Activities of Medical Education Unit – 2019
Activity - 1
Orientation Programme for Interns of 2019-20 Batch (19/03/19)
The Medical Education Unit conducted a One day Orientation Programme for the Interns of 2019-20 Batch on 19th March 2019 from 10.00 AM TO 03.00 PM
at Sri Rajendra Centenary Auditorium, JSS Hospital, Mysuru. A total 150 Interns attended the programme.
Dr. Arun, Convenor of Medical Education Unit, welcomed the dignitaries
to the dais. The programme began with address by Dr. H. Basavanagowdappa, Principal, JSS Medical College. He advised the fresh interns to make best use of
the resources available at the Hospital for their academic activities. Dr. (Col) M Dayananda, Director, JSS Hospital, spoke about the rules and regulations of JSS
Hospital. Dr. M Guruswamy, Medical Superintendent. JSS Hospital, spoke on the occasion and stressed about the medical ethics to be inculcated by the
interns. Dr. GV Manjunath, Vice Principal (Clinicals), JSS Medical College was present. Dr. Vijaya Vageesh, Member of Medical Education Unit, proposed the
vote of thanks. In the morning session, Dr. Manjunath VG, Ashwinin PK, Dr. Smitha Rani Dr. Prakash B and Dr. Pallavi, spoke about ‘Duties and
responsibilities of interns’, ‘Case sheet and prescription writing’, ‘Handling medicolegal cases’, ‘Introduction to Community Medicine Postings’, Blood Bank’
and Hospital Infection Control Programme’, respectively. This was followed by a Lunch Break. The post lunch session had ‘Interpersonal relationships and
communication skills’, held by Dr. Praveen Kulkarni, The concluding session was held by the first year Postgraduate student of Surgery, Dr. Sivambika, on ‘How
to make best use of Internship?’
The interns gave their feedback at the end, where they conveyed that the Orientation Programme was highly beneficial for their Internship programme and
the topics covered had a real value of application. A total of 150 postgraduates availed the benefit of the programme.
Activity - 2
Orientation Programme for postgraduates of 2019-20 Batch (16/05/19)
The Medical Education Unit conducted a One day Orientation Programme for the postgraduates of 2019-20 Batch on 16th May 2019at Sri Rajendra Centenary
Auditorium, JSS Hospital, Mysuru. A total of 122 postgraduates attended the programme.
Dr. Arun, Convenor of Medical Education Unit, welcomed the dignitaries to the
dais. The programme began with key note address by Dr. B. Manjunatha, Registrar, JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Mysuru. In his
address he gave a glimpse of JSS Mahavidyapeetha from its stage of inception to its present form of evolution. He called upon the new postgraduates to inculcate
good practices in academic and social values. This was followed with address by Dr. H. Basavana Gowdappa, Principal, JSS Medical College. He advised the fresh
postgraduates to make best use of the resources available at the Medical College and Hospital for their academic activities. Dr.M.Guruswamy, Medical
Superintendent. JSS Hospital, spoke about the rules and regulations of JSS Hospital. Later on postgraduates introduced themselves. Dr. Vijaya Vageesh
introduced all Heads of the Departments to the audience. Dr.P.A.Kushalappa, Director (Academics), spoke about the JSS Academy of Higher Education and
Research, highlighting the various facilities available for the post graduates to excel in the fields of research and innovations. Dr.G.V. Manjunath, Vice Principal
(Clinicals), JSS Medical College spoke on the occasion and stressed about the medical ethics to be inculcated by the postgraduate doctors in their day to day
activities. Dr.M.D.Ravi spoke on ‘Duties and responsibilities of postgraduates’. After the lunch break, Dr.Praveen Kulkarni, Dr.Vikram Patil and Dr.Deepthi T,
held sessions on ‘Interpersonal relationships and communication skills’, ‘Selection of topic for dissertation’ and ‘How to write Log book’, respectively.
The programme concluded with feedback from the participants and valedictory
function.
In their feedback, the postgraduates conveyed that the Orientation Programme was highly beneficial for their residency programme and the topics covered had
an immense value of application. A total of 122 postgraduates availed the benefit of the programme.
Activity - 3
Curriculum Implementation Support Programme (CISP) held under the aegis of St. John’s Medical College, MCI Nodal Center for Faculty Development.
(24th to 26th June 2019)
The Medical Education Unit conducted three days Curriculum Implementation Support Programme (CISP) under the aegis of St. John’s Medical College, MCI
Nodal Center for Faculty Development from 24th to 26th June 2019, at the Medical Education Unit, JSS Medical College, Mysuru. This programme was conducted
as per the MCI guidelines and it was held under guidance and supervision of the MCI Observer deputed from the Nodal Center, St. John’s Medical College, Bengaluru, Dr. Vandana Bharadwaj.
On day one, the programme began with inauguration by Dr. B. Manjunatha,
Registrar, JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research. He called upon the participants and stressed the need of getting trained in curricular related issues
to implement Competence Based Medical Education (CBME) from the current academic year of 2019. The activities began with ice breaking session and it was
conducted by all resource faculty of the Curriculum Committee comprising of Dr. Arun M, Dr. Suma KB, Dr. Manthappa M, Dr. Pushpa VH and Dr. Praveen
Kulkarni. All participants were made to answer pre-test questionnaire.
This was followed by introduction to CBME, by Dr. Praveen Kulkarni, ‘IMG:
Goals, roles and Competencies’ by Dr. Arun, ‘Linking competency objectives to Teaching Learning Methods (TLM)’ by Dr. Pushpa VH The participants were made
to work in groups and interactive sessions were held along with appropriate guidance and inputs from the MCI Observer Dr. Vandana Bharadwaj.
Other sessions were held on ‘Proposed changes in Graduate Medical Education
Regulations (GMER) 2019’, ‘Electives and concepts of electives in UG curriculum’ ‘Foundation course and Concept, components, timeframe & examples and
‘AETCOM Modules’. The day two began with recapturing the events of day one. During this day, ‘the Concepts and framework of Early Clinical Exposure’,
‘Concept and framework of Integration’ and Competency acquisition, and Skills lab were discussed. On the concluding day, ‘assessments in CBME’, ‘aligning
assessment to competency objectives & TLM’ were discussed. All participants felt that the three days workshop was beneficial for them to implement the new
curriculum. At the end of day three, a post test questionnaire was given to the participants. On analysis of pre and post test results, it was well evident that the
participants have got immense benefit from the programme. The valedictory was attended by the MCI Observer, Dr. Vandana Bharadwaj and all resource faculty
and participants. The MCI observer lauded the efforts of the Medical Education Unit for conducting an exemplary programme. She also distributed certificates of
attendance to the participants and resource faculty.
Activity – 4 25th and 26th July 2019: Curriculum Implementation Support Program (CISP) for the UG BOS
members and Heads of the Departments.
This programme was planned to orient the members of the UG BOS and Heads of all departments of JSSMC for the better implementation of CBME. The
contents of the programme were of concise form of the CISP proposed by the MCI document of GMER 2019. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. PA
Kushalappa, Director (Academics), JSSAHER and Dr. H. Basavana Gowdappa, Principal, JSSMC.
The programme covered the topics of ‘introduction to CBME’, ‘deriving Specific
Learning Objectives from the competencies and aligning them with Teaching Learning Methods, concepts of Foundation Course, Electives, Early Clinical
Exposure and AETCOM modules. The workshop also addressed on Alignment and Integration, skills training and assessment methods. The resource faculty
were from the team of Medical Education Unit and was managed by Dr. Arun,
Dr, Praveen Kulkarni, Dr. Manthappa, Dr. Suma KB, Dr. Pushpa VH and Dr.Soumya HV. A total of 30 participants added the programme.
Activity - 5
Induction Programme as a part of the month long Foundation Course for
MBBS Batch of 2019-2020
Induction Program was held on 01/08/2019 for the MBBS students of the batch
2019-2020 at Sri Rajendra auditorium, JSS Medical College, Mysuru. The event began at 9.30 am and was graced by the Chief guest, Dr Alexander Thomas,
President of National Board of Accredited Institutions, Dr Manjunatha B, Registrar, JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Mysuru; Dr
Kushalappa P A, Director (Academics), JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Mysuru; Dr Sudhindra Bhat, Controller of Examination, JSS Academy
of Higher Education and Research, Mysuru; Dr Suma M N, Vice Principal (Pre
and Para Clinical), JSS Medical College, Mysuru; Dr Manjunath GV, Vice Principal (clinical), JSS Medical College, Mysuru; Dr Arun M, Professor,
Department of Forensic Medicine and Convenor – Medical Education Unit, JSS Medical College, Mysuru; Parents, MBBS students of the batch 2019-2020 and
the teaching and the non-teaching staff of JSS Medical College were present.
Dr Suma M N, Vice Principal (Pre and Para Clinical), JSSMC welcomed the gathering. Followed by this, the dignitaries inaugurated the event by lighting the
lamp and Dr Manjunatha B, Registrar, JSS AHER released the academic calendar for the year 2019-2020. Dr Smitha M C, Assistant Professor, Department of
Community Medicine introduced the Chief guest- Dr Alexander Thomas following which, he delivered an insightful inaugural address, where he stressed on the
aspects that the undergraduate students have to focus during their career. Dr Alexander Thomas was given the token of gratitude by the Registrar, Dr
Manjunatha B. Following this, JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research and JSS Medical College was introduced to the parents and the students by Dr
Kushalappa P A, Director Academics, JSS AHER and Dr Manjunath G V, Vice Principal (Clinical), JSSMC respectively. Dr Sudhindra Bhat, COE, JSS AHER
appraised the audience on the rules and regulations of JSS AHER examination. Subsequently Dr Suresh K S, Chief Executive, JSS Law College, Mysuru
addressed the gathering on Anti-ragging and prevention of sexual harassment in which He provided an insight on ‘what amounts to ragging and sexual
harassment and the punishments for the same. This was followed by the Presidential address by Dr Manjunatha B, Registrar, JSS AHER in which He
stressed that ‘focus on work is the basis for success in career’ and then the morning session was concluded by vote of thanks by Dr Rajalakshmi R, Professor
and Head, Department of Physiology, JSS MC. Later on, the Heads of the preclinical departments (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry), introduced their
respective faculties. Dr Pushpalatha K, Professor and Head, Department of Anatomy, JSSMC provided on overview on Competency Based Medical
Education. There was an interactive session between the parents and the teachers and feedback was taken from the parents on the induction program.
The parents were very happy about the program conducted and ‘exclaimed that their children were in safe hands’.
Activity - 6 2nd August to 31st August 2019
Foundation Course: The Foundation Course was conducted from 02nd August 2019 to 31st
August 2019, as per the MCI directives. The content for the Foundation course has been suggested by the MCI in its Competence Based Medical Education
Curriculum. The overall objective of foundation course would be to sensitize the learners with essential knowledge and skills which will lay a sound foundation
for their pursuit of learning across the subjects in MBBS course and later on a career in medicine. Accordingly, the Foundation Course delivered by various
resource faculty from across different disciplines of Medicine, Law, Language, computer skills, life skills, yoga and sports and extracurricular activities. The
students were also taken to Hospital and community visits. Sessions were also held on ‘Alternate health systems’, by Dr. Rajesh Udapudi, Principal, JSS
Ayurveda College, Mysuru. Adequate exposure was provided in ‘Communication Skills and Interpersonal relationships’, as envisaged in GMER 2019 Document.
The other relevant topics covered in the Foundation Course were ‘professionalism, ethics and attitude’, ‘First Aid and BLS’,’ immunization of
Health care professionals, ‘Concept of biosafety, handling bio waste/biomaterial management’, ‘leadership skills’, ‘Medical humanities’ and ‘professional etiquette’
Activity - 7 30th August 2019:
White Coat Ceremony:
A White Coat Ceremony was held on 30/08/19 along with Cultural Programme by the students. During this programme the fresh graduates were
administered with White Coat Oath and were made aware of the importance of dignity and solemnity of medical profession.
Activity - 8 21st, 22nd and 27th, 28th August and 4th, 5th September 2019.
Hands-on workshop on Scientific Writing for I year postgraduates (2019-20 Batch)
Three sets of workshops of two days each were conducted for I year
Postgraaduates of JSSMC on 21st, 22nd and 27th, 28th August/and 4th, 5th September 2019. During the workshops, the Postgraduates were trained by the
faculty of Medical Education Unit on ‘Research Methodology’, Literature Search for dissertation’, writing research objectives’, ‘study designs’, ‘tools for data
collection’, ‘statistical analysis’ and ‘citing references’.
The two day workshop was planned with group activities, where all Postgraduates were made to present their dissertation as a part of ‘Protocol
development’ on day two. The resource faculty gave their inputs on the presentations to make it more acceptable from academic perspectives. The
workshop was attended by 120 Postgraduates and facilitated by Dr. Arun, Dr.Pushpalatha, Dr. Praveen Kulkarni, Dr. Madhu B, Dr. Ashwini PK, Dr.
Manthappa, Dr. Soumya and Dr. Pushpa, Dr. Smitha MC, Dr. Arun Gopi and Dr. Shwethasri.
