An Open Letter from 1,060 Law Students to President-Elect Donald J. Trump

Dear President-Elect Trump:
On behalf of America’s future lawyers representing 1,060 law students from 98 law schools, we strongly
urge you to withdraw your consideration of Senator Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) as nominee for Attorney
General of the United States.
The chief law enforcement officer of the United States and head of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ)
is sworn to preserve and protect the rights of every American. As noted on the DOJ website, Thomas
Jefferson wrote, “The most sacred of the duties of government [is] to do equal and impartial justice to
all its citizens.” This sacred duty remains the guiding principle for the DOJ.
Senator Sessions’s 30-year public service record is at odds with the duties and responsibilities associated
with the chief attorney of the United States. As a four-term member of the U.S. Senate, former Alabama
Attorney General and U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama, Senator Sessions consistently
opposed laws advancing civil rights, environmental protections, reproductive rights, criminal justice,
voting rights, immigration and marriage equality.
In 1986, a Republican-led Senate Judiciary Committee rejected Sessions’s nomination by then-President
Ronald Reagan for a federal judgeship due to past racist statements. During the unsuccessful
confirmation hearing, witnesses testified under oath that Sessions described a white civil rights attorney
as a “race traitor”; referred to a black attorney as “boy”; and called the ACLU, NAACP, the Southern
Christian Leadership Conference, National Council of Churches and other groups “un-American
organizations.”
During the 1986 hearing, a former colleague also testified that Sessions stated that he believed the Ku
Klux Klan was okay, until he learned its members smoked marijuana. When asked directly whether the
statement was insensitive, Sessions described his statement as “so ludicrous” such that nobody would
take offense to it, even though the case under discussion involved a black man who had been beaten
and hung.
Over his 30-year tenure, Senator Sessions consistently cast votes against anti-discrimination measures—
measures that an attorney general, who is sworn to preserve and protect the rights of every American,
should support. Just this past December, Senator Sessions rallied his colleagues against a Senate
resolution that reaffirmed that the United States must not ban people due to their religious beliefs. He
labeled the anti-discrimination measure "dangerous."
As hate crimes against minorities continue to rise, we need a nominee for Attorney General who is a
champion of civil rights and civil liberties. The ideal candidate should have a long standing commitment
to the principles of fairness and equal justice for all people. Senator Sessions is not that candidate. As
such, we urge you, President-Elect Trump, to withdraw your consideration of Senator Jeff Sessions as
nominee for Attorney General of the United States.
