EconomicandcommunitydevelopmentisoneofRotary’ssixareasofTheRotaryFoundation’sfocus.Nearly 1.4 billion employedpeople liveon less than $1.25 aday. Rotary members promoteeconomic and communi tydevelopmentandreducepovertyin underserved communitiesthrough training, well-payingjobs, and access to financialmanagement i n s t i tu t ions .Projects range from providingpeople with equipment tovocational training. We work tostrengthen local entrepreneursa n d c ommun i t y l e a d e r s ,p a r t i c u l a r l y w om e n , i nimpoverishedcommunities.U n e m p l o y m e n t ,underemployment, lack ofeconomic opportunity, lack ofappropriatetraining,and theabsenceof socialsafetynetslieatthecoreofpoverty.Forthepoor, laborisoften the only asset available to improve well-being. Creating productive employment opportunities isessentialforreducingpovertyandachievingsustainableeconomicandsocialdevelopment,andforprovidingincomesecurityandempowermentespeciallyforwomen,peoplewithdisabilities,youth,andtheextremelypoor.Determiningyourcommunity’s needsandresourcesis animportantstartingpointforanycommunityproject.Communityassessmentsidentifythecommunity’sstrengths andweaknessesandhowRotarianswillbeabletoworkwiththecommunitytomeetitsneeds.Itisvitaltoconductacommunityassessment,ofteninconjunctionwithacooperatingorganization,beforestartingyourproject.Remembertoconsiderthehistorical,cultural,and socialdynamicsof thecommunitywithwhichyou wish topartner. You’ll not only identify thecoreneedsand select themost appropriateproject,butwillalsoensuresupportandsustainabilityforyourendeavors.

Freevegetablegardenssproutingup–APotentialLocalProject?Nowthatyou’vedonetheplanning,imagineacommunitywheretheresidentsareallfreetoplant,grow,harvest,andeathealthyfoodwhenevertheywantwithouthavingtopayforit.That'sexactlywhatresidentsofmorethan20citiesandtownsinFrancearedoingthroughaprojectcalledPotalib.LaunchedbytheRotaractClubofVersailles,PotalibwasinspiredbytheIncredibleEdibleproject,aninternationalfood-sharingmovementfoundedbyNickGreeninEngland.TheRotaractmembersobtainedGreen'spermissiontoapplytheconceptinFrance,changingthenameto"Potalib,"acontractionof"potagerlibre"(freevegetablegarden).Theclubregisteredthename,createdabrand,andnowsellstheprojectasakittoFrenchinstitutions,localcommunities,andcorporations.Thematerialsincludeseedsforasmanyas18kindsofvegetables,informationonhowtocultivatethem,and12woodenbins,eachaboutacubicmeterinsizeandfilledwitharound270kilogramsofsoil.Incitieswherethegardensareplanted,theclubsponsorsafestiveopening-dayceremony,featuringafreemealcookedbyclubmembersandaprofessionalchef."Thegoalisquitesimple:Togiveeveryone,fromthewealthiesttothepoorest,theopportunitytoeatqualityvegetables,"saysClubPresidentThibautMathieu.

MicroLoans&FinancialLiteracyTrainingforWomenEntrepreneursAtheart,entrepreneursareproblemsolvers– they identifyaneedandmeet itwithaproductorservice.Nowherearetheirproblem-solvingskillsmoredesperatelyneededthaninthedevelopingworld.Handoutsfrom the foreign aid community have proved incapable of solving the development issuesplaguing theworld’s poorest. A hand up to budding entrepreneursmay be the development tonic needed.Womenperform66%oftheworld’sworkandproduce50%ofthefood,butearnonly10%oftheincomeandown1%to2%oftheproperty.

Globally, women invest their earningsinto their familiesat astaggering rateof 80%,doubletherateofmalewageearners.Micro loan programs can bebeneficial, especially for women, inboth rural and urban communities.Entrepreneurs in rural communitiesmay borrow money for catt leacquisition orfattening,dairy farming,agricultural cultivation, bamboomaking,weaving,settingupsmallretailshops in their homes, and so on.Entrepreneurs inurbanareasusemicroloans, for example, to become streetvendors, rickshaw drivers, or tailors.You can add the micro creditsupplementwhenapplyingforaglobal

grant for an entrepreneurship programwithmicrocreditcomponents.IfyouplantouseRotarygrantfundsforloancapital,you’reencouragedtocontractwithamicrofinanceinstitutionasthepermanentlendinginfrastructureinthecommunity.“IbelieveeveryonerecognizestheopportunitytoserveRotaryforwhatittrulyis-notasmallopportunity,butagreatone;anopportunityofalife=metochangetheworldforthebe?er,foreverthroughRotary’sservicetohumanity.”-JohnGerm

Thomas Houlden 18, has found his National Youth Science Forum award last January to be a life-changing experience. With help from Bendigo RC and his school, Bendigo Catholic College, he went on to win a mid-year three-week trip to XLab in Gottingen, Germany for a more advanced science camp with 19 international students.XLAB’s19studentswerefromeightcountriesandspoke12languages,creagngaculturalcocktailwhilestudentstookininsightsfromleading-edgesciengstsinbiology,chemistryandphysics.“Ifocusedonbiology,takingcoursesinneurophysiology,molecularbiologyandimmunology,”Tomsays.“Weanalysedbloodsamplesforspecificanggens,genegcallyalteredbacteria,sgmulatedneuronsignalsandanalysedthevisualsystemofinsects.“Igotaglimpseintowhatresearchisactuallylike,thefailures,thetedium,theobsessionwithdetail,theendlessdatacollecgon,thesuccessesandmostimportantly,thededicagonto‘findingthingsout’.”SincehisreturnfromGermany,he’sbeenafrequentspeakeratmanyRotaryandschoolgroups.“I’velearnthowtofakeconfidence,”hejokes.“Post-NYSFisanewchapterofmylife-theconnecgons,thefriendships,theskillsandtheexperiencewillstaywithmeforever.“Tom’smotherHelenSextonisfullofpraisefortheRotaryprogram:“I’vebeenamazedatTom’spersonalgrowth,stargngfromhispreparagontomeettheselecgonpanels,andnowreflectedinhisabilitytodopublicspeaking.He’sbeenexposedtonewfieldsofscienceandhe’swellplacednowtomakegoodchoicesabouthistergarystudycourses.”

Cambodianteachersinremoteruralareashavenoaccesstoanyprofessionaldevelopmenttraininga^ertheirverylimitediniNalteachertraining.Someofthemhaveonlycompletedprimaryschoolthemselvesandnowaretryingtoeducatechildren.TheteachingmethodsinCambodiaarerudimentarytosaytheleast.Classsizesofover60,methodsthatwecouldperhapsidengfywithbackinthe1930-1950’swithcorporalpunishmentusedextensivelyandrotelearning.OnSaturdaySeptember17th,fiveAustralianvolunteerteachersleyforCambodia.TheyaregivingtheirschoolvacagongmetovolunteerinremoteareasofCambodiatotrainCambodianteachers.InJanuaryateamoffourteachersundertookapilottrainingworkshop,whichIwasingmatelyinvolvedwith.Itwasaresoundingsuccess.TheCambodianteachersweresorecepgvetootherstylesofteaching.Tofindthatchildrencouldlearnbylaughterandengagementwithsgmulagngenergizergamestocapturetheirimaginagonwasawholenewworldtotheseteachers.Theyembracedtheconceptsandsoakedthemup,eagertotaketheideasbacktotheirclassroomsandtrythemoutwiththechildren.Atthecomplegonoftheworkshopsmanyoftheteacherstudentshadtearsofjoyfromthesenseoffulfillmentoffourdaysofintensetrainingfrommodernmethodologyinteachingstrategies.TheybeggedtheAussieteacherstoreturn.Itwasthefirsttasteofsuchanexperienceeverintheircareers.ThefundingfortheJanuaryteamwasprovidedbyRotaryviaaDistrictsponsoredFoundagonGrant.SuchwasitssuccessthataFoundagonGlobalGrantapplicagonhasbeensubmikedtofullyfundanannualprogramtotrain200teacherseachyearfortwoyears.ThiscapacitybuildingwillbestrategicandleavetheteacherswithsuchtrainingthattheywillcongnuetheprogramwithoutAustralianintervengonayerthatgme:i.e.itissustainable.12monthsbetweenthepilotprogramandthenextimplementagonphaseseemedtoolongthoughandtheteachersbeggedusforanotherworkshopin6months.TheAustralianteachersagreedthatayer12monthstheknowledgedrainwouldhaveprobablyoccurredandoldhabitsreturned.ApleafromtheteacherswastranslatedbyRithy,aRotarianwiththeRotaryClubofPhnomPenhandprojectmanagerof“WorldofDifference”inCambodia.Itwascapturedonvideo,andplayedoverandoveronFacebook.Soyesterday,withtheteachersvolunteeringtheirgmeitishappeningagain:anothergroupslokedinmidwaybetweentheannualprogram,justthisonceandprivatelyfundedundertheauspicesofRotary.40kmsfromSiemReap:a4-dayworkshopfor100teachers,thenKampongSpeu(2hoursfromPhnomPenh)another4-dayworkshopfor100teachers.FiveAustralianteachersworkingwithfourteachertranslatorsfromPhnomPenhsidebysideintheclassroomteachingremotevillageteachers,manyofwhomhavehadliklemorethanaprimaryschooleducagonthemselves.Somehavehadadiploma1yearcourse,butnonehavehadanyprofessionaldevelopmentintheircareers.Thisisamazing.TwooftheteachersvolunteeredtheirschoolholidaygmesinJanuaryandnowarespendingtheirengreholidaysagainvolunteering,suchistheinvestmenttheyarewillingtocontributetothisprogram.BothofthemarereturningagaininJanuary2017.Thisgenerousandhugeheartedteamandtheireagerteacherstudentscanbefollowedandencouragedathkps://www.facebook.com/D9800VTTCambodia.
