NEO-CLASSICISM is the name given to Western movements in the decorative and visual arts, literature, theatre, music, and architecture that draw inspiration from the "classical" art and culture of Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome which have balance, geometry, muted colors, staged setting, lighting, and calmness.

NEO-CLASSICISMThemes- Important idols of the classical period mostly heroes, stoicism and heroism selfishness, and self sacrifice.

Characteristics- symmetry, clean lines, the emphasis on the subjects faces, controlled emotions, balance, and lighting

Formal qualities- sharp lines, clean cut lines, soften but sharper colors, and planned out space and figures, no brush strokes and

Balanced with the woman having her arms in the left side of the picture, also the dogs and Cupid creates balance of matter.

This pictures two God figures: Diana, the goddess of the hunt, and Cupid, the god of love.

It has geometry in the triangle of the woman’s head to Cupid’s foot to her foot.

Diana’s face has the appearance of a controlled emotion.

All the lines are sharp but soften, example would be the trees the back ground.

THE DEATH OF SOCRATES, 1787JACQUES LOUIS DAVID

This follows the same theme of an important person in Classical history: Socrates.

Light from a natural angle. Soft colors like the muted

greys and reds on the models.

The triangle that is made from Socrates’s finger down to his bed and to the end of the end up to his finger.

This image is balanced because of the evening of the people of both sides of the picture.

Even though it is about the death of a great man, the image has a certain calmness about it like noting is happening sporadically.

The United States Capitol building is an example of neo-classicism.It has the columns and a dome. It is also symmetrical, if you cut it in half it would be the exact reflection of the other half.

NEO-CLASSICISM

This house lives on the same street as me. It has some of the neo-classical elements that I talked about. It has the columns that line the front porch. It also has the triangular shape above the doorway.
