Registration Insurance Requirements

Before you start the registration process, you should know that every car owner in Nevada is required to have financial protection, also known as liability insurance, in order to legally drive a car on any Nevada road or highway. This is vital, since you must carry proof of it at all times, as a law enforcement officer may ask to show it. You will also need to carry auto insurance before registering your car or renewing your registration.

Why do you need insurance? The DMV needs to ensure that you are protected in case you are part of an accident that may cause you injuries, damages or death.

Tip: If you do not know where to start looking for insurance options, visit the Nevada Division of Insurance, where you will find lists of approved Nevada insurance companies.

Nevada requires all cars to be insured by an approved licensed insurance company, and drivers must carry liability insurance with the following limits:

$25,000 for bodily injury or death liability per person per accident,

$50,000 for bodily injury or death liability of two or more people per accident, and

$20,000 for property damage liability per accident.

Even though the DMV establishes the minimum requirements of liability insurance, it is recommended you

choose higher coverage levels. Liability insurance pays for any injuries or property damages caused by you or others who are passengers or drivers of your car with your permission. If you are caught driving without proper auto insurance, you will be subject to fines and other penalties. Make sure you get insurance from an authorized insurance company in Nevada. When you buy your coverage, you will receive an insurance identification card which you must present for registration and carry with you all the time.

License Plates

Once you register your car in Nevada, you must display your license plates with recent registration stickers to prove that your registration is current and valid. License plates are as important as your driver’s license since they identify your car from other cars. The Nevada DMV issues license plates and registration stickers when you register your car for the first time or renew your registration.

Most Nevada license plates display black letters over a blue sky and mountain range, and are issued in pairs. Cars must have one plate displayed on the back, and one on the front of the car. The plates label what type of registration a car has and help law enforcement identify the car’s owner. Your license plates may be replaced in the event that something happens to them. Regular plates may also be replaced with special interest plates at an additional fee. If you are moving out of the state or are selling your car, you may be required to surrender your plates.

Vehicle Safety Tips

The most important thing to be sure of before you begin driving any vehicle is that both you and the vehicle are well prepared for the trip. This means checking the vehicle and making any necessary changes to your car or your behavior to make sure that you are able to drive safely at all times.

Emergency KitOne of the essentials of safe driving is having a basic emergency kit available in your vehicle at all times. This kit should include basic items such as jumper cables, a spare tire, tire pressure gauge, motor oil, and coolant. Items such as bottled water, flashlights, extra batteries, First Aid kits, and a tool kit can also come in handy during an emergency. During the winter months an emergency kit might look a little different. It is important to carry items such as blankets, extra gloves and socks, an ice scraper and snacks like granola or energy bars.

Page 25 | Car-Reg.org

Page 26: Nevada Car Registration€¦ · state of Nevada. Nevada-Resident Military If you are a Nevada resident and a military active who wants to register a car for the first time, just follow

Winter DrivingThe most dangerous time to drive each year is during winter, especially in areas where it snows. Therefore, it is best to consider these tips to drive safely during the winter:

Don’t Rush!

Roads covered in snow and ice tend to be slippery and make accidents more likely. When driving in icy conditions, it is best to avoid risking an accident by not driving erratically or in a rush. Driving slowly and cautiously and not rushing other drivers on the road can help you avoid winter-time accidents.

Don’t Panic If You Skid or Slip

In the event that your vehicle skids or slips on the road while driving, make sure you do not panic and slam down on your brakes. Staying calm and braking slowly and steadily can help you regain control of your car. If your car skids or slips, apply slow and even pressure on your brakes until your car reaches a full stop. This will prevent you from spinning further out of control.

Check Your Vehicle

Before you leave for destination, it is important to make sure your vehicle is working properly. Check your car’s controls, brakes, water tank, tires, transmission fluid, headlights and taillights to ensure all are working properly. It is also important that you remove all ice and snow from your car before you begin driving; this prevents the snow from blocking your view while you drive.

Page 26 | Car-Reg.org

Page 27: Nevada Car Registration€¦ · state of Nevada. Nevada-Resident Military If you are a Nevada resident and a military active who wants to register a car for the first time, just follow

Drinking And DrivingEvery year, thousands are involved in fatal accidents due to drinking and driving. This is something that is easily preventable. Planning ahead of a party or any occasion where you will be drinking can help you avoid the consequences of drinking and driving.

Before you begin drinking, you should arrange for someone else to be the designated driver. In the case that they also become intoxicated, it is important that you arrange for a taxi or ridesharing driver to pick you up. Never allow someone drunk to drive. Instead, take away their keys and call for alternative transportation.

If you see someone who you suspect is drunk, and they exhibit signs of intoxication while driving such as making wide turns, weaving, swerving, braking erratically, or turning abruptly, contact authorities immediately by dialing 911. Make sure to avoid these drivers on the road to ensure your own safety.

Using Your Phone Driving while using your cellphone is one of the most dangerous things you can do. During those few seconds your attention is diverted to your phone, a major accident could occur. You can prevent accidents by not texting, using Internet or apps, or receiving calls on your phone while you drive.

Things To AvoidDriving is not always a relaxing experience. Some actions taken on the road can be both an annoyance and dangerous. While not all issues on the road are preventable, there are certain steps you can take to minimize negative experiences while driving.

Page 27 | Car-Reg.org

Page 28: Nevada Car Registration€¦ · state of Nevada. Nevada-Resident Military If you are a Nevada resident and a military active who wants to register a car for the first time, just follow

Car Accidents

The best way to avoid car accidents is to ensure that your vehicle is safe to drive and will not cause you any problems. To do this, you must regularly check that your brakes are functioning properly and that your tires are inflated and not worn out. Taking your car to a mechanic for regular maintenance ensures that your car is always in top working condition.

Wasting Gas

As the price of gas goes up, you may start looking for ways to save on those expensive trips to the pump. Saving on gas is something that is possible if you take a few steps towards ensuring that you waste less gas.

Some ways you can start saving gas are not using air conditioning in your car, not leaving your engine running idle, or driving above 60 mph. These things are preventable and not necessary for you to drive, therefore you can quickly reduce the amount of gas you waste.

Another way to save on gas is to make sure that your vehicle is functioning properly, you can do this by checking that your tires are properly inflated, your engine is well tuned, and check that the octane level of the fuel you purchase is the correct amount for your car.

Aggressive Driving

Aggressive driving and drivers are both things that should be avoided to prevent any on-road aggression or accidents. Aggressive driving is defined as exhibiting behaviors such as aggressive tailgating, verbal or physically harassing another driver, and preventing another driver from merging or passing.

However, if you are an aggressive driver, you are putting others at risk every time you do any of the above behaviors. If you encounter a frustrating situation on the road, instead of becoming aggressive, take a moment to breathe and relax before moving on.
