UNIVERSITY

University of Nebraska Pre-aggregation Situation

Page 8: Network Nebraska

Network Needs

• Aggregation of Bandwidth – Reduce cost

• Ability to scale the size of the network

• Quality of Service/Redundancy

• Service Level Agreements

• Ability to mix network designs– That meet State & University network needs– To consolidate network support functions

Page 9: Network Nebraska

Services

• Internet 1 aggregation – primary service

• Internet 2 – SEGP by July 2004, lots of interest

• Transport network – Telehealth, homeland security, etc.

• Video Services

• Others (email, file servers, etc)

Page 10: Network Nebraska

Backbone Phases

• 0 - Scottsbluff project

• 1 - Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island, Kearney – Alltel is provider with MPLS network

• 2 - North Platte, Norfolk, Alliance, Grand Island – Qwest is provider with ATM network

Next Steps

• Identification of additional aggregation points• Encourage Customers to subscribe

– ESUs 10,11,15,16,18 (maybe 13,14 and others)– Wayne State College– Interest from several community colleges– Creighton– Nebraska Hospital Association

• Expect 100 meg of I1 service by July 2004• But, ISPs are lowering prices to compete

Possible Network Nebraska Extension

Page 14: Network Nebraska

Problems

• No money and State budget continues to fall• ISPs are becoming more competitive• Still no money• Most issues are not technical – policy/polictics
