GENERAL MEETING: Wednesday, February 1, 2017 PROGRAM: Birthday Luncheon

WHERE: Doubletree by Hilton, 210 Holiday Court, Annapolis, MD WHEN: Cocktails at 11:30 am Luncheon at 12:30 pm

General meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month except February, July, and August.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: Patience Chaplin (410-224-2044) [email protected]

Happy Valentine’s Day to a club full of sweethearts!

I, for one, am so looking forward to our big February Birthday Luncheon on February 1, 2017. We will gather for a

luncheon extravaganza at the Doubletree Hotel in Annapolis starting at 11:30 am, a delicious lunch, with lots of prizes to

celebrate our 32nd birthday - an all-around uplifting afternoon of fun, food, and camaraderie!

The business end of my position dictates that I inform those of you unable to attend last month’s general meeting of the

following. It has come to my attention that Standing Rule #5 is in violation of both our own Bylaws and Robert's Rules

of Order. We cannot operate with standing rules that conflict with our Bylaws. Until we rectify this violation, we will

revert back to our earlier rule for membership: “New Annapolitans is open to residents who have moved to the greater

Annapolis area within two years of applying for membership” (Page 1 of our Directory).

Those of us who obtained membership through the "significant life-changing personal circumstance" (Amended

December 3, 2014), will be grandfathered in and are members in good standing for as long as we pay our annual dues.

The amendment made to Standing Rule #5 should have been in the Bylaws. Furthermore, the wording of any proposed

amendment to Bylaws and Standing Rules must be clearly defined and not ambiguous. I thank you for understanding this

course correction and I promise to keep you posted.

We have some wonderful programs coming up, stay tuned!

I’ll be looking for you ~

Card Groups

BRIDGE – BEGINNER & BEYOND (Mondays

1:30 pm – 3:30 pm)

Barbara Trotter (410-956-4720)

[email protected]

We are a group that meets every Monday from 1:30

pm-3:30 pm in the Park Place party room. We began

as a group of rusty bridge players who had played in

the past but needed instruction in catching up and

starting again. We have taken lessons and a number

are still pursuing improvement with lessons at the

Severna Park Bridge Club. We are low-key talking

about bidding, replaying the hands, and helping one

another learn. No pressure…just a fun group! You

must however, have a working knowledge of bridge

basics in the current style of Audrey Grant or similar

author/teacher as this group is not for someone who

has never played before.

Emails are sent out every Wednesday and you must

respond with an email by Saturday if you wish to play

on Monday. You will receive an email indicating your

response was received. We are going to try “first

come, first serve” in signing up to play until we have

full tables. Those who sign up after that will be put on

a substitute list and will be contacted. The number of

tables is NOT limited as long as there are 4 people for

each. Having complete tables makes playing bridge

so much more fun and challenging. We can keep

score properly which helps our bidding skills.

Consider joining us on Monday afternoons.

.

BRIDGE–INTERMEDIATE (1st Tuesday)

Sue Masten (302-245-5362)

[email protected]

Helen Alspector (703-728-6365) [email protected]

This is a social bridge game for intermediate players.

Many enjoy lunch at Café Mezzanotte before bridge

begins. We play party bridge where partners change

after every four hands. Each month an invitation is

sent via Evite to determine who will play. You also

can respond by email or phone. Tables are filled on a

first-come basis. If tables are full, you will be placed

on the list of substitutes for that month. Check with us

to make sure your name is on the Evite list and feel

free to contact us with any questions.

CANASTA CLUB – MODERN AMERICAN

(Every Monday, 1 – 4 pm)

Sue Pommers (978-697-8931)

[email protected]

Elaine Cook (410-384-9210)

[email protected]

This card group meets year round on Mondays from

12:30 pm–4:00 pm. We follow the American Canasta

rules and will help you get started if you’re a little

rusty or have played with another set of rules. We

meet in members’ homes and socialize for ½ hour

before we start playing at 1:00 pm.

Please contact either Sue or Elaine for the location for

the following week’s gathering. We welcome new

members to come, observe, and socialize if not yet

ready for playing. Come join us even if you’ve never

played before – we’ll teach you.

Linda Russell (845-558-2969) [email protected]

We are a group of music lovers who enjoy the

opportunity to share musical experiences

together. The group shares information about musical

happenings in the area. Members meet for an activity

if they are interested. The group also schedules

occasional events which generally include a tour,

musical performance, and dining out.

NEEDLEWORK GROUP

(1st and 3rd Thursdays, 9:30 am-noon)

Barbara Jaffe (240-731-6677) [email protected]

If you sew, knit, crochet, mend, darn, smock, or do

needlepoint or tapestry, or if you want to get some

help working these crafts, come to our needlework

meetings every 1st and 3rd Thursday mornings, all 12

months of the year. We meet at each other’s homes

from 9:30 am to 12 noon. The hostess for each

meeting provides finger food and drink. The meetings

are mostly about having free access to therapeutic

analysis, and to kibitz, talk, gossip, and solve the

world’s problems. This is very relaxing and a great

way to step out of the hustle and bustle of our busy

lives. If you would like to join us, notify Barbara

Jaffe.

We are meeting at Julia Persinger’s home on

February 2nd and Joyce Berkebile’s home on

February 16th. Emails to members will provide

contact information, addresses, and instructions for

parking.

are planned and led by a member of the group,

followed by an optional stop for coffee or lunch for

excursion walks. In inclement weather, we walk in

the Mall.

On Wednesdays, a group rotates through three local

locations – The Naval Academy, Eastport, and

Murray Hill, leaving at 8:30 am. We do not walk on

the first Wednesday of the month September through

June so that members can attend the General

Meetings. In inclement weather the walk is cancelled.

Details will be emailed to everyone on the group list

on the Sunday before the walks are scheduled.

For further information, contact one of the chairs.

Rebecca Pearson (410-919-8617)

New Interest Group Launching!

The New Entrepreneurs Think Tank will hold its first

meeting in early April and encourages all interested

members to sign up now. Have you dreamed about

starting a business? Turning a pastime into a paying

venture? Or do you run an enterprise of any kind now

and would benefit from a sounding board or problem-

solving platform? If you’ve owned a business in the

past, come share your experience and advice. If

you’re just curious, join the exploration and ask

questions!

The group will meet monthly in member homes, and

will initially be hosted by the leaders, Natalie

Canavor (author, consultant, and freelance writer) and

Rebecca Pearson (practicing artist and serial

entrepreneur). In addition to sharing ideas,

experience, and inspiring conversation, we anticipate

guest speakers and an occasional field trip to explore

marketing, business planning, using online media, and

lots more based on member interest.

Get in touch now and we’ll welcome your input in

planning this interest group. We’ll announce the first

meeting date next month.

the After Hours information on movies.

NEW PEDALPUSHERS

(Every Sunday morning at 9:00 am)

Sue Lynch (914-584-6602)

[email protected]

This new bicycling group will start up in the spring.

We will meet every Sunday morning at 9:00 am from

April through October, weather permitting. This

might expand to 2 days a week, depending on the

response of members. We hope to establish routes for

various distance abilities that would loop back to a

central location that will give the option of 5, 10, 15,

and 20 miles. We will bike at a pace of between 9 and

11 mph, and will periodically wait up for slower

riders. While New Annapolitans will not be liable for

any accidents on the road, helmets are required to

ride with the group. Sue would like a co-chair

because she is sometimes away on weekends. For

more information, call or email Sue Lynch.

RECOLLECTIONS (2nd Monday at 2 pm)

Stephanie Anderson (703-258-2491)

[email protected]

Our February meeting will be on Monday the 13th at

the home of Joan Blum. Please RSVP to Joan at

[email protected]. “Dancing” is the prompt.

We meet once a month to share short pieces that we

have written from our own experiences or insights.

The topic is selected by the hostess, and members

come to the meeting with a 2-3 page written response,

having interpreted the prompt in whatever way they

chose, and read them to the group. These musings or

recollections from our childhood, adolescence, and

adulthood allow us to share ourselves with others in a

safe environment. All things shared by others are

agreed to be held in confidence.

Although this is a great way to renew your interest in

writing, or further develop your writing skills, the

focus is not on writing style or expertise. There is no

critiquing of the writing, only sharing with supportive

friends. You are not required to write a paper for your

first visit. Contact Stephanie for meeting specifics

and/or to be placed on our email list.

SPANISH CONVERSATION GROUP

Darlene Duchene (410-991-2199)

[email protected]

Patti Muir (410-849-2542)

[email protected]

This is a lively group of women, many of whom are

native speakers of Spanish. Others are married to

native speakers of Spanish, have lived in Spanish

speaking countries for several years, or want to

refresh their language skills. We meet for lunch at

local Latin American restaurants to enjoy each other’s

company and to speak Spanish. Once on the mailing

list, you will be notified of future get togethers.

TENNIS ALL-COMERS

Maryann Gosnell (240-997-0256) [email protected]

Arlene Gletow (551-427-0533)

[email protected]

The All-Comers Tennis Group meets every Monday

at the Brigade Sports Complex (BSC). We all play in

the 3.0-3.5 level. We use SignUpGenius to organize

the players for each Monday. There is a charge to

play at the BSC, and guests (those who are not

Authorized Patrons) pay an additional $7 per person.

We have moved indoors at the Brigade, and play at

9:00 am- 11:30 am and/or 2:00 pm-3:30pm. If you

would like more information or would like to join our

group, contact Maryann Gosnell or Arlene Gletow.

WOMEN ON WATER (WOW)

Linda King (703-599-9646) [email protected] Anne Bastian (301-767-7754) [email protected]

It may be too cold to sail, but 25 sailors had a great

time thinking about the water in between meeting and

greeting new and old friends at the lovely home of

Linda King in Arnold December 5th. There was fine

food and drink and conversation and lots of laughter!

Ideas discussed were about chartering a sailboat on

the Bay, chartering a sailboat in the islands,

Watermark cruise to St Michael’s, and some kayak

venues. We hope the Woodwind schooners will also

be going out next year.

Excursions to Jug Bay to visit the Osprey nests and

Osprey banding and a tour of Poplar Island are among

other ideas.

We hope to get in a luncheon during the winter

months, so stay tuned!

Keep warm and think of blue waters and sunshine!!
