Li fe in Saudi Arabia
Everything in Saudi is regulated by the five daily prayers. All
shops and offices close during each prayer time for a period of
at least 20-30 minutes, However, shopping malls, hospitals
and airports do stay open (but with all shops inside the shop-
ping malls closed) and taxis and other public transport contin-
ue to run normally.
Dress Code in Saudi Arabia
Not sure on what you should be wearing while living in or visit-
ing the Kingdom? Here's our guide ...
The Dress Code in Saudi Arabia is quite strict . while expats
are given some leeway, especially within their compounds,
however they are expected to follow the dress code when out
in public, or expats, men are required to wear long trousers
and a shirt Shorts, singlet and going topless are unacceptable
for men and should not be worn in public at all. Expat men are
not required to wear traditional attire.
It is the law in Saudi Arabia for expat women to wear an
ABAYA ( long black dress/cloak covering the entire body)
when they are out in public. The abaya should cover their
everyday clothing. It is recommended that women wear
respectable clothing under their abaya in the form of a long
loose-fitting skirt or trousers and a top that covers the
shoulders and chest
Weather
Average weather in Dammam, Saudi Arabia is
minimum 10 °C & maximum 48 °C temperature over the year..
Saudi Holidays
There are only two Islamic holidays that Saudis celebrate. Public
holidays are granted only for Eid ul-Fitr, the feast at the end of the
fasting Month of Ramadan and Eid al-Adha, the Month of al Hajj
(Muslim’s pilgrimage to Makkah). Saudis do not celebrate holidays
like Christmas, New Year, Valentine's Day or Halloween.
There is also one secular holiday: That is Unification of the King-
dom (National Day), on 23 September. Strictly speaking, it's not a
public holiday or a festival, but it's treated rather like one any way.
Holy Month of Ramadan
During the Holy Month of Ramadan, visitors are required to abide
by the restrictions of the fasting Month, at least in public: no eating,
drinking or smoking during the daylight hours. You'll have to do
your preparations: offices and restaurants stay open with limited
hours. After evening prayer, though, all the restaurants in the
bazaar open up and do a roaring trade until the early hours in the
morning. Most of the shops are open as well, and the cool of the
evening makes it a pleasant time to shop. A visitor can have a fine
time joining in on these evenings, however having a quiet breakfast
around ten in your hotel room will suit most visitors better than
rising at four for a big pre-dawn Saudi breakfast.
Hajj
Hajj is the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, the most holy city of
the Muslims; it is the largest annual gathering of people in the
world. The Hajj is a demonstration of the solidarity of the Muslim
people, and their submission to God.
The events of Hajj take place in a five-day period, starting on 8 and
ending on 12 Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth and last month of the
Islamic calendar.
