Bibliography of the Vajracchedikā-sūtra, or Diamond Sutra

I prepared this list of editions and translations of the Diamond sūtra for my own convience, it is being shared here in this form freely in case others find it a useful resource. I am not a scholar of Chinese, Japanese or Korean and so have included original characters (where available to me) in an attempt to facilitate the work of scholars in those traditions. Reprint: Amsterdam: Oriental Press, 1972.Paul Harrison has made detailed comparisons between the 1881 edition by Müller and some of the original source materials, tracing them back to original materials sent from China to Japan by Ennin 圓仁 (792-862) (Harrison 2008, 212).

1 Harrison suggests there are two versions: the “Shorter recensions” (represented in the Gilgit, Schøyen collection and Stein manuscripts) and the “Longer recensions” (represented by the editions of Müller and Conze) (Harrison 2008, 219).

The Gilgit text belongs to an older recension than the one used by Muller for his edition of 1881. The 1989 edition of the Gilgit text by Gregory Schopen is apparently more reliable (Harrison 2008, 213). The Gilgit manuscript, which dates from the 6th of 7th

century, covers only the second half of the text. (Harrison 2008, 214).

“Edward Conze had [Müller’s (1881) Pargiter’s (1916) and Chakravarti’s (1956)] versions available to him ([but not Schopen’s … [1989] of course) when he reedited the text in 1957. His edition has become the standard point of reference, even though it largely reproduces the text as established by Müller, while adding to it information about the Stein and Gilgit manuscripts (not always complete or correct) and a fair number of mistakes” (Harrison 2008, 213).2nd edition, with Corrections and Additions (Rome: IsMEO, 1974).

Xuanzang (Taisho 220 IX)“Xuanzang’s version is for the most part a genuine new translation of the Indic text.” (Harrison 2008, 243).

Yijing (Taisho 239)“Yijing also seems to be ready to go to any length to maintain a four-character prosodic pattern. All in all, his translation of the Vaj is little more than a pastiche of previous versions, heavily reworked; its value for text-critical purposes is practically nil” (Harrison 2008, 243).

Abstract: This paper attempts to make intelligible the logic contained in the Diamond Sutra. This ‘logic’ is called the ‘logic of not.’ It is stated in a propositional form: “A is not A, therefore it is A.” Since this formulation is contradictory or paradoxical when it is read in light of Aristotelian logic, one might dismiss it as nonsensical. In order to show that it is neither nonsensical nor meaningless, the paper will articulate the philosophical reasons why the Sutra makes its position in this contradictory form. The thesis to be presented is that as long as one understands the “logic of not” from a dualistic, either-or egological standpoint, it remains contradictory, but in order to properly understand it, one must effect a perspectival shift from

the dualistic, egological stance to a non-dualistic, non-egological stance. This thesis is advanced with a broader concern in mind: to reexamine how the self understands itself, how it understands others, and how it understands its intra-ecological relationship with nature. “When one side is illuminated,/ the other side remains in darkness.” (Dōgen (1200—1253), Genjōkōan.
