Network Availability Program (NAP)

• The Network Availability Program (NAP) enables users to predict the availability and reliability of communication networks.

Network Availability Program (NAP)

• The NAP network availability model utilises an extended Reliability Block Diagram (RBD) methodology that addresses the specific characteristics of network elements and their connections.

Network Availability Program (NAP)

• In addition to predicting network availability, NAP also provides criticality rankings that identify weak spots in the network.

Network Availability Program (NAP)

• NAP provides many time-saving features to allow users to quickly construct the network diagram.

Network Availability Program (NAP)

• These include a parts library facility that allows users to import their parts data in convenient groupings, a network element library facility that allows users to construct common network element diagrams and a fully interactive network diagram construction facility.

Simple Network Management Protocol

• SNMP is the protocol governing network management and the monitoring of network devices and their functions. It is not necessarily limited to TCP/IP networks.

• SNMP uses ASN.1 for encoding of messages. SNMP is not as simple as the name suggests. SNMP is defined in a great number of RFC's and is extended with MIB's (Management Information Base) for new devices and systems.

Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1),

• In telecommunications and computer networking Abstract Syntax Notation one (ASN.1) is a standard and flexible notation that describes data structures for representing, encoding, transmitting, and decoding data.

Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1),

• The language used by the OSI protocols for describing abstract syntax. This language is also used to encode SNMP packets. ASN.1 is defined in ISO documents 8824.2 and 8825.2.

Management Information Base

• MIB is a formal description of a set of network objects that can be managed using the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).

Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1),

• The format of the MIB is defined as part of the SNMP. (All other MIBs are extensions of this basic management information base.) MIB-I refers to the initial MIB definition; MIB-II refers to the current definition. SNMPv2 includes MIB-II and adds some new objects. ...

Request for Comments(RFCs)

• RFC s are the official Internet standard documents, published by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force). They describe all protocols, their usage, their requirements and so on.

Request for Comments(RFCs)

• The document series, begun in 1969, which describes the Internet suite of protocols and related experiments.

Common Management Interface Protocol

• Common Management Interface Protocol (CMIP) is a protocol for network management, it defines the communication between network management applications and management agents.

Page 19: Net Man

Common Management Interface Protocol

• CMIP is based on the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model and is part of the ITU-T X.700 series of recommendations.

Protocol Data Unit

• Protocol Data Unit - A term applied to the user data and control information transmitted by an SNMP manageable device or SNMP management station

Protocol Data Unit

• An SNMP message. There are 5 types of PDU in SNMP v1: Get, GetNext, Set, GetResponse and Trap.

Protocol Data Unit

• Packet Internet Gopher (PING): An ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) echo request to determine whether a device on an IP network is online.

Old Question

1. The Senior Management of the two universities believe that the merged institution may need a new corporate network design.

a) Discuss the likely economic benefits to the institution of investing in a new network configuration. 15 marks

b) Outline the steps involved in developing a new network for Machester new university. 18 marks

Old Question

2. The universities are concerned about the security of their networks and the information they carry (such as confidential staff and student data, financial planning information..etc).

Describe what you believe to be the main threats facing the universities networks and for each threat, propose and justify the controls that you would put in place to enhance network security. 33 marks

Old Question

3. Gamma University and the University of Delta currently use a range of different network infrastructures and protocol standards for their communicaitons. It has been suggested that the merged institutiion adopt a common infrastructure based on internet technology.

In your role as communication systems manager for the institution, write a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor elect, discussing the benefits and problems of using the Internet to support the communicaitons and data transfer of Manchester New University. 33 marks
