MERINO WETHER CHALLENGE

On the 26th and 27th of August 2014 nine Agriculture students attended the Rabobank Dubbo National Merino Sheep Show and Ram Sale and competed in the Schools Wether Challenge. The students that participated at the competition were: Rebecca Priest, Sophie Clayton, Lauren Fessey, Ashley Rapley, Tarryn Miles, Erin Abrahams, Sarah Fessey, Ben Kirk and Sam Cummings. There were nine schools involved in the competition with 21 teams of merino wethers entered. The two teams of wethers were up against strong competition and the best result we achieved was 9th in the combined carcase valuation for our larger team of wethers that were named the Three Musketeers. At the competition the University of New England ran a quiz on the knowledge that students have about the sheep and wool industry. Individually in this quiz Sarah Fessey in Year 10 came second overall, winning herself a trophy and $50. As a school team, Molong Central School also came tied second with Gulgong High School, only to be beaten by Yanco Agricultural High School. The students had a great but long two days at the competition where they learnt new sheep handling skills, understood the shearing and the scanning for meat process and participated in the junior judging competition, where they had to judge wool and judge and handle rams that were probably twice their weight. They did an amazing job, congratulations to all the students involved. I would like to thank two local breeders for supporting the school by donating merino wethers, Chris Blowes from Jandon Park who donated 4 fine wool / prime lamb wethers and Grant Christopherson from Ridgeview who donated 3 superfine wool wethers. I would also like to thank Janelle Fessey for helping to organise and deliver the wethers from local breeders and for helping on both days in Dubbo, driving students to and from the show; Kathy Miles and Jenny Abrahams for also driving students to and from the show; and Elaine Priest for getting involved with the shearing, classing and scanning of all the fleeces at the show. Without the help and support of all these people in our local community it would not have been possible for the Agricultural Show Team to compete at this competition, many thanks once again. The Agricultural Show Team will next be competing at Molong Show on the 21st September 2014 where we will be exhibiting Murray Grey Cattle (with the help and support of Graham Hobbs and the Hobbs family), 2 calves, the Merino wethers that attended the Merino Wether Challenge in Dubbo and poultry. We welcome the Molong community to come and support us at the show. Miss Renee Lidgard, Agriculture Teacher.

The Fairy Tale Network a Resounding Success! Last week all students in K-6 participated in our 2014

involved our Junior and Senior Dance Troupe and our

thankyou to all of our teachers who prepared the class

acts for your enjoyment. A lot of time and effort was

Reduce, reuse, recycle Australians throw away 3.3 million tonnes of food

every year – up to a quarter of the country's food

supplies - mainly because we purchase too much.

Consider planning your meals and only buy what

you need. Reduce packaging in your child’s

lunchbox and use re-usable containers rather than

plastic wrap where possible. It also leaves our

school grounds much cleaner!

Hi Everyone. Well, here we are at the end of another busy term! Prizes for Book Week will be presented to students later this week due to interruptions in last week’s schedule and the absence of Stage 3 students. Students K-9 will also receive their merit awards for completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2014. The official Premier’s Reading Challenge certificates will be handed out towards the end of next term. Scholastic Book Club has now been distributed to K-6 students and unfortunately a couple of students are waiting for books on back order. If your child is one of those involved, their books will be delivered as soon as they arrive. Many thanks to families who have yet again supported the Library by purchasing books from Scholastic for their children. It would be appreciated by the Library staff if all students could have a look for any overdue or missing books at home during the holidays. We now have quite a few students with outstanding loans who may not borrow until they return these books. Holidays are always an ideal time for a spring clean of bedrooms and in my house it has always uncovered many missing treasures. There are students requesting to borrow some of the titles that are currently out on loan so the prompt return of these would be pleasing. I hope you have a wonderful and safe Spring break. It is a good chance to sit out in the sun and read a book. Mrs Hall
