1 98O CONYENTION HIGHLIGHTSby Jerry Friedland

The rrConnecticut Conclaverr will beremembered by all r,rho attended as ahuge success. Bracl ancl Ann Chase weregreat hosts and we all thank them fortheir cord.ial welcome and. a r,sonclerfultime. Ann has been electeci officialHAS baker for life.

\-, The convention officially started. onThursday, May 1 , but on Tuesd.ay, April

29 a few early arrivals could be found..Bob Bennett and I drifteci in about4 p.m. after five clays of touring NevEngland. We tried to publish a book onour exploits but all the publishersturned it down insisting it was fic-tion. (Saitort s note: f rve traveledr^rith both of them. l{hat the publishersthought was fiction was undoubtedlywatered dovn from what realty occurred) !

I{hen we arrived. at the Sheraton inWind, sor w'e were greeted by Bill Russellwho along with Carl ancl Jean Hartmannwere the first to arrive. CarI and Jeanvere of course out antiquing. Wednesd.aysaw the five of us combing Connecticutfor books (and eating). 0n \{ednesd.aynight Brad Alexander, the real Algerhero of Bound to Rise, arrived in timeto take us all out for a greal Italiandinaer along r+ith Neil McCormick whoalso got in on Wednesday. Neil, in-cidentally, brought vith him one of thereal rare copies of Gold.en Argosy.(bound) containing among others "A Chitdof Fortune" which I was lucky enough toget from him. The Brockport Bul1et(Brad) had his usual run of luck, r,rinningthe Kentucky Derby pool (beating me outby one length). He also started andpractical-ly finished one of the bestMerriwell collections in existence in oneday and took home several of the Algerfirsts from the auction.

I v'as too tired to go to the home ofthe people who had the Merriwells (tne;.had only talked about having "otherbooks"). It turned out to be a 'trun" of750 original Tip-Tops in mint conditiontogether with their own chest forstorage. I canrt understand. why I wastired- considering all the sleep I had,but I have an idea young Brad may haveoutbidded me even though I understandhe helci his expenditures dolm to a mere$33rOOO this convention.

Thursd.ay saw the arrival of most ofour other members who attend-ed. and inthe evening we all went to the Chase I s'where we were treated. to the bestselection of cakes Reginald (tfratts *ybelly) has ever beheld. Lionel, Leo-pold and Stevart (Uetties belonging to Bob

'1 980 convention. f was in the mid.st ofcleaning up and it stopped. me right inmy tracks. ItBoyrrr I muttered to myself ,rif that just d.oesntt hit the nail onthe heatl!'r A rrhole lot of things hap-penecl here and that sort of says it all.

There vere no noises now in the }argeanil vacant room - no Alger talk and nosound of friends talking books and. col-lecting ancl sipping cokes as hacl beenthe case here for the last few d,ays. The refrigerator was empty ancl all thatvas left w'ere some sightseeing brochures,a map of Connecticut, the signs frcl madeto announce events, a few papers anclmany empty chairs arranged and. set rr*rerepeople had. placecl them as they gathered.hours before.

A11 of a suclclen it struck me }ike athund.erbolt that it was all over. Thehustle and bustle of the corrvention had.passecl - it rras history now. Hopefullypleasant memories vere etched in theminds of all the attend, ees and theirlives better enri-ched because theycame. I know ours were.

Hosting the convention was a big thingfor Ann ancl me. Ifetd. never cione anSrbhinglike that before. It was with sometrepiclation that ve accepted the

*responsibility a year ago. But nowthat itrs over and. we reflect on theevents and" activities that took place,w'e can hoth say that it 'was an extreme-Iy pleasant experience. The key, ofcourse, were the people antl their reac-tion to, ancl participation in, theactivities that took p1ace. It rras areal "kickrt for us and we sincerelythank all who came to our "Conclayerrand hope their experiences met theirexpectations. It r,ras a pleasure for usto be the catalyst anrl vatch (to para-phrase Stonets quote above) "fast andfirm friendships be made between Algerpeople who love Alger books.r'

ODDS AND ENDSby Brad ChasePresidentAlger Society

0n the rray from one bookstore toanother a few months ago, fellow IIASmember and Yice-Presiclent Bracl Alexand.erand. f were tooling along, just outside ofGreat Barrington, Massachusetts, when wespotteil a statue on the top of a foun-tain in the center of an apparentlylittle userl park. The statue was of aner+sboy ruming, carrying papers r:nclerone arm ancl vaving one with the otheroutstretched arm. We cticl a quick U-turnto investigate.

0n a plaque at the base of thefountain v'e found. the following: rtHarth-stone Insurance Company, Patrons, News-boy Restoration Fund in Honor of W.Clenent Stone. This Ner,rsboy Foultainwas presented. to Great Barrington by1{. L. Brown of the New York News (1895trrublication) on October 10, 1895. It isone of four in the world. that paystribute to the importance of the newscarrier in the production of the news-paper. October 7 , LgT)," [Editor t snote: See March, 1979 Newsboy forarticle on anothe= rr"w"b[ffitr.."].

As you may knorv, Brad. Alexander col-lects statues of newsboys, and" as rire

stood there in the rrarm afternoon sun,we speculated. for a fleeting momentrshether or not this multi-ton fellor, rwoulcl fit into the trunk of my Toyotaand horr nice it woukl look guarcl"ingBradrs living room bookcases. But weknerr that the statue and. fountain werefar more important to somebody elsebecause they r^rere both in nice cond.itionand the park was well maintained. 0b-viously, the Harthstone InsuranceCompany, the Newsboy Restoration Fund.or somebocly had gone to considerableexpense in placing this monr:ment tohonor the newsboy.

1{e were impressed., no question aboutit, ancl someyhat surprisecl. Ourcuriosity r,ras tlefinitely sparked.. GreatBarrington is located in the farrrestern part of Massachusetts, smack in

the mountains. ft is very beautifulNew England countrysicie ancl to find. aNers York-type nevsboy statue there is '\-/incongruous, to say the least! How-ever, our urge for new book fin<lsspurred. us on from the park ratherthan spending time trying to d-iscoverthe statuers background". But ve keptrrondering as we thought back to ourd.iscovery. Who is the HarthstoneInsurance Company? What is theNewsboy Restoration Fund,? I{hat hap-pened. on October 7, 1973 to apparentlyrecledicate a statue presented originallyin 1 895? Why was it presentecl on thatd.ate in the first place and d.id. Algerplay any role? 'hrhere are the otherthree fountains or statues locatedthat are referred to on the plaque?

Perhaps some of the Newsboy scholarsin the Society knorr the answers tothese questions. If so, perhaps theytdlike to share with the rest of us rrhathappears to be an interesting side ofthe American Newsboy story. If no oneknows anything about this poor soulstand"ing in the middle of westernMassachusetts ancl its story seems to \-/be rsorth pursuing, perhaps as I passthrough that area looking for lostAlger books at some future clate, I couldstop and make inquiry.

I keep telling my friend"s that there ismore to book hunting than just bookhr:nting and. this statue finrl is livingproof.
