KNow your PurPoseTHE PLAN...God created us in his own image to enjoy a relationship with him and planned our life to be filled with meaning and purpose.

THE PURSUIT...Why then do things like inner peace, abundant joy, and confident hope evade most people?

THE PROBLEM...Our relationship with God has been badly broken, and we are unable to ex-perience the promises and plans of God apart from him. This separation from God is the end result of our living outside his plans, what the Bible calls sin.

THE PROMISE…But God in his great love has provided for us a way to reunite with him and live the life he planned for us from the beginning.

1Believe Jesus Christ

BECAME A MAn SO I CAn RELATE TO HIM

“It is the Good news about God’s Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who came as a human baby, born into King

David’s royal family line; and by being raised from the dead he proved to be the mighty Son of God, with

the holy nature of God himself.” Romans 1:3-4 (LB)

DIED FOR MY SInS – SO I DOn’T HAVE TO

“It is this Good news that saves you if you firmly believe it... that Christ died for our sins. He wasbur-

ied, and He was raised from the dead on the third day, as the Scriptures said.” 1 Corinthians 15:2-4 (nLT)

“For God was in Christ, restoring the world to himself, no longer counting men’s sins against them but

blotting them out. This is the wonderful message he has given us to tell others.” 2 Corinthians 5:19 (LB)

2Accept God’s Salvation

AS A FREE GIFT – BECAUSE I CAn’T EARn IT

“People are made right with God by his grace, which is a free gift. They are made right with God by being

made free from sin through Jesus Christ. God gave Jesus as a way to forgive sin through faith.”

Romans 3:24-25 (ICB)

“God saved you by his special favor when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift

from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (nLT)

Page 7: New Believer Packet

SELF is on the throne.

Interests are directed by

self, resulting in discord, and

frustration.

Christ is outside the life.

CHRIST is on the throne.

Self is yielding to Christ.

Interests are directed by

Christ, resulting in harmony

with God’s plan.

3Switch to God’s Plan

BASED On FAITH – SO I MUST REPEnT AnD BELIEVE

Jesus said, “Repent and believe the good news!” Mark 1:15 (nIV)

“The Good news shows how God makes people right with himself— that it begins and ends with faith. As

the Scripture says, ‘Those who are right with God will live by trusting in him.” Romans 1:17 (nCV)

Switching to God’s plan involves turning the controls of your life over to God (repentance) and trusting

Christ to accept and forgive you of your sins and begin to change you into who he has created you to

be.

4Establish Jesus Christ

AS MY LIFE’S DIRECTOR— SO I CAn HAVE ETERnAL LIFE

“Jesus destroyed death, and through the Good news he showed us the way to have life that cannot be

destroyed.” 2 Timothy 1:10 (nCV)

“He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these

things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal

life.” 1 John 5:12-13

God sincerely desires for you to take these four steps to begin a relationship with you. God knows

what is in your heart and wants to speak with you personally. Here is a simple prayer suggestion to

help you:

Dear God, I believe you sent your son, Jesus, to die for my sins so I can be forgiven. I’m sorry for my sins and want to live the rest of my life the way you want me to. Please put your spirit in my life to guide and help me. Amen.

If you have entrusted yourself to God through Jesus Christ, you may be sure of the following:

1. Jesus took up residence in your life

2. your sins were forgiven.

3. God adopted YOu into His eternal family

4. You now have eternal life with God

5. You are now able to experience life the way God planned for you

B a p t i s mThe Bible is very clear that the first act of obedience for a person who surrenders to Jesus is to be baptized. Baptism is an outward expression of an inward change. It’s a way for Christians to proclaim to everyone that they are followers of Jesus.

We totally understand that with this topic and big decision comes many ques-tions. Why should I get baptized? How should I get baptized? What is the mean-ing of baptism? Who should get baptized? We want to answer these questions the best that we can as you go forward in this step of obedience.

To follow the example set by Christ.

“At that time Jesus came from naza-

reth and was baptized by John in the

river.” (Mark 1:9)

W h y S h o u l d I B e B a p t I z e d ?

What IS the MeanIngIT ILLUSTRATES CHRIST’S DEATH, BURIAL, AND RESURRECTION.“CHRIST DIED fOR OUR SINS... HE WAS BURIED...AND HE ROSE AGAIN.” (1 CORINTHIANS 15:3-4)“fOR WHEN yOU WERE BAPTIzED, yOU WERE BURIED WITH CHRIST, AND IN BAPTISM yOU WERE ALSO RAISED WITH CHRIST.” (COLOS-SIANS 2:12)

IT ILLUSTRATES My NEW LIfE AS A CHRISTIAN.“WHEN SOMEONE BECOMES A CHRISTIAN HE BECOMES A BRAND NEW PERSON INSIDE. THE OLD LIfE HAS PASSED AWAy AND A NEW LIfE HAS BEGUN!” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:17)

Why Be Bapt i zed By Immers i on?Because Jesus was baptized that way. “As soon as

Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water.”

(Matthew 3:16)

Every baptism in the Bible was by immersion. (for ex-

ample) “ then both Philip and the man went down into

the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up

out of the water...” (Acts 8:38-39)

The word “baptize” means “to dip under water.”

It best symbolized a burial and resurrection.

(see Romans 6:1-11)

The founders of the major denominations agree: Martin

Luther (founder of the Lutheran denomination):

“I would have those who are to be baptized to be

entirely immersed, as the word imports and the mys-

tery signifies.”

John Calvin (founder of the Presbyterian denomina-

tion): “The word ‘baptize’ signifies to immerse. It is

certain that immersion was the practice of the an-

cient church.”

John Wesley (founder of Methodist and Wesleyan

denomination): “‘Buried with Him’ alludes to baptizing

by immersion according to the custom of the first

church.”

Because Christ commanded it.

“Jesus said, ‘Go then, to all people ev-

erywhere and make them my disciple,

baptize them in the name of the

W h o s h o u l d b e b a p t i z e d ?Every person who believes in Christ. A believer is someone who has realized that their sin separated them from God. They have given up all efforts to reach God through good works or religious activity. They have concluded that Jesus Christ’s death on the cross for their sins in the only thing that can bridge the gap between them and God. A believer is someone who has decided to trust Christ alone for his/her salvation. If you have come to that point in your spiritual journey, then you are ready to be baptized (Acts 2:41, 8:2-13).

If you would like more informa-tion, or to have someone walk you through this in more detail, you can sign-up for our PfB Church “Starting Point” Class.

We have baptisms every other month at fLOOD. Let us know if you want to get baptized. We are so excited for you as you walk through this process. And please know that we are here to help you each step of the way.

If you still have questions about baptism, please contact us at fLOOD and we will help you however we can.

S p i r i t u a l M a t u r i t ySpiritual growth is not so much about “doing” as it is about “becoming” — becoming more like

Christ. It’s a life-long adventure that takes patience, commitment, and intentional focus. It’s not what we do along the way that is most important. What really matters is who we are becoming

in the process. Ultimately, the Christian life is about building an intimate relationship with Jesus as the Holy Spirit changes us from the inside out, and loving others the way Jesus loves us.

We are excited to partner with you by providing a program called, “THRIvE.” The program teaches you how to live the Christian life as a follower of Jesus. It is an eight-week, one-on-one relationship experience where you can ask questions, learn the basics of Christianity, and begin

to live a life that THRIvES as a follower of Jesus.

If you would like more information, contact Calli at the church and she will help get you con-nected to THRIvE ([email protected]; 909-629-5277 x3044).

“As the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him and reflect his glory even more” (2 Corinthians 3:18b, NLT).

Sharing The Love of GodYou were made for a mission. God is at work in the world, and he

wants you to join him. God wants you to share His love where you

are. As a student, mother, father, teacher, salesman, manager, or

whatever you do, God wants you to reach out to the people in your

life and introduce them to him. That might mean inviting a friend to

church or showing love to those in need around you.

God invites you to participate in the greatest, largest, most diverse,

and most significant cause in history — his kingdom. The opportunities

for normal, everyday Christians to become involved in short-term

international missions are now limitless. Every corner of the world

is available to you. You were saved to serve and made to go out and

spread the Good news.

Our missions team and community service team within FLOOD are here

to help you discover great ways that you can share your faith both

locally and globally.

“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to

give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 Peter 3:15).

You were madefor a mission

Serving Others in Jesus’ NameWhen we become a Christian, God gives us salvation and the hope of eternity in heaven. He also gives us purpose and significance in our lives. He has given each of us the opportunity to serve others and make a real difference in our com-munity. When you serve others in Jesus’ name, you’re ministering. God didn’t design ministry for just a few people. Here at PfB and within fLOOD, we believe that every person is an owner. We do not have members within fLOOD; we have owners. Many times, the word “member” brings about a sense of entitlement. OWNERSHIP? This means that each person plays a part and has a responsibility to fulfill.

To find a place to serve and to get involved in the mission that Christ has called you to be a part of, contact Calli at the church and she will help get you connected with fLOOD Lead Team members (calli@floodnow; 909-629-5277 x3044).

As God continues to grow the ministry of fLOOD, we want to be intentional about making sure that fLOOD remains a healthy community. Community groups are vital for this to happen.

This is a small group for college-aged people set up to build true and lasting relationships with one another. The whole pur-pose of this morning is to meet with Jesus in a smaller setting, getting to know others as we look at God’s word, spending time in prayer together, and experiencing true community.

FLOOD SUNDAYS | SUNDAyS | 5:00PM | fELLOWSHIP HALL @ PURPOSE CHURCH

This small group ministry is set up specifically for young adults to get together in small groups, to encourage each other in their journeys with Christ, to walk and talk through the mes-sages preached at fLOOD on Thursdays, and to make new life-long “family members.” Do not miss this night. It is set up so that you have a place to connect with other young adults striving to live lives set apart for Jesus.

Page 13: New Believer Packet

This is a small group taught by Pastor Lisa Toney that meets every Sunday morning. It is for young adults in their twenties and thirties, single and/or married. This is a great place for you to plug in with other young adults on a Sunday morning. Where “Together” is for college-aged young adults, this small group is for post-college young adults who are looking for a com-munity of other post-college young adults.

How to have meaningful time with god by PASTOR RICK WARREn

(Condensed from his book, Dynamic Bible Study Methods)

Once you are convinced that a daily quiet time is needed for spiritual growth, then how do you go about having one? you may become motivated to do it, but may not know how.

Consider the following four essential elements of a good quiet time:

Start with the proper attitudes. Select a specific time. Choose a special place. follow a simple plan.

START WITH THE PROPER ATTITUDESIn God’s eyes, why you do something is far more important than what you do. On one occasion God told Samuel, “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward ap-pearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (I Samuel 16:7). It is quite possible to do the right thing but with the wrong attitude. This was Amaziah’s problem, for “he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not wholeheartedly.”(2 Chronicles 25:2)

WHEN yOU COME TO MEET WITH GOD IN yOUR QUIET TIME, yOU SHOULD HAvE THESE PROPER ATTITUDES.

ExPECTANCy. Come before God with anticipation and eager-ness. Expect to have a good time of fellowship with Him and re-ceive a blessing from your time together. That was what David expected: “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you.”(Psalm 63:1; see Psalm 52:1)

Page 15: New Believer Packet

REvERENCE. Don’t rush into God’s presence, but prepare your heart by being still before Him and letting the quietness clear away the thoughts of the world. Listen to the prophet Habakkuk: “The Lord is in His holy temple; let all the earth be silent before Him.” (Habakkuk 2:20; see Psalm 89:7) Coming into the presence of the Lord is not like going to a football game or some other form of entertainment.

ALERTNESS. Get wide-awake first. Remember that you are meeting with the Creator, the Maker of heaven and earth, and the Redeemer of men. Be thoroughly rested and alert. The best preparation for a quiet time in the morning begins the night before. Get to bed early so you will be in good shape to meet God in the morning, for He deserves your full attention.

WILLINGNESS TO OBEy. This attitude is crucial: you don’t come to your quiet time to choose what you will do or not do, but with the purpose of doing anything and everything that God wants you to do. Jesus said, “If anyone chooses to do God’s will, he will find out whether My teaching comes from God or whether I speak on My own.” (John 7:17) So come to meet the Lord having already chosen to do His will no matter what.

SELECT A SPECIfIC TIMEThe specific time has to do with when you should have your quiet time and how long it should be. The generalrule is this: The best time is when you are at your best! Give God the best part of your day – when you are the freshest and most alert. Don’t serve God your leftovers (leftover time). Remember too that your best time may be different from someone else’s.

for most of us however, early in the morning seems to be the best time. It was Jesus’ own practice to rise early to pray and meet with the father. “very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.” (Mark 1:35)

Page 16: New Believer Packet

In the Bible many godly men and women rose early to meet with God. Some of these were: Abraham – Genesis 19:27 Job – Job 1:5 Jacob – Genesis 28:18 Moses – Exodus 34:4 Hannah and Elkanah – 1 Samuel 1:19 David – Psalms 5:3, 57:7,8 (See also Psalms 90:14; 119:147; 143:8; Isaiah 26:9; Ezekiel 12:8)

Throughout church history, many Christians who were used most by God met with Him early in the morning. Hudson Taylor said, “you don’t tune up the instruments after the concert is over. That’s stupid. It’s logical to tune them up before you start.”

The great revival among British college students in the late 19th century began those historic words: “Remember the Morning Watch!” So we need to tune ourselves up at the start of each day as we remember the Morning Watch.

If Jesus is really in first place in our lives, we ought to give Him the first part of our day. We are to seek His kingdom first (see Mat-thew 6:33). Doctors tell us that the most important meal of the day is breakfast. It often determines our energy levels, alertness, and even moods for the day. Likewise, we need a “spiritual break-fast” to start our day off right.

finally, in the morning our minds are uncluttered from the day’s activities. Our thoughts are fresh, we’re rested, tensions have not yet come on us, and it’s usually the quietest time. One mother sets her alarm clock for 4:00 a.m., has her quiet time, goes back to bed, and then rises when everyone else in the household gets up. Her explanation is that with kids around the house all day, early morning is the only time when it is quiet and she can be alone with God. It works for her; you need to select a time that will work for you.

Page 17: New Believer Packet

you might even consider having two quiet times (morning and night). Dawson Trotman, founder of the Navigators, used to have code letters for his night quiet time—H.W.L.W. Whenever he was with a group of people at night or home with his wife and the con-versation seemed to be ending, he would say, “All right, H.W.L.W.” H.W.L.W. stood for “His Word the Last Word,” and he practiced that through the years as a way of ending a day with one’s thoughts fixed on the Lord (Betty Lee Skinner, Daws, zondervan, P. 103).

Stephen Olford, a great Christian and minister in New york for many years, said, “I want to hear the voice of God before I hear anyone else’s in the morning, and His is the last voice I want to hear at night.”

David and Daniel even met with the Lord three times each day (see Psalm 44:17; Daniel 6:10). Whatever time you set, be con-sistent in it. Schedule it on your calendar; make an appointment with God as you would with anyone else. Make a date with Jesus! Then look forward to it and don’t stand Him up. A stood-up date is not a pleasant experience for us, and Jesus does not like to be stood up either. So make a date with Him and keep it at all costs.

The question is often asked, “How much time should I spend with the Lord?” If you’ve never had a consistent quiet time before, you may want to start with seven minutes (Robert D. foster, Seven Minutes with God, NavPress) and let it grow naturally. you should aim to eventually spend no less than 15 minutes a day with the Lord. Out of 168 hours we all have during a given week, one hour and 45 minutes seems terribly small when you consider that you were created to have fellowship with God. Here are some addi-tional guidelines:

DON’T TRy fOR A TWO HOUR QUIET TIME AT fIRST. you’ll only get discouraged. you must grow in this relationship as you do in any other. So begin with a consistent seven minutes and let it grow. It’s better to be consistent with a short time than to meet for an hour every other week.

Page 18: New Believer Packet

DON’T WATCH THE CLOCk. Clock-watching can ruin your quiet time faster than almost anything else. Decide what you can do in the Word and prayer during the time you have selected; then do it. Sometimes it will take longer than you have set aside and sometimes less time. But don’t keep looking at your watch.

DON’T EMPHASIzE QUANTITy, EMPHASIzE QUALITy. There is nothing super spiritual about having a two-hour quiet time. It’s what you do during your time – 15 minutes or two hours or any-thing in between – that’s important. Aim for a quality relationship with the Lord.

CHOOSE A SPECIAL PLACEThe location, where we have our quiet time, is also important. The Bible indicates that Abraham had a regular place where he met with God (Genesis 19:27). Jesus had a custom of praying in the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives. “Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives and His disciples followed Him.” (Luke 22:39, emphasis added).your place ought to be a secluded place. This is a place where you can be alone, where it’s quiet, and where you will not be dis-turbed or interrupted. In today’s noisy Western World, this may take some ingenuity, but it is necessary.

It ought to be a place...Where you can pray aloud without disturbing others.Where you have good lighting for reading (a desk, perhaps). Where you are comfortable. (WARNING: Do not have your quiet time in bed. That’s too comfortable!)

your place ought to be a special place. Wherever you decide to meet with the Lord, make it a special place for you and Him. As the days go by, that place will come to mean a lot to you because of the wonderful times you have there with Jesus Christ.

Page 19: New Believer Packet

your place ought to be a sacred place. This is where you meet with the living God. Where you meet the Lord can be just as holy as the place where Abraham met God. you don’t have to be in a church building. People have their quiet times in their cars parked in a quiet place, in an empty closet at home, in their backyards, and even in a baseball dugout. Each of these places has become sacred to them.
