Activities in DECEMBER 2014

NETFISH during the month of December 2014 conducted 207 extension

programmes which comprised of 173 regular awareness classes, 29 street plays, 1

school programme, 1 mass communication and 3 other special programmes. The

number of beneficiaries of regular programmes was 4323 and that of special

programmes was around 1292. Apart from these, a few meetings were organized with

Fisheries officials as well as with stake holder groups in some of the regions to discuss

and solve issues related to hygiene and conservation. Table 1 gives an overall

representation of the different types of extension programmes conducted during the

month. The region wise details are given in the subsequent sections.

Highlights of the month:

Two hands on training programmes on hygienic handling of Dry Fish organized in

association with the State Fisheries, Contai at Junput and Dadanpatrabar

A School programme organized at St. Marys High School, Pallippuram which is

situated near Munambam fishing harbour.

A mass awareness programme for 200 fisherwomen from 20 SHGs in Muduga,

Karwar

Exposure visit for 18 fisherwomen from Karwar to the Dry fish Unit in College of

Fisheries, Mangalore

A three days hands-on training programme for 20 dryfish workers conducted in

model bulk fish drying yard at Umargam.

NETFISH conducted 23 regular extension programmes in the month of

December in West Bengal. Two hands on training programmes on hygienic handling of

Dry Fish had been organized in association with the Asst. Director of Fisheries office,

Contai at Junput and Dadanpatrabar, Purba Medinipur on 22nd and 23rd December’14

respectively. The training programmes aimed at imparting scientific knowledge on

hygienic handling of fishes to the marine fishermen engaged in fish drying process.

Abuse of harmful chemicals in dry fish and its impact for marketing and importance of

hygienic handling of dry fish were highlighted to the trainees. Practical demonstration

were done on hygienic handling of dry fish and use of salt and other food grade

chemicals to eradicate infestation of flies, minimize the fungal infection and increase the

shelf life of the dry fish products. On 17th and 18thDecember, meetings with Engineers

of Kirloskar Oil Engines Ltd. were held at Namkhana landing centre and Deshapran

fishing harbour respectively, regarding survey of customer voice (fishermen, trawler

owners etc.) to understand the fisheries market needs, regulations, innovations, which

are directly or indirectly related to the customer.

Extension programmes in Odisha consisted of 11 programmes at landing sites

and fishermen villages and 11 programmes onboard fishing vessels. In addition to this,

9 street plays were performed at selected regions in Khurda district.

Extension programmes in Andhra Pradesh included 10 regular awareness

classes and 10 street play shows. On 15th December the state coordinator attended a

programme organized by the Action Aid India. The programme was on Fish Quality

Management and for the formation of cooperatives among the fisherwomen

auctioneers. On 22nd December, NETFISH coordinated with OXFAM (India) and

conducted an interstate training programme on sustainable fishing and conservation of

Mangrove vegetation. Members of fishermen societies and NGOs from Tamilnadu and

Andhra Pradesh attended the programme. NETFISH documentaries on Fishery

conservation were shown in the programme and leaflets and posters of NETFISH

related to fishery conservation and sustainable fishing were distributed. On 5th

December, a discussion was held with Shri. Koteswararao, JD Fishereis Visakhapatnam

regarding fishing harbour activities and convening Fishing harbour management

committee meeting to discuss the fund generation for the regular cleaning activities.

MPEDA insulated fish box subsidy scheme along with the approved list of companies

were submitted to him so as to suggest to the boat owners to utilize the scheme. On 9th

December a discussion was arranged with the members of AP Mechanized Boat owners

Association of Visakhapatnam fishing harbour on MPEDA subsidy schemes of Fish hold

and Insulated fish boxes. Two of the boat owners came to utilize the fish hold subsidy

scheme and applications were given to them.

the month of December. The SCO participated in a meeting on Marine Capture fisheries

of Tamilnadu, organised by RC CMFRI, Chennai. He attended the Pondicherry

Aquaculture Expo 2014 and distributed pamphlets, sold charts and books and attended

queries related to cold storage, fish hold subsidy, ornamental fish subsidy.

A total of 14 regular programmes were conducted along southern regions of

Tamil Nadu. On 1st December, the SCO had a meeting with Joint Director and Assistant

Director of Fisheries, Tuticorin and officials of Harbour Engineering division, Tuticorin

with regard to Tube Ice plant work in Tuticorin. On 5th December he went to Deputy

Director’s office Nagercoil with regard to hand over of Tube Ice plant. On 8th December a

discussion was held with fishermen leaders with regard to formation of Harbour

Management Committee in Taruvaikulam landing center. On 26th December, the SCO

participated in the Tsunami exhibition. On 27th December, he participated in the project

inception workshop on Sea Cucumber and Sea Horse organized by CMFRI, Mandapam.

A total of 24 regular programmes and 10 street plays were conducted during the

month of December 2014 in the selected areas of southern parts of Kerala. The street

plays were conducted at Kollam and Alappuzha districts. Meetings with Trawl net, gill

net and purse seine net stakeholders were conducted at Thoppumpady Fisheries

Harbour on 4th and 11th December, in connection with the implementation of fishing

vessel tracking system in the harbour. At Sakthikulangara and Kayamkulam Fisheries

harbours, stakeholder’s meeting were conducted on 2nd and 9th December respectively,

with regard to quality improvement of the seafood products landed in the Harbour.

Along Northern regions of Kerala 17 regular programmes and 2 special

programmes were conducted during December 2014. A mass communication

programme was conducted in Munambam harbour. A school programme was organized

at St. Marys High School, Pallippuram which is situated near Munambam fishing

harbour. The participants in the school programme were provided with NETFISH logo

printed note book and a copy of all NETFISH leaflets. Two short films were also

screened in front of the students. On 4th December, a stakeholder’s meeting was

conducted in Beypore harbour along with CE, NETFISH to discuss NETFISH plan to

conduct a four days programme of Intensive Extension Programmes in the Harbour. The

stake holders accepted the idea of the four days programme although they have doubts

about the formation of a management society in the harbour. We have explained the

advantages of a harbour management committee in the harbour. Discussions were held

with officers concerned at KVK, Njarakkal and at CMFRI regarding the possibilities of

collaborative programmes with NETFISH in fisheries sector.

NETFISH extension programmes in Karnataka and Goa consisted of 17 regular

programmes and 2 special programmes. On 9th and 10th December, after the training

classes, hand gloves were distributed among fishers including fisherwomen at

Mangalore fishing harbour and they cleaned the harbour their own. With the help of

local cleaning contractor drainage near the first auction hall was cleaned thoroughly

and blockage was cleaned off.

On 22nd December, a special dryfish awareness programme was arranged, in

which 200 fisherwomen from more than 20 SHGs participated. Dr. V.N. Nayaka from

District Science Centre inaugurated the function and gave a talk on entrepreneurship

development. NETFISH SCO gave a talk on business opportunities for fisherwomen

SHGs in fisheries. Mrs. Hemalatha, SHG expert suggested the fisherwomen to proactively

involve in the business to get success. Ms. Manjula Shenoy, AD Fisheries explained the

departmental scheme to SHGs. Local fisher leaders and panchayath member presided

over the function. On 29th of the month, an exposure visit was organized for 18

fisherwomen from 4 SHGs in Muduga, Karwar who are interested in dry fish business.

They were taken to the Fish Processing Technology Department of College of Fisheries,

Mangalore where Dr. Shamsunder, Head of the department and In-Charge Dean gave a

lecture on dry fish business. After the lecture they were shown the solar dry unit and

explained it in detail.

On 12th December, a meeting was held with Dr. Shamila B, Director of Fisheries

Goa regarding giving permission for new fishing vessel in Goa state. On 18th, 19th and

20th December, stakeholder’s meetings were arranged at Baithkol and Tadri harbours

and Thenginagundi fish landing centre respectively, in which AD, MPEDA urged the

fishers to avail the fish hold and insulated fish box subsidies.

Total 16 regular programmes on Conservation of marine environment &

Sustainable fishing and dry fish were conducted during December, 2014. A discussion

was held with Mrs. Nanda Suravase, District Development Manager, NABARD. She has

shown interest to work in association with NETFISH for the benefit of fishermen

community. On 11th December, a meeting was held with Dr. R. B. Ghagas, Principle, SRK

College, Vadkun, Dahanu area regarding formation of Sea Club. The SCO also met Dr.

Sambhaji Nalkar, Program Coordinator, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kosbad hill, Dahanu area

on 12.12.2014 in connection with formation of Sea Club.

In Gujarat, NETFISH conducted 19 regular extension training programmes and a

hands-on training programme during the month. From 18th to 20th December, the first

batch for hands-on dryfish training programme was trained for making hygienic dry fish

in the model bulk fish drying yard at Umargam. Around 20 dry fish workers took active

participation. During the training programme the workers were practically trained for

washing of Bombay duck with clean water, use of salt, importance of cleanliness of net

yard, PVC Pipes, maintaining good personal hygiene, Use of Ice, Use of

insecticide/pesticides etc. The workers were also trained to make laminated Bombay

duck after 40% water dried from fish in lamination machine. The last session of the

training covered about the quality of fishes and it’s packing and marketing.

On 2nd of the month DD RO Veraval & SCO visited Veraval Fishing harbour for

monitoring of landing patterns. On 4th of the month DD RO Veraval and SCO visited

CMFRI and met Scientist-In-Charge for getting details of participant for Tilapia Summit

at Vijaywada, suitable site for Mud crab farming, possibility of Cobia and sea bass

farming with collaboration of CMFRI, CIFT, MPEDA and other departments. On 10th of

the month SCO and Secretary of Diu District Fishermen Association met Deputy

Collector of DIU and discussed about NFDB scheme for fishing harbour infrastructure

development. On 22nd of the month sample of Bombay duck dried products were shown

to a dry fish exporter and discussed with him regarding marketing the product. On 23rd

of the month SCO visited various dry fish exporters and shown them dried Bombay duck

prepared under model yard and inquired about quality and market status. On 31st of the

month DD RO Veraval & SCO met Dean of College of Fisheries and Deputy Director of

Fisheries, Veraval to discuss about Aqua Aquaria 2015 and requested them to send

more number of delegates/participant/farmers for the expo.
