Hmmm…Acid inside of me?

The human stomach produces hydrochloric acid (HCl), commonly known as "stomach acid“ or “stomach juice”

Stomach acid is made when you eat something, but when a person eats something requiring the stomach to work EXTRA hard—say, a pizza—the stomach may generate EXCESS hydrochloric acid, and the result is HEARTBURN

Inside your insides…the human stomach

When this happens, people often take antacids, which contain chemicals such as…

aluminum hydroxide (Al[OH]3)

ormagnesium

hydroxide (Mg[OH]2)

What do these chemicals have in common?

Page 5: Neutralize Em! December √100, 2.009 *10 3 Objective: SWBAT predict the products of acid-base neutralization reactions Catalyst: Write down the

THEY ARE BASES!!!!!! DUH Mr. Jhaveri!

True…taking an antacid when there is excess acid in your stomach neutralizes the acid.

HCl + Al(OH)3 →

We learned about 5 types of reactions…What type of reaction is this??

FLASHBACK!!!!!!!

A double-replacement reaction is one in which ions switch places.

AX + BY AY + BX Two couples are dancing and decide to switch

partners!

Example: MgO + CaS

SOMg Ca

+O S

Mg Ca+

Back to Reality…

THEY ARE BASES!!!!!! DUH Mr. Jhaveri!

True…taking an antacid when there is excess acid in your stomach neutralizes the acid.

HCl + Al(OH)3 →We just turned that aggressive acid into neutral old water…

AlCl3 + H2O

So, What will be the products of this reaction? DON’T FORGET TO KRISS KROSS!

Neutralization!

KEY POINT #1: A neutralization reaction is a double-replacement reaction in which an acid and a base react in to produce water and a salt

Now…A salt is NOT just NaCl (table salt…) A salt is an ionic compound made up of a

cation from a base and an anion from an acid

Acid + Base Water + Salt HY + X(OH) H2O + XY DON’T FORGET

TO KRISS-KROSS!!!!

ACID BASE SALTWATER

Neutralization Reactions

Write the balanced chemical reaction for hydrochloric acid and Sodium Hydroxide

HCl + NaOH →NaCl + H2O

Ionization Equations

What happens if we just place an acid or base in water?

It Ionizes, or breaks up into ions

Key Point #2: An ionization equation shows the ions that result when an acid or base is dissolved in water

H+

(SO4)2-

H+

H2SO4

Ionization Equations

Key Point #3: An ionization equation shows the cation (+) and anion (-) that result when an acid or base dissociates when dissolved in water

H2SO4

How do we know that H2SO4 becomes H+ and (SO4)2-?

Because it is an ionic compound! We had to Kriss Kross to get the subscripts!

H+

(SO4)2-

H2SO4

Exit Ticket

Write the balanced equation for the following acid-base neutralization Lithium hydroxide and Hydrochloric Acid

If you take a Tums with 4.5x10-5M [OH-] and there is 5.5x10-9 M [H+] will all of the acid be neutralized?
