) and emergency spare wheel (4x4 models). New for 2017, the top-of-the-range Prestige version benefits from such additions as 16-inch ‘Tyrol’ diamond-cut alloy wheels, MediaNav Evolution (7-inch touchscreen multimedia system with satellite navigation) and rear-parking camera as standard.

The peace-of-mind new vehicle warranty is for three years/60,000 miles, with a two-year paint warranty and six years’ anti-corrosion cover. If owners want a longer warranty they can opt for with 5-year/60,000-mile and seven-year/100,000-mile extended packages.

Dacia Assistance is provided as part of Dacia’s new vehicle package for the first three years/60,000 miles. The service operates all day every day and is provided in partnership with the RAC.

Technical Specifications

21

The Duster project was a close collaboration between Renault Technology Romania and the central design and engineering teams at Le Losange (“the diamond”, named after the famous Renault badge) – the enormous research and development facility once known as the Technocentre, just outside Versailles. Le Losange looked after the initial design, with engineering development carried out in Romania. In the run-up to the production-ready model, the company’s satellite design centre in the heart of Bucharest was also involved.

A new body shop was built at Pitesti specifically for Duster and the main assembly line was modified so that it could handle the new powertrains and 4x4 transmissions. In all, €290 million – about £232 million – was invested in the Duster project, with just less than €70 million (£56 million) spent on the

production centre. Costs were minimised thanks to a high level of carry-over parts: more than 50 per cent of Duster components are shared with other Dacia and Renault vehicles.

The right-hand-drive Duster has been built at the Pitesti plant in Romania since 2014, production switching from the Renault-Nissan Alliance factory in Chennai, India, that had manufactured these Dusters since summer 2012.

Duster’s role as a truly international model has seen further production sites come on stream around the globe. These sites now include Curitiba in Brazil, to supply the South American market, and the Avtoframos plant in Moscow.

1966 Dacia, a state-owned Romanian company based at Pitesti, begins manufacturing the Renault 8 under licence (renamed Dacia 1100) and the Renault 12 in 1969 (renamed Dacia 1300).

2012 On June 28, Dacia makes its UK public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed’s Moving Motor Show, and 50 competition winners get the chance to drive it around the estate. In October, 1,000 Duster pre-orders are taken in the UK in just over 100 days, and the car wins three awards — including the overall title — at the Scottish Car of the Year awards. By the end of the year, the Duster section of the Dacia website becomes the most visited model section of any auto website in the UK.

1998 Privatisation of Dacia – Renault takes an initial 51 per cent equity stake (increased to 99.3 per cent by 2004).

2013 In January, right-hand drive Duster is launched in the UK. Additionally, the first UK Dacia advert is aired, while figures from residual value providers, CAP, reveal Duster to be one of UK’s least depreciating new cars. In September, the facelifted Duster unveiled at Frankfurt Motor Show.

2009 Duster unveiled and production begins at the Pitesti factory in Romania

2014 In January, ESC and ASR Traction Control becomes standard across the range. Gearshift indicator and ECO mode also introduced. Affordable MediaNav touchscreen infotainment system option launched on UK model, plus cruise control/speed limiter available for Lauréate grades. In September, 2015 New Duster versions introduced featuring a package of styling, trim and equipment upgrades with no increase in price. UK production moves to Pitesti, Romania – bringing quicker UK customer lead times.

2015 Brand new 1.6 16V 115 petrol engine replaces former 1.6 16V 105 unit, and with EU6 emissions controls there are spectacular reductions in fuel consumption and emissions. Dacia therefore decided to increase its number of petrol offerings by introducing 1.6-litre Ambiance versions. The 1.5-litre dCi 110 engine also becomes EU6-compliant, with improvements in economy and emissions.

2016 The 2017 MY Duster is unveiled, introducing revised styling, enhanced equipment and the availability of the Prestige level of trim, TCe 125 engine and EDC automatic gearbox.
