NEPTUNE Shore Station

• 2 Shore Stations – each with 10kV (nominal, 0-120%) 100kW Shore Power Supply (SPS)

• Each able to individually power the network with reduced capability

• Shore electrode (anode) will likely be located on shore in ground bed

• West Coast of Vancouver Island– Existing cable stations at Port Alberni & Bamfield– Possible new cable station in Victoria

• Oregon Coast– Existing cable stations at Nedonna Beach, Rockaway,

Pacific City, Bandon

MARS Shore Station

• 1 Shore Station with 10kW (nominal) Shore Power Supply (SPS)

• Located at MBARI facility in Monterey Bay• Shore Electrode (anode) will likely be located underwater

Status

• Purchased a 208VAC:15kVDC, 1.1A power supply from Voltronics, Inc. for lab testing

• Have set up 15kV test lab in basement of APL

• Collected information from several potential vendors of a 100kW, 10kV (nominal) power supply

NEPTUNE Requirements 1

• SPE15 All shore-station equipment including Shore Power Supply, Submarine Line Terminal Equipment, Line Monitoring Equipment, Network Protection Equipment, and Timing distribution Equipment shall be operable off a single uninterruptible power supply

• SPE23 When the Shore Power Supply (SPS) is switched from double-end feeding to single-end feeding or from in-service equipment to redundant equipment in a controlled manner and vice versa, no severely errored seconds shall occur.

• SEF25 All power feeding equipment shall be demonstrated to minimize the risk of failure of System power.

• SEF26 Power feeding equipment at all stations shall be fully duplicated and include a dummy load.

Page 6: NEPTUNE Power System Shore Station Power Supply Preliminary Design Review Tim McGinnis Dec 4-5, 2003

• SEF27 The SPS shall comprise the equipment for converting the Shore Station’s power supply into the form required to power the undersea Segments. The PFE shall be interconnected with the undersea cable to feed power to the undersea Nodes and branching units.

• SEF28 The SPS of each Shore Station shall have sufficient redundancy such that the Segment meets the overall reliability requirements specified in this specification. In case of SPS failure in one Shore Station, the SPS in the other Shore Station shall be capable of automatically feeding the System without operator intervention.

• SEF50 Voltage limit shall be adjustable plus/minus 10%• SEF51 Current limit shall be adjustable down to 1 A.• SEF52 Shore stations shall be capable of coordinating power

outputs in order to achieve system-wide goals, such as minimizing operating costs
