Neutrino mass and mixing → Neutrino oscillation

How do neutrinos oscillate?

What is the absolute neutrino mass?

Are neutrinos their own antiparticles?

Are there more than 3 neutrinos?

Is there CP violation?

FNAL

2 neutrino beams on site (of 3 in the world!)

Create muon neutrino beam using the particle accelerator complex just like how neutrinos are produced in the upper atmosphere

Send the muon neutrinos over 500m to the MicroBooNE detector

Look for electron neutrinos that have appeared in the beam!

Other interactions that produce single photons

Neutrino hits the argon and

produces charged particles.

The particles produced tell you

about the neutrino -> flavor

-> energy …

Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBN)

• Muon (and anti-muon) neutrinos oscillating to electron (and anti-electron) neutrinos

• Travel a baseline of 1300km from Fermilab to and old gold mine in Homestake South Dakota

• Put a MASSIVE Liquid Argon TPC deep underground to measure neutrinos

(this will take a while and cost a lot of money so while we are involved, not so actively day to day right now….)

“Men [and women] wanted for hazardous journey.  Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.”
