About the NETTS program

About the role

The National Energy Technician Training Scheme (NETTS) is a collaboration between Programmed and major oil and gas organisations – including Santos, Shell, Woodside, Vermilion, INPEX, BHP Petroleum and Jadestone – to build a skilled workforce for the future.

NETTS is specifically designed as an entry pathway into the energy sector which requires no previous experience. Programmed and your host company provide ongoing support, mentoring and guidance throughout the apprenticeship, and you will also gain a range of life skills, safety knowledge and industry-specific training. Throughout your time in the program, you will gain exposure to multiple sites across the oil and gas industry and supplier contractor facilities

Process Plant Technicians are responsible for the safe and reliable operation of the plant. This includes constant monitoring of the equipment, processes and the people working in and around the plant. They are involved in overseeing all planned and emergent maintenance work and respond to process upsets and plant emergencies. The role of a Process Plant Technician is technically diverse and rewarding.

What are some of the day-to-day tasks and responsibilities?• Participation in daily pre-start team meetings

• Operating and monitoring process systems and equipment associated with oil and gas processing, utilities and safety systems

• Completing general surveillance and routine inspections of equipment to ensure proper operation, checking for malfunctions and arranging maintenance where required

• Analysing samples and readings, observing gauges and instruments on equipment, and recording data

• Interaction with other work groups and contractors through management of the permit to work system

What types of tools and equipment will you use?Process Plant Technicians use a variety of hand tools, such as spanners and wheel keys, to make minor adjustments to equipment and machinery, open and close valves, and prepare and isolate equipment to enable safe access by maintenance crews. Process Plant Technicians also use a number of computer-based applications and reporting systems.

Where will you be working? The first 18 months of the program are based at the ACEPT South Metro TAFE Campus in Munster, WA. During this time, you will also be seconded to external process-based companies across the Perth metro area to gain additional experience in a Process environment and spend time in a Central Control Room (CCR).

You will then transition onto a FIFO (fly-in, fly-out) roster at one of the NETTS host company facilities, located both on- and off-shore WA and interstate. For example, you may spend some time at Santos’s on-shore Devil Creek Gas Plant or you might be working on Jadestone Energy’s Platform off the coast of Karratha. You will still be required to return to TAFE at regular intervals for further training in between your FIFO swings.
