A new riddle

In WSN 40 we were asking about this “lady, called

“Lucy”

Elephant to starboard

The outer islands of the Southern Jersey coast are romantically entwined with legends of pirate chieftains fighting battles to the death on sandy beaches, of buried treasure beneath every dune, of whalers rushing for boats when the cry of "Thar' She Blows" echoed from lookout stations. Mysterious cargoes landed in the dead of night and were quickly gathered by horsemen who disappeared in the deep shadows of the pines, according to legend. Pages of the past are so cluttered with this type of adventure that even dedicated historians are hard put to separate fact from fiction. However, no legend of the colourful Southern Jersey seashore history matches the sight of a 65-foot high wooden elephant astride the beach looking out into the mists of the sea, a spectacle that according to historians made many coastwise seamen of the tramp ships from the West Indies swear off their rum rations for days. There is the story of one young seaman on his first voyage who had the early evening watch as his ship made it up the coast on its way to New York harbour. After first reporting "All's well" he suddenly yelled "Elephant!” The captain thinking the seaman had gone berserk rushed to the deck. Lifting his long glass to the shoreline he also exclaimed: "Elephant!", wiped off his glass and after a second look confirmed the fact that there was a giant beast standing among the dunes and eel grass of lower Absecon Island. The captain's report at anchoring in New York

harbour brought a score of news people and the curious southward into New Jersey to investigate. After a long, dusty ride from the upper part of Absecon Island to what was then called South Atlantic City, the investigators found that the elephant was no mirage. Here it stood in full majesty, king of all it surveyed. Metropolitan newspapers the next day were telling the story of a wooden elephant, which later would become known as "Lucy", much to the delight of land speculator James V. Lafferty, Jr., who was responsible for the designing and building of the strange pachyderm.

If you are interested in reading more about Lucy, the elephant, please visit her homepage: www.lucytheelephant.org Here’s a new riddle for you:

Who knows the name of this traditional food and where can you find it?

If you know the answer, kindly revert to Mrs. Böckmann.

Wärtsilä Training Academy -26 engine-cadets on boardvisit on MV WESTEREMS

As some of you might have heard already, our company has launched an engine cadet program together with the other principals of the Hanseatic Training Institute (HTI) at the Wärtsilä Training Academy in Subic Bay, Philippines. During a visit to Manila, Mr. Jebsen took the opportunity to visit the impressive facilities of the Training Academy together with Mr. Ioannis Zanos, training manager at HTI in Manila.

On November 15th , 2011, an entire class of 26 engine cadets visited MV WESTEREMS together with their trainers during her berthing in Manila in order to get a first impression of their future work environment.

Captain Markov explained the basic safety matters for visitors on board and presented a personal familiarization booklet about the vessel. Then, everybody proceeded to the engine control room, where Chief Engineer Strohschein explained the main structure of the engine department and machinery equipment on board, purpose of main engine, auxiliary engines and related aggregates to and around them and gave a tour of the engine compartments.

Farewell

On February 10th 2012, Mrs. Karla Kwauka, had her last day in the office. She has been working with the company since 1984 and became to be the “pearl” of our accounting department.

Mrs. Kwauka and Mrs. Wulf-Pohlmann have been working side by side for more than 12 years.

Mrs. Kwauka and Captain Manthe, who was already with the company when she started. They sure shared “good and tough times”!

Stow away… “Stowaway”

In our last issue we were reporting about a “stowaway” on MV Westermoor, also known as purple heron (“Purpurreiher”) as Captain Kramp knew. Apperently there are more curiosities to be seen, lately another “stowaway” on MV Westerhamm:

This picture was taken from Chief Mate Kukanov, whilst checking the draft marks in Kingston/Jamaica, on February 10th, 2012. The dog was sitting on the bulbuous bow and “disembarked” only after the vessel turned and departed – rescued by a tug boat.

This big fish was caught on MV Westertal!
