Dear fellow Rotarians
Maayong hapon sa tanan!
Allow me once again to congratulate the club for receiving the two major Global Grants in the last couple of days. First, our global grant application (GG1874420) for funding to provide cleft lip and palate surgeries to low-income children in Philippines and help the medical professionals receive capacity building training in Philippines and Japan. submitted by the Rotary Club of Cebu and the Rotary Club of Yokosuka. not to forsake the sacred. We look to
Thee for meaning and fulfillment to

WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK…
BUSINESS MEETING By: Walter Cang
Last week will probably rank as one of the biggest gatherings of guests and
visiting Rotarians in RCC. Even our DRFC Lilu Alinio and DS Barbette
Lominoque were in our midst! So were members of the Rotary Club of Banilad
Metro, led by their President Stella Siboa. Also with us was Lee Hall, a guest of
PP Bernard Sia. Lee surprised us with an act of generosity which I will cover
later in this update.
Our emcee, PAG Robin Ong, didn’t fail us as he dished out his unique quips and
helped break the ice for many of our guests. Fellowship singing was led by
RCBM President Stella, our guest from Habitat for Humanity, DRFC Lilu and DS
Barbette. The all-female quartet were warmly cheered by our members. During
President’s time, Pres. Mike was happy to announce the approval of 2 global
grant applications from our club, ROSAS VTT and the second one, the GoL VTT.
Acknowledgements were given to the people who worked on it behind the
scenes.
After his segment, PP Bernard Sia took the mic to specially introduce Lee Hall.
Lee is from Texas and married to a Filipina. He had signed up for the upcoming
Ironman 70.3 in Mactan. A week prior to the race, he lost his watch while whale
watching in Oslob. Because all triathletes rely heavily on their watch to pace
themselves and perform to their utmost, it was a difficult blow. Posting an SOS
to his Fil-Am triathlete contacts in the states, a member of that group reached
out to PP Bernard. Not only did PP Bernard lent him an extra watch, he also
extended his hospitality and showed him our city and kept him company while
Lee was in town. In the course of their conversation, PP Bernard told him about
Gift of Life and what we are doing.
Lee was so touched to hear our story that without any prompting, he decided to
donate $2,500 to our Gift of Life account! Not only that, he also announced that
he was going back to his employer, Google, and sign up our club to become a
beneficiary of their Google Match program, a CSR program that allows their
P a g e | 4 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF RC CEBU www.rotarycebu.org RY 2019-2020
employees to pick a beneficiary and donations to be matched by their employer.
An unfortunate loss of a watch that led to a simple but meaningful act of
kindness, that touched the life and heart of a non-Rotarian. We are blessed!
Thank you Lee and know henceforth that you have a family to count on in RCC.
Our guest speaker, Joey Rosel had graced one of our meetings last year. Habitat
for Humanity is a well-known NGO who had pioneered the opportunity for large
corporations and individuals to invest in “sweat equity”, the act of volunteering
their hours to help build homes for the less fortunate. Joey gave us an update
on what has happened since their last visit and presented ways by which Rotary
can help. He cited a program that was undertaken to build homes for a
community. Initially budgeted at a little over 100k per unit, inflation and
currency fluctuation had dealt a blow to their bottom line and they now had a
deficit to bridge. He encouraged us to consider adopting this project to help
them close the gap. Numerous ideas were presented on how best to tackle this
issue.
During the Q&A, a question raised was what about housing projects that were
finished but vacant or abandoned to this day? While they were not projects
undertaken by Habitat, it certainly begs the question how this could happen.
Among the reasons cited were non-consultation of plans by the LGU and
residents. Sadly, these decisions were made by the LGU to show results at the
shortest time, often forsaking due diligence and proper planning to ensure
viability.

P a g e | 16 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF RC CEBU www.rotarycebu.org RY 2019-2020
Learn from the PAST. Embrace the PRESENT. Hope for the FUTURE. Lead the NEW.
A new start of the Rotary year wouldn’t be
complete without anticipating and inviting new
aspiring members to join the club. The Rotaract
Club of Cebu once again conducted a Basic
Orientation Seminar for aspiring members of the
club last August 11, 2019 at Community Scouts
Youth and Guidance Center (CSYGC). It's with
honor and privileged for the club as we are graced
with the presence of Past District Governor Ed
Chiongbian as our guest speaker, his wife Cely
Chiongbian and Rtn. Ken Ngo who serves as Youth
Service Director of our mother club. PDG Ed's
credibility and tenure as a Rotarian was surely
something we look forward to learn insightful
knowledge and wisdom. While having Rtn. Ken's
presence will make us connect more and align our goals and concerns with our mother
club. This year's BOS was perhaps the biggest delegation for the club, with a total of 18
people (2 Rotarians and a wife, 4 Rotaractors, a Rotaract Adviser in Ms. Anna, and 10
aspirants) in attendance.
Though the event was a bit formal, it was not stiff and dull as PDG Ed showed continuous
interaction with his audience and smiled often. Both old and new aspiring members learned
together about Rotary and Rotaract in general, along with its underlying Protocols. The
audience showed great attention and interest during the talk and also participated well
PDG Ed Chiongbian with his opening remarks

during the open forum. President Jemar of RAC Cebu delivered his general goals and
expectations
for his term
during the
President's
time part of
the program.
Perhaps one
of the most
insightful part
of the
program was
during the
sharing of
expectations of the aspirants for the club. It was good to hear their reasons behind and
expectations how they came about in joining the club and what they look forward to. It was
pleasing to hear that almost all of them had service to others as their main goal on joining
the club. Some of them have been also a servant in other organizations. As seniors and
officers of the club, it's our duty to make sure that their expectations are met to the best of
our ability and they would feel belongingness as a family to the club.
All eyes and ears are set on PDG Ed Chiongbian as distinguished guest speaker during RAC Cebu BOS
Tokens and certificates were rightfully given to guests and aspirants with gratitude after a successful BOS

Tea Set
A girl was given a tea set for her
second birthday. It became one of her
favorite toys, and when her mother
went away for a few weeks to care for
her sick aunt, the toddler loved to
take her father a little cup of tea,
which was just water really, while he
was engrossed watching the news on
TV. He sipped each "cup of tea" he
was brought and lavished generous
praise on the taste, leaving the little
girl immensely proud.
Eventually the mother returned
home and the father couldn't wait to
show her how his little princess had
been looking after him. On cue, the
girl took him his "cup of tea" and he
sipped it before praising it to the
heavens.
The mother watched him drink it and
said: "Did it ever occur to you that the
only place she can reach to get water
is the toilet?"
