Buyers expecting the ninth-genera-
tion Accord to be big-ger and bolder will need to adjust their perspective concern-ing one of North America’s most successful sedan and coupe lines.
The U.S.-built (30 years and counting) Accord maintains a con-servative presence, while undergo-ing a metamorphosis in style, fea-tures and running gear. The sedan has shrunk nine centimetres in overall length and loses about two centimetres between the front and rear wheels, while gaining 1.5 cen-timetres in width.
Concurrently, trunk space in-creases by five per cent, thanks to a more compact rear suspension.
The Accord appears more svelte, with less front overhang. The coupe has undergone a more subtle trans-formation and remains one of the most appealing models of its type on the road.
Inside, the artistically sculpted dashboard is thankfully devoid of knob and switchgear clutter.
Drivers will be particularly enam-
ored with the clear and crisp white-on-black centre gauges and the 20-centimetre multi-information display screen.
All passengers are treated to more comfort, with front-seaters enjoying more supportive buckets. There’s also an extra 2.5 centime-tres of legroom for those in back.
The base 2.4-litre four-cylinder makes 185 horsepower (189 for the Sport model), up from 177. The op-tional 278-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 gains a mere seven ponies.
A six-speed gearbox on four-cylin-der Accord sedans and up-level V6 coupes remains available. A contin-uously variable transmission (CVT)
replaces the five-speed automatic option on all four-cylinder models, but a six-speed automatic remains the only choice for V6 sedans and base V6 coupes.
In early 2013, Honda will intro-duce the Accord plug-in hybrid with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder mated with a 124-kilowatt electric motor
for a total of 196 net horsepower. The plug-in can travel up to 24 kilo-metres on electric-only propulsion, operates on grid juice at up to 60 mph (96 km-h) and has a maxi-mum 800-kilometre range.
The clincher is it takes just three hours using120-volt house current to replenish the lithium-ion battery (about 10 minutes for a 50 per cent charge), or about with a 240-volt charger. The plug-in will be fol-lowed by a conventional hybrid, giving the Accord a one-two punch in this category.
Base price (incl. destination): $27,200 (sedan); $27,900 (coupe)Type: Four-door sedan; two-door coupeBase Engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (185)Opt. engines (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (190); 3.5-litre SOHC V6 (278); 2.0-litre DOHC I4 with 124-kilowatt electric motor (196, net)Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-driveTransmissions: Six-speed manu-al; six-speed automatic (opt.); six-speed manual (opt. on V6 coupe)l/100 km (city/highway): 7.8/5.5 (2.4, CVT)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; ABS; traction control; stability controlWeight: 1,470 kg (sedan)
With each successive genera-tion, Honda has tweaked and
honed its full-size people mover to the point that every aspect of the vehicle functions in near-perfect harmony.
The only area of controversy is the unusual hitch in its side flanks (behind the sliding doors) that from certain angles looks as if the rear one-third of the body is mis-aligned with the front two-thirds.
Fortunately, the sharp-looking grille, neatly tapered rear roof pil-lar and the pronounced front fend-ers that make the Odyssey’s stance look solidly planted, offset this illu-sion.
The standard 248-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 features a variable-cyl-inder-management program that seamlessly cuts out two (or three) of the cylinders under light loads
and helps contribute to the mini-van’s impressive fuel rating.
LX, EX and EX-L Odysseys equipped with the five-speed auto-matic transmission are rated at 11.7/7.2 l/100 km city/highway, while the Touring edition’s six-speed automatic helps drop those numbers to 10.9/7.1.
Fuel consumption aside, the Od-yssey drives flat and true with min-imal body roll while turning. Inter-estingly, Honda’s engineers shunned electric power steering in favour of a belt-driven hydraulic system, which they say is sharper and reduces general numbness.
Base models that ring in at $31,600 carry all of the essentials plus a power driver’s seat, keyless entry and cruise control.
From that point the sky is the limit, culminating with the
$48,600 Touring with its self-level-ing headlights, huge (at least in the automotive world) 16.2-inch (41-centimetre) rear-video screen and a 650-watt 12-speaker sur-round-sound system.

Honda continues to define auto standards
CR-V devotees might have diffi-culty spotting the current model
since it closely mirrors the outgoing model in key exterior dimensions.
The overall shape was only mod-erately tinkered-with, including up-dated nose and tail sections plus a dramatically shaped rear roof pillar. Honda claims that the CR-V’s shape, along with modifications to the un-dercarriage to increase airflow, has reduced fuel-robbing aerodynamic drag by eight per cent when com-pared to the previous CR-V.
The interior provides a slightly en-larged passenger area, with slightly reduced cargo space. Maximizing the load floor is a snap with the standard Fold-Down Rear Seat that operates by flipping a pair of levers located just inside the tailgate.
The rest of the cabin is standard Honda fare, which translates into an uncluttered dashboard, comfy, sup-portive seats and generously sized storage compartments, including a large floor-console bin that can hold a purse or other bulky items. Under the hood is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 185 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque.
Fuel-economy is a Honda trade-mark, but the company claims that by activating the ECON button that
alters the transmission and air con-ditioning functions, drivers can save a bit more.
As for function, the lift gate is wide and tall while the cargo area extends more than five feet from the rear with the back seat folded. In base LX trim, the CR-V arrives with a significant amount of standard equipment, while the EX includes a power moonroof, fog lights, naviga-tion and a few other niceties.
Popping for the EX-L adds leather seat covers, 10-way heated driver’s seat, up-level audio system and ac-cess to the optional navigation sys-tem. Touring is the top model.

The mid-size Alti-ma sedan for
2013 presents a more graceful shape that’s sure to find favour with current and po-tential owners.
Most of the basic length/width/height dimensions vary only slight-ly, including a bit wider front and rear track (the distance between the left and right wheels). The well-appointed interior features NASA-inspired “zero-gravity” front-seats for greater comfort. Cabin noise has been reduced with more sound-ab-sorbing materials around the in-strument panel, floor and roof ar-eas and upgrading the engine mounts. The base 2.5-litre four-cyl-inder now delivers 182 horsepower, up from the previous 175 mark, due to a new valvetrain plus peak torque adjustments. In addition, an all-new continuously variable trans-mission (CVT) offers fewer moving parts, significantly reduced friction and electronic control improve-
ments so that it more closely mim-ics a traditional multi-speed auto-matic. Nissan now claims fuel per-formance of 7.4 l/100 km city and 5.0 highway, compared with 8.8/6.2 for the previous Altima. Those numbers also beat current four-cylinder versions of the Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata and Honda Accord. The Altima’s optional
270-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 re-mains unchanged, but it also bene-fits from the same CVT upgrade and is now rated at 9.3 l/100 km city/6.4 highway. Altima now boasts Active Understeer Control that applies light braking pressure to the inside wheel in a corner to counteract the car’s natural tenden-cy to continue in a straight line. Al-
so assisting the driver is Nissan’s Easy Fill Tire Alert that was initially installed in the Quest minivan. In-stead of trying to decipher your tire pressure gauge (especially daunt-ing at night), the horn will sound when the correct amount of infla-tion has been reached. Finally, the Altima’s headlights automatically turn on after the wipers have com-
pleted four cycles, which helps oth-er drivers see you during downpour conditions. The base 2.5 includes all the standard bells and whistles plus a six-way power driver’s seat and keyless start. S and SV models progressively add dual-zone cli-mate control, heated front seats and Bluetooth hands-free connec-tivity with hands-free messaging. Move up to the SL and a leather in-terior, heated steering wheel and a power moonroof are yours. The coupe remains available, but only with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder.
Price (w/destination): $25,000Type: Four-door sedan; two-door coupeBase Engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (182)Optional engine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (270)Layout: Front-engine, FWDTransmissions: Six-speed manu-al; continuously variable (opt.)l/100 km (city/highway): 7.4/5.0 (2.5, CVT)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; trac-tion controlWeight: 1,410 kg
Tennessee-built Pathfinder was virtually untouched since the
2005 model. A robust body-on-frame chassis made it ideal for boulder-bashing, creek-fording ac-tivities.
The 2013 edition has undergone a serious weight-loss regimen, shedding about 110 kilograms (145 kilograms on 4x4 units). Its diet in-cluded converting to a unitized (frameless) platform shared with Nissan’s Infiniti JX luxury wagon and eliminating the 305-horsepow-er-V8 option.
The base 266-horsepower 4.0-litre V6 has also been dropped. In their place resides Nissan’s one-engine-fits-all 3.5-litre V6 that gen-erates 260 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque.
The 3.5 is teamed with a continu-ously variable transmission that re-places the previous five-speed auto-matic. Front-wheel-drive versions are rated at 10.5 l/100 km city and 7.7 highway, while four-wheel-drive Pathfinders achieve 10.8/7.9.
Nissan’s All-Mode 4x4-i option al-lows you to select either two- or four-wheel-drive, or engage the Au-to setting and let the All-Mode make the call, based on which tire(s) has traction.
The new sheetmetal manages a passing resemblance to the outgo-ing rig as far as the grille is con-cerned. But from there, the boxy body of old has given way to gentle, sweeping curves and rounded edg-es. The new Path gains about 13 centimetres in length, 11 centime-tres in width and five centimetres between the front and rear wheels.
Nissan created a third row reclin-ing seat and a second row with 13 centimetres of fore and aft travel, while a portion of the split-second bench slides forward for easier third-row access, even if there’s a child seat attached.
The base Pathfinder S arrives with tri-zone climate control and 14 cup/bottle holders.
The SV adds roof rails and a rearview monitor while leather-cov-
ered seats, remote engine start and a power liftgate are SL highlights. From there the sky’s the limit where the SL Premium, Platinum and Plat-inum Premium trim levels are con-cerned.
An up-level sound system, Around View camera, panorama moonroof and a navigation system are on the menu, depending on the depth of your pockets.
Price (w/destination): $30,200Type: Four-door tall wagonEngine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (260)Layout: Front-engine, two- /four-wheel-driveTransmission: Continuously vari-ablel/100 km (city/hwy.): 10.5/7.7 (FWD)Safety: Front airbags, side-impact airbags; side-curtain air-bags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction controlWeight: 1,900 (est.) kg
Nissan introduces three major upgrades
Nissan has produced a totally new Sentra that, at first blush,
might seem a bit confusing. That’s because the design of the
compact four-door so closely mim-ics the mid-size Altima that, from not too far away, you could easily confuse the two.
They share similar grilles and muscular-looking fenders and the sweep of the roofline that ends at a short rear deck also appears famil-iar. Compared with the outgoing Sentra, the new car is slightly wid-er, lower and longer and has about the same interior volume, but the optical illusion is that it appears larger than it is.
Ultimately, there’s nothing about the Sentra to remind you of the old one. Under the hood is a similar sto-ry. The new 130-horsepower four-cylinder engine replaces the 2.0-litre 140-horse four-cylinder.
But with about 70 kilograms less weight to haul around due to a lightened body structure, you’ll likely never notice the loss in peak power. What you will notice is more cash in your jeans from fewer trips to the gas bar.
Sentras are rated at 6.6 l/100 km city and 4.9 highway. That’s about a 13 per cent improvement compared to the previous rating. Note that to achieve those values you’ll need to
step up to the optional continuously variable transmission, as most buy-ers will do anyway, since the six-speed manual gearbox is standard only on the $16,200 base S model that isn’t all that base.
Standard features include air con-ditioning tilt and telescopic steering column, power windows and door locks and remote keyless entry. Content levels top out at the $24,500 SL with dual-zone climate control, premium sound, 17-inch wheels (16-inch rims are standard), push-button ignition and a fancier interior. You’ll need to head beyond that point to add leather seats, touch-screen navigation, rearview monitor and other niceties.
No SE-R model or Spec V is ex-pected this model year.

The urban jungle is becoming increas-ingly tougher to navigate. Fuel is pric-
ey, the streets are clogged and parking is ri-diculous. Sometimes, survival requires a minimalist transportation module with maximum space for people and cargo. Enter, the Chevro-let Spark. The littlest Chevy’s box design helps it deliver an impressive level of usable volume in the least amount of space. It’s nearly 15 centimetres taller than a Mini Coo-per, but is slightly shorter overall and offers less distance between the front and rear wheels.
Accommodating life’s bulky items is just a split-folding-rear-bench away. The rear door handles have been clev-erly integrated as part of the window frame, giving the car a two-door appearance. Up-level Sparks come with added visual enhancements, including rocker panel moldings, roof rails and chrome trim.
Inside, the single-pod speedometer, adjacent tachome-ter/fuel gauge plus a trio of temperature and ventilation control knobs are a contemporary style.
An eighteen-centimetre touch-screen operating the au-dio, navigation and hands-free communications systems can also be added. In keeping with the Spark’s modest transportation role, a 1.2-litre four-cylinder generates 85 horsepower and 82 pound-feet of torque.
Air conditioning, power windows, ambient interior lighting, front disc brakes and 10 airbags are standard. Options include remote keyless entry, heated front seats, alloy wheels and a premium audio package.

Chevrolet Trax is headed our way but will not sold in the United
States, even though it’s built there. The Trax slots below the Equinox in Chevy’s tall wagon lineup and uses the same platform as the Cruze and Sonic small cars.
It’s nearly 18 centimetres longer and 13 centime-tres taller than a Sonic wagon, which provides plen-ty of space for up to five passengers and a relatively cavernous cargo area, especially with the rear seat folded flat.
In addition, the front-passenger seat folds flat for lengthy items. Exact base and optional content has yet to be announced (the Trax is expected to arrive sometime in the first quarter of 2013), but at least three trim levels and a lengthy list of options are likely, with base models covering the basics plus air conditioning plus the usual power-operated win-dows, locks and outside mirrors.
Standard for all trims is a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 140 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque.
A six-speed automatic is the sole transmission choice. Front-wheel-drive is also standard, while all-wheel-drive will be offered at extra cost.
Exact Trax pricing will be revealed closer to its actual launch date, but somewhere near the mid-$25,000 range (including delivery to the dealer) would be a reasonable guess.
Base price (incl. destination): $24,500 (est.)Type: Four-door wagon sub-compact tall wagonEngine (hp): 1.4-litre DOHC I4 (140) Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-driveTransmission: Six-speed automaticl/100 km (city/highway): 7.5/5.2 (est.)Safety: Front airbags; front/rear side-impact air-bags; front knee airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability controlWeight: 3,000 kg (est.)
The Volt’s biggest positive has been its have-cake-and-eat-it-
too technology. The on-board batteries provide
power to the electric motor for about 65 kilometres of combined city/highway driving, after which a 1.4-litre four-cylinder gasoline gen-erator engine kicks in to charge the lithium-ion battery pack.
Total range is estimated at about 500 kilometres before the genera-tor engine needs refueling with premium gas or the 180-kilogram T-shaped battery located beneath the floor needs charging.
Fuel economy is an obsolete term as it pertains to the Volt, although it’s claimed that the operational cost per kilometre with electricity is a fraction of that of a regular in-ternal combustion engine. When the generator is called in to charge the batteries, the common number used is about 5.0 l/100 km.
The generator engine is rated at 60 kilowatts, or the equivalent of 80 horsepower, while the electric motor produces 111 kilowatts (150 horsepower) and 273 pound-feet of torque.
The one aspect of the Volt that’s similar to a conventional hybrid is that battery charging occurs when the brakes are used. A single-speed controller replaces a traditional transmission to engage the front drive wheels.
However, the operator can select Normal, Sport or Mountain mode with the latter providing extra power on steep grades.
Commuters who want to simply plug in the Volt each night for the next day’s drive need no special gear as they can tap right into a standard 120-volt electrical outlet that charges the batteries in about 10.5 hours.
However that time is cut to three
to four hours when using the op-tional 240-volt charging “station” (which costs about $2,000, in-stalled).
On the road, the only sound is the whirring electric motor, and even that noise is muted through the use of special sound-deadening
materials. However, drivers can ac-tivate a warning horn “chirp” to alert pedestrians that the silent-running Volt is nearby.

Spelling it out in capital let-ters, the brand new ATS’s
primary target is B-M-W, specifi-cally the 3 Series. But the Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, In-finiti G37 sedan and Lexus IS se-ries are also in Caddy’s sights.
The ATS is about 23 centime-tres shorter than the CTS, three centimetres narrower and about five centimetres less tall.
It also surrenders 10 centime-tres between the front and rear wheels, which could make for a tighter cabin space than the CTS.
Where the ATS really excels is its 1,500 kg curb weight.
Part of the dieting process in-volved an aluminum hood, nat-ural-fibre door panels and mag-nesium engine-mount brackets.
Although the ATS is available with a relatively potent 321-horsepower 3.6-litre V6, Cadillac two four-cylinder en-gines are on the list. Base cars get a 202-horsepower 2.5-litre unit, while a 2.0-litre turbo-charged four-cylinder is option-al.
The turbo’s 272 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque would appear to trump similar-ly-sized turbo-fours employed in the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series and could give the ATS some all-important street cred.
All powerplants are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions, but in keeping with its performance nature (and to sway Euro-sedan fans) the turbo engine is available with a six-speed manual gearbox.
Regardless of drivetrain, that the ATS’s sporty demeanor can be amplified with an optional suspension package that in-cludes driver-adjustable shocks, larger Brembo-brand brakes and magnetic ride control that constantly adjusts the suspen-sion characteristics according to road conditions and driver in-put.

Hyundai has been readying itself to better take on competitors such as Honda by
expanding the successful Elantra line to in-clude a two-door coupe and four-door hatch-back.
The newcomers share the swoops-and-swirls theme that’s visible along the Elantra sedan’s flanks while mimicking the more ag-gressive front-end style of the Veloster Turbo. Blacked-out grilles and unique wheel de-signs are another area of differentiation, but from the back, the Coupe is awfully similar to the sedan and identical in both interior and exterior dimensions.
The GT is slightly shorter, but its expanded cargo area allows for 650 litres of room with the rear seats up (compared with 425 litres for the sedan/Coupe) and more than 1,400 litres with them folded flat. The Elantra’s 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine puts out 148 horsepower (145 horsepower for states that require partial-zero-emissions tuning), and is at 6.8 l/100 km in the city and a seriously impressive 4.9 l/100 km on the highway with the standard six-speed manual transmission (6.9/4.9 with optional six-speed automatic).
All three Elantras use the same ultra-mod-
ern dashboard and cabin design and it’s a genuine work of art. Base Elantra L sedan models include the usual power-operated as-sortment of features plus a six-speaker audio system, but no air conditioning.
The GT hatchback joins in at the GL trim level (which gets air conditioning) while the Coupe joins in one more notch up at the GLS level, which means the Coupe has the high-est starting price of the three.
After the GLS, the sedan tops out at the Limited, while the GT and the Coupe end at SE, which are just as loaded up as the Limit-ed sedan is.
Base (w/destination): $17,450 (sedan); $21,450 (Coupe); $20,650 (GT)Type: Mid-size four-door sedan/hatch, two-door coupeEngine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 (148) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-driveTransmission: Six-speed manual; opt. six-speed automaticl/100 km (city/hwy.): 6.8/4.9 (MT)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; trac-tion control; stability controlWeight: 1,210 kg
In a funny piece of product planning, the 4.6-litre V8 that wowed everyone when it de-
buted in the Genesis in 2009 is now history. The only V8 Hyundai offers in 2013 is the R-Spec, which uses a 429-horsepower 5.0-litre.
The company must figure that last year’s upgraded V6 engines, which now put out 333 horsepower, are grunty enough. Direct injection more precisely sprays fuel into the combustion chambers as opposed to up-stream in the intake manifold.
The company’s own eight-speed automatic transmission on every model also boosts fu-el economy. The performance-oriented R-Spec is designed to fight the BMW M cars and Mercedes-Benz AMGs. In true hot-rod style, the R-Spec stuffs in a tuned version of the flagship Equus’s 5.0-litre V8 and the car can turn, too, thanks to unique suspension,
transmission and steering settings that bet-ter reflect the R-Spec’s goals.
Visually, it’s distinguished with 19-inch wheels and darker headlight inserts. Both V6 and V8 models are well equipped, but new for 2013 is an optional eight-inch dis-play with navigation that’s easier to use.
Base (w/destination): $41,750; $55,250 (R-Spec)Type: Four-door sedanEngine (hp): 3.8-litre DOHC V6 (333) with optional 5.0-litre DOHC V8 (429, R-Spec)Layout: Front engine, rear-wheel-driveTransmission: Eight-speed automaticl/100 km (city/highway): 11.1/6.9 (3.8)Safety: Front and side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; rear-side impact airbags; ABS; traction control; stability controlWeight: 1,735 kg
Two sizes of Hyundai’s 2013 San-ta Fe are on the menu, a concept
that has proven popular with other automakers. Mitsubishi did this for the 2011 RVR, which is a shorter Outlander.
General Motors does the same with its Tahoe/Suburban big rigs and a number of minivans once of-fered similar long/short choices.
For 2013 the shorter-wheelbase five-passenger Santa Fe Sport arrives first, followed by the longer (by 22 centimetres) seven-passenger Santa Fe in early calendar 2013. The bigger Santa Fe is heftier than the Sport by more than 150 kilograms, which ex-plains why it’s only available with a 290-horsepower 3.3-litre V6 that re-
places the previously optional 274-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. Con-versely, the Sport comes with a base 190-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylin-
der, or optional 264-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. In all cases the only transmission is a six-speed automatic with manual
shift controls. Hyundai will let you add its latest all-wheel-drive setup with any Santa Fe you select.
The system includes Torque Vec-toring Corner Control that monitors conditions and instantaneously di-rects the correct amount of power or braking force to any one wheel.
TVCC assists in slippery conditions and provides added precision in turns. Santa Fe features plenty of standard content plus unexpected treats, including Driver Selectable Steering Mode with Normal, Com-fort (reduces steering effort by 10 per cent) and Sport (increases effort by the same amount) settings.
Turbo models add performance, stiffer shocks, stabilizers, 19-inch
wheels (17s are standard), fancier gauge cluster, heated front seats and push-button start.

Dodge Dart
A major series of upgrades for the Ram pickup includes a
lighter, stronger frame, more aerodynamic body and a more-ef-ficient base engine.
The previous 3.7-litre V6 is re-placed with a 305-horsepower Chrysler 3.6-litre V6; eight-speed automatic transmission and other countermeasures help reduce fuel consumption; Hemi V8 will get the eight-speed automatic also.
Ram 1500 competes in the three-horse truck race against Ford and Chevrolet/GMC, and it sells in respectable quantities. Fu-el consumption has been im-proved for 2013 with Chrysler’s popular 3.6-litre V6.
Horsepower climbs 42 per cent to 305 and fuel performance im-proves to 11.4 l/100 km city and 7.8 highway.
Along with a more efficient V6, the Ram gets a new eight-speed automatic transmission that will also be attached to the 395-horse-power 5.7-litre Hemi V8.
It can shut down four of its eight cylinders when not needed, such as at under light-load conditions or when headed downhill. A dash-mounted rotary shifter replaces the traditional column and con-
sole shifter. Returning in limited use is the 4.7-litre V8 rated at 310 horsepower. It’s linked to a six-speed automatic.
For 2013, Rams get further fuel-reduction assistance including stop-start technology that turns off the engine at rest, then in-stantly fires it up again once the brake pedal is released.
Electric power steering cuts par-asitic power losses. Subtle aerody-namic body improvements and ac-tive grille shutters help, too.
Optional is an air suspension with load leveling and five height settings, one of which lowers the body at highway speeds by 1.5 centimetres to cut the wind a bit better.
Finally, a new thermal manage-ment system is designed to quick-ly get the Ram’s crankcase oil and other fluids up to operational tem-peratures, which assists in con-serving gas. Rams now ride on a lighter (by 14 kilograms) and stronger frame and the use alumi-num suspension components save another 12 kilograms.
As for body styles, regular- cab models are available with six-foot, four-inch (193-centimetre) or eight-foot-long (244-centimetre)
pickup beds, while Quad Cabs are attached to the shorter box only.
Ram Crew gets you a five-foot, seven-inch (170-centimetres) bed, or a new-for-2013 six-foot, four-inch (193-centimetre) bed option.
There are also available locking storage compartments built into the rear fenders and can be speci-fied with centrally controlled power locks. Buyers can choose a part-time 4WD system or an on-demand setup that automatically engages when road conditions warrant.

Talk about a marriage: Chrysler pulls out a name from the past
and merges it with it a modified Alfa Romeo platform.
Base and optional four-cylinder engines, range from 160 to 184 horsepower, with six-speed manual or automatic transmissions (except top-level R/T that uses a twin-clutch automated manual).
The creation of the new Dodge Dart has everything to do with both Chrysler/Dodge and Alfa Romeo being a part of the Italy-based Fiat automotive group. Although the Dart and Alfa’s Giulietta share the same basic platform, the Dart has its own distinctive sheetmetal, inte-rior and powerplant selection.
It is also built at a Chrysler assem-bly plant in Illinois. The Dart’s im-portance can’t be overstated, since Chrysler hasn’t had a compact se-dan in play for about seven years.
The Dart name will probably res-onate with older customers, al-though many younger car buyers may miss the connection.
Turning a Giulietta into a Dart in-volved increasing the platform length by 30 centimetres inches and the width by five centimetres.
The result, claims Dodge, is a car with segment-leading scale, beat-
ing such small-car luminaries as the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Hyun-dai Elantra and Chevrolet Cruze.
The cabin design is a standout, with futuristic gauges, non-tradi-tional control-panel displays and a unique storage area beneath the front passenger seat-cushion.
The base engine is a 160-horse-power 2.0-litre four-cylinder that’s
standard with SE, SXT, Rallye and Limited trim levels. All can be up-graded to a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that’s rated at the same 160 horses, but leads in the torque department with 184 pound-feet to 145.
Exclusive to the sportier R/T is a 184-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylin-der. All three choices represent
pretty powerful stuff for this class, which will be important as even the lightest Dart out-hefts most of its peers by a good 150 kilograms.
A six-speed manual transmission is standard with all engines, while a six-speed automatic is optional with all but the R/T’s 2.4-litre unit.
That engine can be had with an available six-speed automated
manual gearbox. Base Darts are pretty basic, but on par with others in the category.
The options list incorporates air conditioning, heated steering wheel, driver-selectable informa-tion screen, push-button start, soft Nappa leather seat covers, backup camera and trailer sway control that prevents your load from wig-gling about.

New Dodge Dart draws on Alfa Romeo
To stay on top as an off-roader, Jeep Wrangler introduces signif-
icant comfort and convenience im-provements for 2013, despite doing a lot over the last couple of years.
The 3.6-litre V6 makes 285 horse-power and 260 pound-feet of torque; six-speed manual transmis-sions, or optional five-speed auto-matics play their part to minimize fuel consumption.
The combo provides for a l/100 km rating of 12.7 city and 9.3 high-way (Unlimited models drink a little more).
You could refer to the Jeep Wran-gler as the Volkswagen Beetle of the sport-utility world for its longevity.
The legendary off-roader enjoys a hard-core following: people who fearlessly dare to use these rugged rascals the way they’re intended.
Of course not everyone goes boul-der-hopping and canyon-crawling in their Wranglers (the Jeep, not the jeans).
But both groups will appreciate the newly designed seats with im-proved bolstering (and available Katzkin-brand black leather) in front and added support when the rough gets rougher.
The back seat of the four-door Un-limited model as well as the soft top both fold easily using just one hand.
And both two- and four-door Wranglers can be ordered with a premium top that’s claimed to be easier to clean while its three layers add a degree of noise insulation.
Jeep claims the lid is also easier to fasten.
Base Sport, Sport, Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon trim levels continue; the first two feature part-time four-wheel-drive with optional limited-slip rear differential.
The tough-customer Rubicon uses the Off-Road Rock-Trac unit with its extra-low-range gearing, front/rear-locking differentials for greater agil-ity and 32-inch off-road rubber.

Ford’s latest Escape represents a clean-sheet design-and-content ap-
proach to satisfy the needs of buyers around the world.
The sleeker look is radically different from the outgoing version’s boxiness, however, its slightly larger dimensions give it more rear-seat room plus slightly more passenger and cargo volume with the rear seat in place or folded flat.
The interior is certainly inviting, with an attractively segmented gauge/control panel with asymmetric air vents.
The floor shifter’s position at the base of the dashboard partially blocks the heating/ventilation controls, but makes the area designated for cupholders and armrest/storage more accessible.
The Titanium model features well-bol-stered front seats that are a major ad-vancement. The base front-wheel-drive S model runs with a 168-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder, while the front- and all-wheel-drive SE designation uses a 178-horsepower 1.6-litre turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder.
A 237-horsepower turbo four-cylinder (also an EcoBoost) is standard on the SEL and Titanium.
A new Intelligent all-wheel-drive sys-tem can be ordered with turbocharged models. It continually assesses road con-ditions and driver inputs “about 20 times faster than the blink of an eye” and can shift up to 100 per cent of the available power to either the front or rear wheels for maximum grip.
Escape is the first Ford with both Torque Vectoring Control and Curve Control to distribute the correct amount of power to each wheel when cornering so that the vehicle maintains its intended path. Coolest option when your hands are full? Foot-operated power liftgate.
Base price (w/destination): $23,050Type: Four-door compact tall wagonEngine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (168)Opt. engines (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (173); 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (237)Layout: Front-engine, FWD/4WD Transmission: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/hwy.): 9.5/6.3 (2.5, FWD)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact air-bags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction controlWeight (kg): 1,590
C-Max and its plug-in Energi counterpart represent Ford’s
first dedicated hybrid brand, based on the compact Focus architecture and with the same distance between the front and rear wheels and over-all length as the Focus.
However, the C-Max is 11 centi-metres wider and 16 centimetres taller. Visually, C-Max also shares a kinship with Focus, notwithstanding the massive windshield that pro-vides an unencumbered vista for all occupants. Cargo space is about equal to that of the Toyota Prius v wagon, but with the rear seat folded flat, C-Max has nearly one-third more space than its chief rival.
Note, however, that the C-Max En-ergi, with its more-massive power, reduces overall cargo volume by
about 20 per cent. The flight-deck-style dashboard and control panel on both would look at home in the Starship Enterprise. The centre stack houses a 20-centimetre touch-screen for climate, audio, hands-free phone and navigation controls and
doubles as a backup camera that’s also standard. Meanwhile, the gauge pod provides real-time fuel-economy readouts and driving effi-ciency as indicated by the number of green leaves displayed on an adja-cent screen. There’s also a Brake
Coach to maximize the regener-ative braking system, keep the lithium-ion batteries topped up and maximize driving range.
C-Max powertrains consist of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that produces 141 horsepower, working with a 106-horsepower electric motor. The net system output is 188 horsepow-er, which is 54 more ponies than the competing Prius v.
A continuously variable transmis-sion turns the front wheels. Fuel economy is 4.0 l/100 km in the city (4.1 highway) for both city and highway, compared with 4.3/4.8 for the Prius v. Ford claims the Energi can run up to 135 km/h on battery power alone and more than triple the Prius Plug-in’s maximum elec-tric-only range (32 versus 10 kilo-
metres). The base C-Max SE in-cludes dual-zone climate control, 17-inch alloy wheels and seven air-bags. SEL adds leather seats (heated in front), 10-way power driver’s seat, rain-sensing wipers and satel-lite radio. Optional liftgate opens and closes with a wave of your foot.
Base (w/destination): $28,750Type: Tall compact wagonEngine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 with electric motor (188, net)Layout: Front-engine, FWDTransmission: Continuously vari-able l/100 km (city/highway): 4.0/4.1Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; front knee airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability controlWeight: 1,640 kg
New C-Max, Escape show Ford innovation
The next-generation Ford’s Fusion represents a merging of high-fashion with game- altering fuel economy and
technological treats. The sedan’s primary eye-catcher is the dramatic roofline, suggesting kinship with the Audi A7, Volkswagen CC and CLS-class Mercedes-Benz.
Fusion’s fashion statement extends from the new open-mouth grille to the cabin’s fancier trim, seats and control panel. Ford’s tailors also let out Fusion’s pants and lengthened the cuffs, gaining five inches between the front and rear wheels and an inch to the width and height. Fusion joins the Hyundai Sonata and 2013 Chevrolet Malibu in abandoning a V6 option, but there will be five engines, including two Prius-like gasoline-electric hybrids. It all begins with a 170-horsepower, 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, while1.6- and 2.0-litre turbocharged EcoBoost engines (179 and 237-horse-power, respectively) are optional.
The 1.6 is the thriftiest, but in terms of fuel savings, the Hybrid and all-new Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid are where it’s at. They arrive in early 2013 with a 141-horse-power 2.0-litre four-cylinder and an electric motor to produce 188 net horsepower. The system increases max-imum electric-only velocity to 100 km/h from the previ-ous 75, and resets the fuel-economy bar to 4.0 l/100 km in the city and 4.1 on the highway from 4.6/5.4. The Hy-brid also bests Toyota Camry Hybrid’s 4.5/4.7 rating.
Newly available communications and safety content includes keep-you-in-line lane-monitoring system, keep-your-distance adaptive cruise control, confidence-boost-ing parking-spot assist and shoulder-check-augmenting blind spot and cross-traffic alerts.
Buyers can also order Ford’s latest SYNC voice-con-trolled communications and entertainment wizard.

Ford C-Max
Ford’s plan for its best-selling F-150 is a simple pattern: update the features
one year, revise the engines the next. Renew trim and technology occasional-ly. Repeat.
For 2013, Ford is betting that a sharp-er-looking F-150 and reintroducing the full-lux Limited trim will lure even more customers. All models get new trim-spe-cific front grilles, bumpers and wheel designs, but the Limited sure is a head-turner. Available only as a SuperCrew four-door cab, the body-colour mold-ings, brightwork and 22-inch wheels are set off by segment-first high-intensity-discharge headlights. The interior is highlighted by heated and cooled red and black leather seats, aluminum trim and piano black accents that comple-ment the new MyFord Touch screen on the dash. Limiteds are only powered by the popular 3.5-litre EcoBoost twin-tur-bo V6 with 365 horsepower. But that’s more than enough: most F-150’s sold have a six-cylinder base 3.7-litre engine or the optional EcoBoost.
Those wanting V8 power are spoiled, too, with 5.0-litre or 6.2-litre options available in most other trims.
The sheer number of F-150 combos is mind-boggling. Not including paint colours and interior trims, there are four box lengths and three cab sizes, not to mention both rear- and four-wheel-drive availability.
Base w/destination): $21,600Type: Two- /four-door pickupBase (hp): 3.7-litre DOHC V6 (302)

Sorento remains a stylish, comfortable machine that takes its highway-cruis-
ing role seriously, regardless of weather or road status. The 2013 edition, avail-able in front- or all-wheel-drive, also of-fers a split-folding third-row-seating op-tion for folks needing to transport up to seven passengers.
Buyers can choose a base 175-horse-power 2.4-litre four-cylinder or a 191-horsepower direct-fuel-injection version of the 2.4 and a 276-horsepower 3.5-litre V6.
All three are closely matched in terms of fuel performance, although the di-rect-injection four-cylinder does hit 9.5 l/100 km on highway. Ultimately, your final choice will likely boil down to af-fordability and the amount of grunt you require.
A six-speed automatic is the sole transmission available, while all-wheel-drive is available with any engine.
Standard LX features — four-cylinder and V6 in front-wheel-drive only — in-clude air conditioning, tilt and telescopic steering column and steering-wheel-lo-cated audio controls.
The EX means you get all-wheel-drive, bigger wheels, leather seats, dual-zone climate control and pushbutton start.
The EX V6 Luxury adds panoramic sun-roof, navigation with rear-view camera and a power passenger seat.
The top model is the SX, which is what it will take for you to get the third-row seat.
The only other model where it can be added is the EX V6 Luxury as an extra-cost option.
Base price (w/destination): $28,300Type: Four-door tall wagon Base Engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC
inline-4 (175) Opt. engines (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (191); 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (276) Layout: Front-engine, front- /four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed automaticl/100 km (city/highway): 9.5/6.2 (2.4, FWD) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact air-bags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control Weight: 1,720 kg
You could spend about $15,500 on a prac-tical and smart-looking Kia Rio sedan or
hatchback (below). Or, you could do some-thing a little different for a a few thousand more and put a 2013 Soul in your driveway.
Their skill sets are similar with the nod go-ing to the Rio for fuel economy, while the Soul makes a much bigger fashion statement while providing a more-powerful engine op-tion. Tasteful design and decent function highlight the 2013 Soul that continues into the new model year after an inside/outside refresh for 2012. The entry-level 1.6-litre four-cylinder was taken from the Rio sedan and produces 138 horsepower, while the op-tional 2.0-litre delivers 164. A six-speed manual transmission is standard while a six-speed automatic is optional, but standard on the higher trims. The base 1.6 L model has a
fair amount of equipment (power items, heated seats and Bluetooth connectivity), but
no air conditioning. For that, you’ll have to get the Soul 2u, which also adds the bigger
engine, wild-patterned seat fabric and bigger wheels. The Soul 4u adds even bigger wheels, premium audio, sport-tuned suspen-sion, backup camera. The 4u Luxury adds navigation, leather seats and climate control. Fully loaded, you’re near $30,000, the higher end of the Optima range.
Base price (incl. destination): $18,450Type: Four-door, five-passenger front-wheel-drive compact/tall wagon Base Engine (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4 (138) Opt. engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (164) Layout: Front engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 7.4/5.6 (1.6, MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; trac-tion/stability controlWeight: 1,190 kg
Soul and other Kias keep brand thriving
If you’ve been wondering who lit the fire under Kia’s rear bumper, the most likely person is designer Peter
Schreyer, previously with Audi. That’s right, Kia has a hotshot German designer and one of his best creations to date is the Optima.
Optima shares the related Hyundai Sonata’s range of powerful four-cylinder engines: the entry-level is a 2.4-litre unit that produces a very healthy 200 horse-power, while an optional 274-horsepower turbo-charged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine quenches your thirst for thrust. There’s also a hybrid-electric version of the 2.4, but with only 169 horses (206 total with the electric motor).
As you might expect, the hybrid is the most fuel effi-cient (5.6 l/100 km city and 4.9 highway) but even the base engine produces a respectable 8.7 l/100 km in the city and 5.7 on the highway. Most interesting is that the hybrid system uses unique lithium-polymer batteries that are lightweight and can actually be formed into shapes.
The hybrid can travel up to 60 mph (96 km/h) with-out the gas engine assisting. Kia’s reputation is built on value, and the Optima is no different. Very well equipped for the class with standard air conditioning, power everything, a cooled glovebox, tilt and telescop-ing steering wheel and keyless entry.
Once you move to mid-range EX or top-range turbo-only SX models, features such as front and rear heated seats, leather upholstery, back-up camera, a premium Infinity sound system and a navigation system are op-tions. For sporty types, SX has 18-inch wheels, bigger front brakes, sportier suspension, high-intensity-dis-charge (HID) headlights, LED taillights, rear spoiler, side sills and unique bumper design. All that, plus a five-year warranty.
Base (w/destination): $23,450; $32,000 (Hybrid)Type: Four-door sedanBase engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (200) Opt. engines (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (274); 2.4-litre DOHC I4 w/electric assist (206, hybrid) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed manual, six-speed auto.l/100 km (city/highway): 8.7/5.7 (2.4, MT)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-cur-tain airbags; anti-lock brakes; brake assist; hill assist control; traction control; stability control Weight: 1,450 kg
Kia Soul
Rio raises the bar for small-car value, features
and style. Direct fuel injec-tion and six-speed automat-ics are not normally associat-ed with entry-level transpor-tation, but here they both are in a nearly perfectly styled small car.
The pleasing sheetmetal is highlighted by the fact that the Rio sedan and Rio 5-Door hatchback have dif-ferent front ends. Kia didn’t just put a hatchback on the tail of the Rio. That attention to detail extends to the dash-board layout that’s clearly presented and far richer looking than in past Rios. The air conditioning, rear-window heat and ventilation toggle switches are a nice touch. The standard 1.6-litre four-cylinder produces 138
horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque — nice in a 1,150-kilogram vehicle. All Rios have a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic. To save fu-el, automatic-equipped cars can be ordered with what Kia calls Idle Stop and Go (ISG). This feature shuts off the en-gine when the Rio stops, then instantly fires it up once the brake pedal is released. ISG is part of an Eco Dynam-ics Package that includes a
special alternator that disen-gages under high-engine load (such as when heading up hill) for reduced power loss and improved fuel per-formance. Kia claims fuel consumption is reduced by three per cent with ISG. That’s not much, but every little bit helps. The base LX with the manual gearbox is somewhat light in the con-tent department, while the mid-range LX+ includes air conditioning and other good-
ies. The EX adds 16-inch al-loy wheels, power sunroof and a rearview camera, while the top-end SX UVO adds a Steptronic automatic transmission, 17-inch wheels (15s are standard), leather, rain-sensing wipers and more.
Base (w/destination): $15,350 (sedan), $15,750 (hatchback)Type: Four-door sedan/hatchbackEngine (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4 (138)Layout: Front-engine, FWDTransmission: Six-speed manual; six-speed automaticl/100 km (city/highway): 6.6/4.9 (MT)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; ABS; traction con-trol; stability controlWeight: 2,430 kg

The Daily News, Kamloops SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2012S18
Mazda’s compact sedan and hatchback wagon carry over with some minor trim
and content adjustments. The thrifty 155-horsepower 2.0-litre SkyAc-
tiv engine enters its sophomore year and is recommended for more for its ability to ig-nore gas pumps than its sheer performance; both 148-horsepower and 167-horsepower four-cylinder engines return, as does the 263-horse Mazdaspeed3.
Mazda has seen the future and its name is SkyActiv.
Available for the first time for the 2012 model year, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder uses di-rect-gasoline-injection technology to boost both power and efficiency.
Compared to the old 2.0-litre (which carries over in some models) the Skyactiv has 155 horsepower (versus 148) and 148 pound-feet of torque (versus 135).
It also wins in fuel economy, netting 7.1 city and 4.9 highway with the available six-speed automatic transmission, or 7.7/5.0 with the six-speed manual.
However, SkyActiv is much more than just a powertrain upgrade as the philosophy ex-tends to lowering weight, improving chassis stiffness and steering response.
The base sedans and hatchbacks (called the Sport), however, run with the same non- Skyactiv 148-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylin-der engine that’s connected to the five-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic.
Optional is a 167-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder that’s derived from the larger Maz-da6 sedan.
Here, your transmission picks consist of a slick-shifting six-speed manual gearbox or an
optional five-speed automatic. The Mazdaspeed3 hatch is also back sport-
ing its 263-horsepower 2.3-litre turbocharged engine.
Here, drivers are treated to sportier looks, wider front fenders, hood scoop, bigger wheels and tighter seats.
The price-leader GX is somewhat content starved, but does include power windows and locks, tilt/telescopic steering column and a four-speaker stereo with steering-wheel-mounted audio controls.
The GS includes a few more goodies, but you have to move up to the GT or the very well tricked-out Mazdaspeed3 for a reason-ably full complement of standard equipment. Skyactiv only comes in GS, while the GT gets the 2.5.
Base price (incl. destination): $17,500; $18,500 (Sport); $31,700 (Mazdaspeed3)Type: Four-door, front-wheel-drive compact sedan and wagon.Base Engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (148)Optional engines (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (155); 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (167); 2.3-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (263)Layout: Front engine, front-wheel-driveTransmissions: Five-speed manual (2.0); six-speed manual (std. on SkyActiv, 2.5, Mazdaspeed3); five-speed AT (opt.)l/100 km (city/highway): 8.1/5.9 (MT); 7.7/5.0 (Skyactiv MT)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags (opt.); anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability controlWeight: 1,300 kg
SkyActiv system sets Mazda CX-5 apartMazda’s all-new crossover takes
its fun-to-drive and fuel-sip-ping roles seriously.
A 155-horsepower four-cylinder is part of Mazda’s SkyActiv brand that will eventually be employed on all Mazdas.
If you’re looking to cheap out on fuel while still maintaining the quality of your ride, then the brand new Mazda CX-5 could be driving right up your alley.
Replacing the longstanding Trib-ute wagon, the attractively de-signed five-passenger CX-5 also fills in for the gone-for-2013 CX-7.
The majority of the CX-5’s me-chanical bits are promoted under the Skyactiv name that made its initial appearance with the 2012 Mazda3.
More than simply a marketing slogan, SkyActiv represents a holis-tic transformation of the power-train plus various other compo-nents that help save fuel in addi-tion to making Mazdas better driv-ing machines.
From a chassis and suspension perspective, the automaker’s engi-neers have attempted to infuse the
vehicle with as much MX-5 Miata-type sporty behavior as possible, combined with a highly efficient engine and transmission. The pow-erplant consists of a high-compres-sion 2.0-litre four-cylinder that,
due to its unique design, is able to run on low-grade 87-octane fuel and is lighter by 10 per cent than Mazda’s non-Skyactiv 2.0.
Output is rated at 155 horsepow-er and 150 pound feet of torque,
down from the Tribute’s 171/171 levels. However, the smaller-dis-placement CX-5 is slightly less paunchy so it evens out a bit.
Both sets of numbers are signifi-cantly improved over the Tribute
and CX-7 and beat league-leaders Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson. Mazda hasn’t scrimped loading up even the most basic CX-5 Sport model.
For $24,900, including destina-tion charges, the base GX gets the usual air conditioning and power-operated items, along with cruise control and push-button start.
Head up the line and you’ll find the GS and GT models, the latter of which comes with dual-zone cli-mate control and leather seats.
Price (w/destination): $24,900Type: Four-door compact tall crossoverEngine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (155)Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-driveTransmissions: Six-speed manu-al; six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 7.8/5.7 (FWD, MT)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction controlWeight: 1,460 kg

Mazda 3
Mazda MX-5
Mazda’s MX-5, the world’s best-selling sports car (they might as well retire
the crown since it’s a record not likely be broken), receives a mild styling update for 2013.
A 167-horsepower four-cylinder is mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Power peaks at 158 horses when connected to an available six-speed automatic.
Open-top sports cars may come and go (remember the Pontiac Solstice or Saturn Sky of a few years back?), but the MX-5 is forever.
Or at least that’s how it seems. The current edition receives a little
tweaking around the headlights plus some interior updates for 2013 before an all-new generation, developed in conjunction with Fiat-Chrysler-owned Alfa Romeo, arrives by mid-2014.
Once marketed in North America as the Miata and now with its alphanumeric MX-5 prefix tacked on, the roadster is at its best when negotiating snaky two-lane roads.
The 167-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylin-der powerplant is a gem, and enthusiasts will enjoy reaching its lofty limits because they are the buyers who most likely will opt for either the base five-speed manual trans-mission or the optional six-speed manual.
Either way, the manual transmissions hold the edge in the performance depart-ment over the extra-cost six-speed auto-matic.
That transmission, operated with shift
pad-dles,
slightly reduces the maximum revs to
6,700 and lowers the en-gine’s power rating to 158.
Either way, that doesn’t sound like a lot of power for a sporty car, and it really isn’t.
However, the Miata doesn’t weigh a lot, so it feels like more.
Two roofs are available: a manually oper-ated soft top secured by a central latch that can be opened or closed from inside the cockpit; and the optional Power Retract-able Hard Top (PRHT) that raises or lowers in about 12 seconds and stows in the same spot as the soft version without compromis-ing trunk space.
Also carried over are the MX-5’s trim lev-els. Base GX models remain fairly basic, al-though uplevel versions feature air condi-tioning. Along with the six-speed gearbox, the GS adds a few more goodies plus 17-inch wheels.
The GT gets the retractable hardtop plus extra-bright xenon headlights, climate con-trol and a premium Bose sound system.
Price (incl. destination): $30,950Type: Two-door, rear-wheel-drive roadsterEngine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (167, MT; 158, AT)Layout: Front engine, rear-wheel-driveTransmissions: Five-speed manual; six-speed manual (opt.); six-speed automatic (opt.)l/100 km (city/hwy.): 9.2/7.1 (base MT)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact air-bags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability controlWeight: 1,120 kg

SUN COUNTRY TOYOTA SCIONwww.suncountrytoyota.ca 1355 Cariboo Place, Kamloops

The Daily News, KamloopsSATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2012 S23
Even though it has been on the market for eight years, the FJ Cruiser still turns
heads. Most people still can’t seem to fath-om how a conservative brand like Toyota allowed this retro-influenced off-roader to be sold next to Corollas and Camrys in the first place.
The FJ’s styling harkens back to the still-coveted FJ Land Cruisers of the 1960s and ’70s, although the contemporary version is much more than a mere blast from the past. Underneath its skin, the FJ is as mod-ern and up-to-date as Toyota can build it.
The rear access doors open clamshell-style for easier passenger and cargo load-ing/unloading and the flexible fender trim is dent and ding resistant.
And three wiper arms are used to keep the curved windshield clean.
On the inside, rubber mats replace the usual carpeting for a quick hose-out and the seat fabric is water-repellent.
The FJ comes with a 4.0-litre V6 rated at 260 horsepower.
A six-speed manual transmission is stan-dard on four-wheel-drive models, while a
five-speed automatic is optional. Your choice of four-wheel-drive system
also depends on the transmission. The six-speed gearbox works with a full-
time transfer case that directs 60 per cent
of the power to the rear wheels under nor-mal conditions or an equal basis when locked up.
With the automatic, a part-time transfer case is employed.
The standard-equipment list includes air conditioning, eight-way adjustable driver’s seat, tilt steering wheel, six-speaker audio system, side-curtain airbags for occupants in both rows of seats (with a rollover sen-sor) and power windows and door locks.
Optional are upgrade groupings that add such items as remote keyless entry, rear parking assist, all-new 17-inch alloy wheels, running boards, a stout roof rack and a premium sound system with a rear-mounted sub-woofer powered by its own amplifier.
Price (w/destination): $34,900Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicleEngine (hp): 4.0-litre DOHC V6 (260)Layout: Front-engine, four-wheel-driveTransmissions: Five-speed automatic; six-speed manuall/100 km (city/highway): 12.4/9.5 (MT)Safety: Front airbags; side-curtain airbags with rollover sensor; anti-lock brakes; stabili-ty control; traction controlWeight (kg): 1,970
There are few competitors left in the sub-full-size pickup class and Toyota’s Tacoma gets even more
luxurious this year with the new Limited package. But it keeps its tried-and-true 2.7-litre four-cylinder
and its truck-specific 4.0-litre V6.Talk about lonely. The Tacoma is very nearly the last
pickup that doesn’t tower over every other vehicle on the road.
Despite its relative age, Toyota unleashed a trickle of updates for 2012, including a very subtle reshaped grille and headlights, and new exterior mirrors.
Under the long hood rests the base 159-horsepower four-cylinder, or if towing/hauling is more of a concern, Tacoma offers a 236-horsepower 4.0-litre V6.
Outfitted with six standard airbags and traction and stability control to help keep the driver on track when the road surface becomes disagreeable, the Tacoma comes in the Access-Cab and four-door Double-Cab models and your choice of rear-or four-wheel drive.
The box (available in two lengths) floor and walls in all cases is made of composite plastic that obviously won’t dent or rust. Up-level models also get hose-out heavy-duty all-weather flooring.
The radio also gets upgraded with a larger eight-cen-timetre screen that doubles as the backup camera, and every Tacoma comes with Toyota’s Bluetooth system.
Adding a little class to the mix is a new Limited Pack-age, which includes plenty of chrome inside and out, plus heated front sport seats, leather-trimmed steering wheel and more. Tacoma TRD editions add more per-formance optons such as Bilstein shocks and active traction control.
Base price (incl. destination): $23,700Type: Four-door mid-sized pickupBase Engine (hp): 2.7-litre DOHC I4 (159)Optional engine (hp): 4.0-litre DOHC V6 (236)Layout: Front-engine, rear-/four-wheel driveTransmission: Five-speed manual; four-speed auto-matic (opt. on I4); six-speed manual (std. on V6); five-speed automatic (opt. on V6)l/100 km (city/highway): 10,0/7.7 (2.7, MT, 4x2)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-cur-tain airbags; ABS; traction control; stability controlWeight: 1,610
Modern Toyota FJ Cruiser keeps retro style
The world’s most popular gaso-line-electric hybrid brand has
become a lineup unto itself and Toyota Prius c is its smallest and least-expensive member.
Although diminutive in stature — almost 50 centimetres shorter than the standard Prius hatchback — Prius c comes up big in mini-mizing fuel consumption, register-ing 3.5 l/100 km city and 4.0 high-way. By comparison, a regular Pri-us rates 3.7/4.0. Combined city/highway number for both is 3.7 litres per 100 km. A major part of the Prius c’s desirability is its at-tractive styling and practical hatchback shape. The front end has traces of Toyota’s Yaris, but overall, the c is easy on the eyes.
And other than a steeply sloping roofline that might discourage tall types from accessing the rear por-tals, there’s a generous amount of usable storage space with the split-folding back seat in the up or folded-flat position. The rest of the interior is pleasing and straight-forward, other than what must be the most unusual dash/control panel layouts ever designed.
The upper-level speedometer, fuel gauge and optional electric power display are askew of the steering wheel, while the infotain-ment screen and ventilation set-tings are enveloped by oddly formed plastic trim pieces.
Prius c’s powertrain consists of a 73-horsepower 1.5-litre four-cylin-der engine coupled to a continu-ously variable transmission and assisted by a 60-horsepower (45-kilowatt) electric motor.
The net output is a scant 99
horsepower, compared to 134 horses for the larger Prius hatch and wagon. The 144-volt battery pack and fuel tank are positioned beneath the rear seat to maximize interior space and lower the c’s centre of gravity for better weight distribution and road holding.
Additionally, the c’s driver can switch between Normal, Eco and EV operation. The Eco mode takes some of the starch out of the stan-dard throttle and climate control settings to save energy. EV mode allows the car to run on solely electric power at less than 50 km/h, making it ideal for typical work commutes and other going-nowhere-fast situations. Prius c comes in one well-equipped model with optional Technology and Pre-mium packages. The lowest-nu-merical model includes climate control, cruise, tilt-telescopic steering wheel plus the usual pow-er-operated features. You can also add heated front seats, keyless start, a premium sound and navi-gation system and a moonroof.
Price (w. destination): $22,250Type: Four-door compact hatch-backEngine (hp): 1.5-litre DOHC I4 combined with 45-kilowatt electric motor (99)Layout: Front engine, FWDTransmission: Continuously variablel/100 km (city/highway): 3.5/4.0Safety: Front airbags; front-/rear side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; driver ’s knee airbag; ABS; traction and stability controlWeight: 1,130 kg

Scion tCThe tC now has to share the sporty-car limelight
with the new FR-S Coupe, which is now Sci-on’s most athletic model.
So the tC is no longer the fanciest or flashiest Scion in town, but it remains appealing for other reasons, not the least of which is an easy-on-the-wallet price tag.
The styling is derived from a recent run of Scion concept vehicles, but still leaves buyers with plen-ty of freedom to make dealer-supplied (and war-ranted) modifications such as different wheels, spoilers and even a wide-body kit.
Under the hood is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder en-gine that generates 180 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque. Six-speed transmissions, ei-ther manual or optional automatics, handle the shifting duties.
Scion’s philosophy of offering well-equipped cars in one trim level that can then be customized by their owners still rings true.
That means the standard-equipment list in-cludes air conditioning, cruise control, 18-inch al-loy wheels, anti-lock brakes, a power dual-pane moonroof, high-output Pioneer sound system and power windows, locks and mirrors.
The tC also comes with the requisite six airbags plus a driver’s knee airbag.
With the rear seat (which reclines as much as 45 degrees) and the front passenger seat folded flat, the hatchback-accessible stowage swallows objects up to 2.4-metres in length.

The Daily News, KamloopsSATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2012 S25
The thoroughly altered 2013 MKZ stands out with its noth-
ing-quite-like-it appearance. The signature waterfall grille (vertical bars) has been replaced by a se-ries of horizontal bars.
But for real design drama, you can’t beat the sweep of the roof-line that flows well past the rear-most roof pillar, almost to the trailing edge of the body.
The massive windshield and rear window glass, including the optional retractable panoramic sunroof, makes passenger claus-trophobia doubtful.
The ultra-sophisticated leather-covered and wood-trimmed inte-rior includes a floor console ex-tending seamlessly the length of the cabin.
In back, optional inflatable seat-belts for outboard riders cushion their heads and necks in the event of frontal crash.
In the suspension department, continuously adjustable shock damping, power-assisted electric
steering, variable transmission-shift-mapping plus traction and stability control all combine to form Lincoln Drive Control.
The result, says Lincoln, is im-proved ride and handling in Nor-mal, Sport, or Comfort modes, as selected by the driver.
A push-button gear selector next to the gauges replaces the traditional floor shifter.
Powerplant choices include a 240-horsepower 2.0-litre four- cylinder EcoBoost (turbocharged) four cylinder.
Optional is a 300-horsepower 3.7-litre V6.
For maximum fuel savings, the MKZ returns with a gasoline-elec-tric Hybrid with a 141-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder combined with an electric motor for a com-bined 188 horsepower.
The turbo and V6 come with six-speed transmissions that send torque to the front, or both sets of wheels if all-wheel-drive is added.
The front-wheel-drive-only Hy-
brid uses a continuously variable transmission.
The MKZ can be had with nu-merous crash-mitigating safety systems that prevent your partici-pation in rear-end mishaps and keep you in your intended lane.
Base (incl. destination): $39,000 (est.)Type: Four-door, front- /all-wheel-drive sedanBase Engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (240)Opt. engine (hp): 3.7-litre DOHC V6, (300); 2.0-litre DOHC I4 with a 47-horsepower electric motor (200 combined, hybrid)Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed auto-matic; continuously variable (Hybrid)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain air-bags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control
With the entry MKZ receiving a full redesign, it makes sense
that the rest of Lincoln’s carry-over products at least partly follow the same theme. That’s why the MKS gets the new flying-bird-shaped front grille and corresponding fas-cia, along with new high-intensity-discharge headlights.
The back of the car gets a new deck lid, bumper and brighter LED taillights. All models also get rede-signed 19- or optional 20-inch wheels. The interior appointments hammer home the luxury theme but in a subtle way that also departs from Lincoln tradition.
The new dashboard incorpo-rates a bigger instrument panel with screens integrating the re-vised MyLincoln Touch system and Lincoln-Sync, a voice-acti-vated system for controlling en-tertainment and communications devices.
The big Lincoln is powered by a revised and more efficient 304-horsepower (up from 270)
3.7-litre V6 mated to a six-speed au-tomatic transmission with manual shift controls. Any perceived defi-ciency can be rectified by the op-tional 365-horsepower twin-turbo-
charged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6. The MKS can be ordered with
front- or all-wheel-drive, but the lat-ter is what you get when you specify the turbo engine.
For 2013, all MKS models get Lin-coln Drive Control, a system that can alter the suspension settings, steering effort, shift feel and more from the cabin, and it also uses con-
tinuously controlled damping to adjust the suspension 20
times per second for a smoother and more controlled ride. Lin-coln endows the MKS with a wealth of comfort, conve-nience and techno-focused items,
keeping the options list to a minimum.
On the menu is radar-based
adaptive cruise con-trol that
maintains a safe distance from
the car ahead, and a heat-sensing LED (light-emitting diode) keypad that unlocks the vehicle from the outside, while voice-activated satel-
lite navigation is part of the optional surround-sound audio system.
Lincoln offers blind-spot warning and cross-traffic alert, which warns drivers when a car is approaching while they’re backing out of a park-ing space.
These features are in addition to climate control, rain-sensing wind-shield wipers, rearview camera, front and rear proximity sensors, heated front and rear leather seats with power adjustment and a dual-panel moonroof.

Lincoln MKS raises the luxury bar again
A few years ago, Lincoln en-larged the grille on the MKX
and now, three other Lincolns in showrooms feature similar styling.
The company’s premium-division engineers worked hard to reduce the noise invading the cabin by us-ing improved acoustic materials, a sound-absorbing headliner, thicker windshield glass and “baked-on” foam baffles in the fenders and door pillars.
On-road capability was upgraded with bigger brakes, retuned shock absorbers and stabilizer bars that are designed to produce flatter cor-nering. Standard equipment in-cludes trailer sway control and Hill Start Assist, which prevents the ve-hicle from rolling backward on a steep grade.
A 305-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 is the sole engine while a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle controls handles the shifting chores.
All-wheel-drive is optional. Inside, most of the MKX’s tradi-
tional switchgear — even some gauges from the dashboard and control panel — have moved to the MyLincoln Touch technology screen.
This standard system has two programmable 4.2-inch (diagonal)
touch-screens on either side of the speedometer, and an eight-inch unit in the centre stack.
A game-controller-style “smart” button on the steering wheel oper-ates the climate, communications, navigation, infotainment and other vehicle functions in a somewhat in-tuitively designed fashion.
To help out, MyLincoln has colour-coded touch-sensitive con-trols of a type used in cell phones and TV remotes, which should help give it a familiar feel. There are also touch-based slider-type controls for the audio volume and ventilation fan speed.

A slightly larger second-genera-
tion full-size off-roader with space for seven passengers and their gear; of course, being a Mer-cedes-Benz, you know there’s more safety wizardry as well. The 3.0-litre turbo-diesel is the thriftiest in a trio of models and their respective powerplants.
For premium-class conveyances, few mea-sure up to Mercedes-Benz and nowhere is this more apparent than the automaker’s range of sport utility vehicles, including the GL. The second-generation seven-passenger tall wagon is known for its spacious interior, which is now even roomier following the ar-rival of an all-new edition that’s a bit longer and wider than before and taller to boot.
Visually, the GL is much more striking with its enlarged grille and shapely side panels and looks a lot less like its more modest M-class stable mate.
Again this year, the base model (GL350 BlueTec) is a turbo-diesel that makes 240 horsepower (a gain of 30) and, more impor-tantly 455 pound-feet of torque (previously 400 pound-feet). Gasoline engine choices, every one twin-turbocharged, start with the GL450’s 362-horsepower 4.6-litre V8, fol-lowed by the GL550 that uses a 429-horse-power 5.5-litre V8.
All editions arrive with seven-speed auto-matic transmissions plus M-B’s impressive 4MATIC all-wheel-drive that specializes in providing secure all-conditions traction. Should you choose to risk your significant cash outlay by taking your Mercedes off the pavement, you can opt for an On/Off-Road
package that in-cludes a two-speed transfer case with a low range, locking dif-ferentials and skid plates to protect the underbelly.
It also includes a modified air sus-pension that rais-es maximum
ground clearance by your choice of three, 6.1 and 8.9 centime-tres above the standard 21.6 centimetres of ground clearance. This is accomplished with the standard adjustable AIRMATIC system. Among the many comforts the GL offers a power-folding third-row seat; power opera-tion for the second row is optional.
Mercedes obviously includes most if not all of its best safety hardware and convenience features in the GL; what you don’t see on the content list probably hasn’t been invented.
Base price (incl. destination): $75,700 (GL350 BlueTEC)Type: Four-door sport-utilityBase Engine (hp): 3.0-litre DOHC V6, tur-bo-diesel (240)Optional engines (hp): 4.6-litre DOHC V8 (362); 5.5-litre DOHC V8 (429/550, AMG) Layout: Front-engine, FWD Transmission: Seven-speed automaticl/100 km (city/highway): 11.9/8.6 (GL350 BlueTEC)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; head-curtain airbags with rollover sensor; ABS; stability control; traction controlWeight: 2,465 kg (GL 450)
This highly practical Mer-cedes happens to be the
smallest and is back for 2013 after a one-year absence with plenty of new style and features, all at a significantly lower base price.
The standard turbo-charged four-cylinder en-gine makes 208 horsepower, while the seven-speed auto-matic transmission directs it to the front wheels.
Canadians were the first North Americans to sample the B-Class that first arrived for the 2006 model year. However, Mercedes-Benz gave the compact wagon the year off to retool for the sec-ond-generation wagon for 2013. Although the car closely resembles the previ-ous B-Class, there are some obvious sheet-metal changes that give it more flair.
This year’s B is also a bit longer and wider than before and the distance between the front and rear wheels has been slightly elongated.
The interior has a rich look about it that’s typical for most Mercedes-Benz prod-ucts, but not necessarily for vehicles in the low-$30,000 price bracket.
Included as standard are leather upholstery, climate control, electronic parking brake, ambient mood light-ing and 17-inch run-flat tires that do away with the spare
tire. The option list runs the gamut including upgraded interior furnishings, audio/communications systems and other luxuries.
For 2013 the standard 2.0-litre DOHC turbocharged engine produces 208 horse-power and 258 pound-feet of torque and replaces the pre-vious 2.0-liter 134-horse-powerf four-cylinder and the optional turbo version rated at 193 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque.
The new turbo is matched with a seven-speed automat-ic transmission that takes over from the previous five-speed manual and CVT units.
The new powertrain is much thriftier as well, but like all M-B products, it pre-fers to drink from high-oc-tane fuel pumps.
A stop-start function helps lower fuel consumption by shutting the engine off when
stopped in traffic, starting it when the gas pedal is de-pressed.
Given that the new B-Class sells at the same price point as the old non-turbo model, the wealth of added perfor-mance and comfort items makes it one of the best bar-gains around.

Buick Verano and Regal are upping the ante
B-Class
One drive in the Euro-fla-voured Regal is enough
to convince most that this isn’t the traditional kind of Buick. In fact, Regal’s clean, yet expressive look is a far cry from just about any other Buick ever built.
This year, Buick is stream-lining the Regal’s offerings to cut down on confusion. The Regal borrows the 182-horsepower 2.4-litre eAssist gasoline-electric hy-brid system from the La-Crosse.
It packages a 15-kilowatt electric motor and small lith-ium-ion battery that helps bring fuel economy up by a claimed 25 percent. The op-tional 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that packs 220 horsepower is joined by a 270-horse version in the high-performance GS model.
All three engines transmit their power to the front wheels; the first two by means of six-speed automat-ic transmissions, while the GS is only available with a six-speed manual (which is also optional with the lesser turbo motor).
The upscale European in-fluence can be clearly seen inside with plenty of stitched leather and wood trim that’s offset by a tasteful amount of satin nickel brightwork on the door panels, steering
wheel and centre console. Regals are sold very well equipped, which means plenty of power features and luxurious content are the standard package, in keep-ing with the car’s entry-luxu-ry status.
All new Regals use Buick’s touch-screen IntelliLink, in-cluding those with optional navigation. A console-mounted control knob that operates the optional premi-um audio, navigation and Bluetooth-enabled phone systems is available, as is the Interactive Drive Control System offered in turbo-equipped versions. This fea-ture electronically adjusts the suspension travel and transmission shift points ac-cording to three settings: Normal for all-around use; Tour for maximum passen-ger comfort; and Sport mode for maximum road holding.
The system also adapts to individual driving styles by altering the suspension, steering effort and throttle response.
Price (w/destination): $38,500Type: Four-door sedanBase Engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 with integrated 15kW electric motor (182)Optional engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (220 Turbo, 270 GS)Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-driveTransmission: Six-speed automatic; six-speed manu-al (available with 2.0)l/100 km (city/highway): 8.3/5.4 (2.4)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control.Weight: 1,600 kg
In its sopho-more season,
the Verano is expanding its excellent offer-ings to include a performance-minded turbo model that’ll nip at the heels of the larger and more ex-pensive Regal GS.
The Verano Turbo uses the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder as the GS, and despite putting out 10 fewer horses (250 ver-sus 260 in Regal GS), is much quicker to 100 km/h from a standing start.
It comes with all the toys that are optional on lesser models, including heated leather seats and steering wheel, a nine-speaker Bose-brand audio system with a new touch screen and costs $32,000 compared with the larger Regal at $43,000.
Quite the bargain. Regular Verano models start at a much lower $24,000 and although base models come with leatherette (vinyl) and cloth seats, premium versions feature plenty of wood trim and overstuffed leather-covered seat cushions.
For any compact car, this is ground-break-ing. The Verano’s designers say they’ve gone out of their way to make the cabin a place of exemplary peace and quiet.
They’ve added five layers of acoustic mate-rial within the headliner, sound-absorbing foam and other insulating materials stuffed into every possible nook and cranny, all door openings triple sealed and the use of thicker windshield and side glass for additional noise reduction.
Other sound-defeating mea-sures include specially de-signed tires and alloy wheels plus “quiet-tuned” intake and exhaust sys-tems for the standard 180-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine
that’s mated to a six-speed automatic trans-mission (there’s an optional six-speed manu-al for the Turbo). Other standard gear in-cludes dual-zone climate control, a rear-view camera, 10 standard airbags and GM’s On-Star concierge and help line that can also ac-tivate various functions (open doors, check fuel level, etc.) from your smart phone.
Also optional is a heated steering wheel, push-button start, electronic parking brake, premium Bose audio package and 18-inch al-loy wheels (17-inchers are standard).
New safety gear for 2013 includes optional cross-traffic alert and side blind-spot warning systems in most packages.

The Daily News, Kamloops SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2012S30
The junior-sized RDX has been around since the
2007 model year and is a ri-val to the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Cadillac SRX, Mer-cedes-Benz GLK and other premium-priced, five-pas-senger wagon competitors.
The significant physical adjustments for 2013 are simply the overture to the sweet sounds of a 3.5-litre V6 that replaces the turbo-charged 2.3-litre four-cylin-der. The V6 puts out 273 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque, compared to 240 horses and 260 pound-feet of torque for the 2.3.
More importantly, fuel consumption much lower. A six-speed automatic trans-mission — one more gear than used with the turbo four — helps improve econ-omy but so do other fuel-conserving innovations: low-viscosity engine and transmission oil, a special friction-reducing coating on
the pistons and Variable Cylinder Management that allows the engine to operate with two or three of its six cylinders shut down under light-load conditions.
Above and beyond its powertrain efficiencies, the RDX features improved aerodynamics, fuel-saving electric power steering and fuel pump, and low rolling-resistance tires.
Another change is the loss of Acura’s very effective Su-per Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). However,
the replacement system, called AWD with Intelligent Control, appears to have its own merits, sending 25 per cent of the available torque to the rear wheels when ac-celerating from a stop, up to 100 per cent to the front wheels at a steady speed and splitting the torque 50:50 when heading up a 15 per cent (or greater) slope.
It can’t send extra torque to the outside turning wheels like the SH-AWD could, but that’s at least par-
tially offset by electronic power-steering and traction-control systems that reduce front- or rear-end plowing while turning (understeer and oversteer).
RDX follows Acura’s for-mula of plenty of luxury content, including a power moonroof, leather-covered interior, power-adjustable front seats and a 360-watt audio system.
Base price (incl. destina-tion): RDX $42,935Type: Four-door compact tall wagonEngine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (273)Layout: Front-engine, all-wheel-driveTransmission: Six-speed automaticl/100 km (city/highway): 10.7/7.3Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability con-trolWeight: 1,750 kg
Acura’s new compact ILX is a far cry from the automaker’s earlier entry-level efforts, such as the fun-loving Integra from the 1980s and ’90s, or the flashier RSX.
Those models appealed to a more exuber-ant audience, including the so-called “tuner” crowd, while Acura’s newest pocket sedan is for a growing segment of non-enthusiasts, primarily Generation Y types in their mid-20s to mid-30s seeking affordable luxury with a side order of social responsibility.
Although loosely based on the Civic plat-form, the ILX has little in common with the Honda. From the front and side, the car’s high style is much evidence. However, the short, rounded rear deck looks out of place with the rest of the design and results in a trunk of only modest proportions.
At least the folding the back seat can ex-tend the available stowage space. On the oth-er hand, the interior has a first-class quality to it, especially the well designed dashboard, control panel and useful multi-information display that among other data provides aver-age speed, fuel consumption and oil life info. Base iterations arrive with a 150-horsepower,
2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that operates through a five-speed automatic transmission. For performance-minded millennials, there’s the optional 201-horsepower, 2.4-litre four-cylinder that uses a six-speed manual gear-box (both purloined from the Honda Civic Si) to keep the front wheels turning. At the so-
cially conscious end of the lineup, the Hybrid combines its 1.5-litre four-cylinder with an electric motor to generate 111 net horsepow-er. All models include a power moonroof, keyless push-button start, rear-view camera and an audio system with an interface for subscription-based Internet music. The avail-
able Premium Package includes a power-ad-justable driver’s seat, leather covered seats (heated in front) and a premium audio sys-tem, while the Technology package adds a 365-watt ELS stereo (with 15-gigabytes of music storage capacity) and a voice-con-trolled navigation system. Some extras, no-tably the leather interior, high-intensity xe-non headlights and 17-inch wheels (16-inch rims are standard) are included on the 2.4.

New ILX, RDX add to Acura lineup
The MDX proves that great style never really goes out of style and, along with some techno wizardry,
helps keep this top-performing wagon in step with the pack. It carries over basically unchanged for the 2013 model year, four years into its last 2010 refresh that in-cluded some visual tweaking and massaging of the me-chanical component plus a nose job.
Beneath the surface, the MDX features a rigid plat-form and a firm suspension and a power-steering rack especially tuned for road feel. For the 2013 model year, the MDX continues with a 300-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with pad-dle-shift controls. Super Handling All Wheel Drive can shift the power front to back as well as a side-to-side and even overdrive the outside rear wheel in a turn to promote stability.
The SH-AWD ranks right up there with Audi’s Quat-tro system for operational competency. A virtual trea-sure trove of standard content makes the MDX — and the entire Acura line for that matter — the envy of its competitors. Highlights include tri-zone climate control (driver, passenger and rear passengers), power moon-roof, leather seats (heated and power adjustable in front), reclining second-row seat and a remote-con-trolled power liftgate.
A 253-watt, eight-speaker audio system is also stan-dard, but can be upgraded to a 410-watt 10-speaker set-up that’s in the Technology Package with perforated leather seats, rearview camera and voice-recognition navigation. Also available are auto-leveling headlights, adaptive cruise control that maintains a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, active damping that continu-ously adjusts the shocks to road conditions and a blind-spot alert that warns of vehicles overtaking the MDX.

Acura ILX
Until the next-generation RL sedan heads our way
for the 2014 model year, the spirited TL fills in as Acura’s designated flagship sedan. For the 2012 model year, Acu-ra’s stylists took a scalpel to the car’s controversial probos-cis, along with other modifi-cations to the rest of the vehi-cle. The tamer nose likely found favour with more buy-ers and the aerodynamics were improved 5.4 per cent. In back, a new bumper with built-in reflectors was added, along with fresh taillights, trunk-lid trim and exhaust outlets. The rest of the TL’s physical presence was left un-disturbed, save for body-coloured door handles and revised standard and optional multi-spoke wheels. Further
refinements included upgrad-ed interior trim, available ventilated front seats and an optional voice recognition sound system that can store up to 3,500 songs on its hard drive. For 2013, the TL’s base 280-horsepower V6 and op-tional 305-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 remain un-touched, as does the six-speed automatic transmission that’s attached to each pow-
erplant. A six-speed manual-gearbox-equipped TL is of-fered exclusively with the 3.7, but it’s the least efficient of the group. As for the few available options, a Technolo-gy Package includes a naviga-tion system with traffic and weather updates, 440-watt sound system, premium leather-covered seats and keyless push-button start. In addition, an Advance Package
adds ventilated front seats, upgraded wheels and a Blind Spot Information system that advises the driver when an-other vehicle is closing in on the TL from either side.
