Dear Parents and Friends,

What a first half to the term we had with wonderful weather to complement the settling in process. I wasincredibly impressed to read in their reports how focused and determined our pupils have been over the first sevenweeks of term. I would particularly like to commend all of our new pupils on making a great start to the academicyear, our exceptionally talented 5e class on their early scholarship and to Year 3 who have been the most successfulgroup yet to make the seamless transition up to the Prep School.

Inter-House Competition

These are great fun and always sharpen the resolve of our pupils. We were treated to a rich week of Musicalentertainment over the final week of half term, with our top musicians delivering confident and informativeassembly talks about their own musical passions, before performing brilliantly to pupils and staff in both the Pre-Prep and the Prep Schools. Many congratulations to Molly, Zoey and George for their contributions. TheInter-House Music Competition 2014 took place on the final day of the half term and it was wonderful to hear ouramazing soloists from each year group and all of the houses perform so confidently. I shall never forget the brilliantWellington house song from The Sound of Music. It was like watching the Von Trapp family in front of our veryeyes! Well done to Wellington House for eventually winning the competition.

Progress and Developments

You know how much I love change! Thank you for the excellent feedback that we have received about the newwebsite and I hope that you are enjoying it. Over half term, we were busy improving our infrastructure, primarilythe new Sports Hall floor, which was laid, carefully, layer by layer over the half term fortnight. It has been dryingand hardening during our first week back and, last Monday, Craig Riley finally allowed a pupil to set foot on it. Justa toe, mind! (he was heard to whisper mournfully ‘Noooo, my precious!’) This will be a fantastic improvement toour sports facilities and the children are so excited. My thanks to Craig for all of his work during the break inliaising with the supplier and to the Bursar for overseeing it.

The view around the left hand side of the school is much improved with the removal of an old World War 2 storageshed. This has opened up the area to the west of the school and forced us to have a good clear-out, (hence thesize of this year’s bonfire!) Its footprint has been graveled and we hope to erect a covered gazebo there withbenching for the children to enjoy. If there are any kind souls out there who might be willing to contribute to this, please do let me know!

We also took the opportunity to redecorate half of the boys’ boarding house. The rest is scheduled for Christmasand Easter. My thanks go to the Maintenance staff and to the Bursar for their hard work recently on theserenovations. Loan-free, it is great to have beenable to invest so significantly in our infrastructureand there is more to come.

Partnership, Partnership

Not a spelling mistake, nor a typo! … we have twopartnerships under development at present, aboutwhich I am very excited.

The Share Uganda Marathon morning brokewith rain pummeling the Double Classroomwindows and the wind moaning around the Eastend of the school. During morning assembly, theconditions outside looked more reminiscent of lifein the First World War trenches with the pitchesturning to slush. Mr Riley (ever the optimist) haslong-maintained that we have the best-drainingpitches on the circuit and, true to form, (O ye oflittle faith), Zephirus soon sent the clouds packing.

Planting a tree to commemorate the growing partnership with St Paul’s, Kasso

Although I was not able to run myself, (perforatedeardrum and shrapnel lodged in my thigh fromthe Boer and all that) our pupils excelled. They rana total of over 10 marathons during their normalGames lessons, raising funds towards oureducational partnership with St Paul’s, Kaaso. Welldone to everyone, pupils, parents (and onegovernor) who took part. (My injuries are alreadyfeeling much better thank you!) Well done toElodie Single (our youngest runner, aged 3!) forplanting a beautiful cherry tree in the grounds tocommemorate this growing partnership. Thankyou, Lizzie and Miss Kirby, Dolrick and everyonewho ran.

Partnership 2 Mr Jack Roberts, Chairman of Governors of TheDowns School and Northbourne Primary SchoolFederation visited Northbourne Park last week.Northbourne Park and Northbourne Primary alreadyenjoy symbiosis in so many different ways. Locationaside, we already share a well-established annual KentTest invigilation partnership, both schools haveChristian foundations, both are Forest Schools, bothpromote environmental issues and both schools haverecently extended their curtilage with woodsprovided by Lord Northbourne. Both schools are alsoadapting to the changes in the new NationalCurriculum. My belief is therefore that both schoolscan benefit from closer links with each other and Ihope that at the start of next year, representativesfrom both schools can meet for an informal lunch and a little collective ‘blue sky thinking’. I am interested to seewhat comes of it.

Remember, Remember …Remember, Remember! Bonfire & Fireworks Night was the best I can remember. At 2pm, the firework man shook his tousled locks andinformed me that it was ‘too blowy’. He agreed to relocate them to the sheltered area by the Church. Thank youto Sam Martindale and the boarders for an exquisite lantern procession to the chants of ‘Remember, Remember’.Two past Heads of School, (one from Sussex and one from Madrid!), set the bonfire ablaze. The bonfire / fireworkcombo worked beautifully through the silhouetted trees and against the backdrop of the church. It all seemed somuch safer and more sociable in this natural arena. The fireworks crashed and resounded for over fifteen minutesuntil peace was restored and some ‘contemporary popular music’ beckoned spectators over to the catering area. Many thanks to the Friends for their support of the event on the bar, not to mention the sparkly-sparklies! It wasgreat to see so many old families back enjoying the evening.

We Remember ThemI cannot remember a more poignant and moving Remembrance Service than we had this year with readings fromour pupils in French, beautiful brass accompaniment, the Last Post and Reveille played meticulously by JolyPresland and a Howitzer of a sermon from Fr Roger Marsh. A Head Boy and Head Girl laid the wreath at the churchwar memorials in memory of those from this parish and this school who gave their lives for our freedoms. Thechoir sang quite beautifully and Northbourne Park, in its own very unique way marked this special year withrespectful gravitas. Well done to everyone involved.

We all Remember Them Thank you to all of those who contributed to the Armistice Day Service on Tuesday with poetry readings, musicand prayers.

Children in NeedAs this newsletter goes out today, I am surrounded by mini-superheroes. (Any chance to dress up!) Children inNeed supports children throughout the UK less fortunate than ourselves and the staff enjoy teaching little ClarkKents and um.. other bespectacled light under bushel types. I wish you all a super weekend!

News from the Boarding House

Welcome back to the second half of the Autumn Term! It hasbeen lovely to hear what the children have been doing withyou during their holidays. Now back at school, they havebeen just as busy with different events happening almostdaily since their return! For their first week back we had aday or two to unpack, relax and remember the boardingroutine before, on Wednesday 5th, taking part in a BoardingPumpkin carving competition. In groups of three thechildren worked together to produce a design and then hada fabulous, if slightly slimy time scooping out the insides oftheir pumpkins and creating some truly magnificent facesand designs. It was lovely to see the children workingtogether with such enthusiasm, helped of course by the incentive of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes!!

On Thursday we continued our Halloween theme with a Halloween Disco for the boarders. The children had theopportunity to dress up in Costumes or Disco clothes and had a very enjoyable evening with DJ Riley, glowingballoons and gruesome green cupcakes!

On Friday, the school day was dedicated to promoting the connection between Northbourne Park School and StPaul's School in Uganda. The children dressed creatively in Red, Black and Yellow, the colours of the Ugandan flag,as well as taking part in a Marathon on the Top Pitch. All of the children did a superb job, despite theunpredictable and slightly damp weather, well done!! All this complete, it was time on Friday evening, to relax in-house with electrical items and a movie and to recharge for the busy weekend ahead.

On Saturday, the children took part in regular lessons, along with Outdoor Education and Games. For the boys, this Games' session was particularly exciting as they played alongside their English peers from a range of agegroups against their normal team mates for the exciting and competitive inter-house matches.

On Saturday evening, just in case the children had not had enough fresh air during the day, we all wrapped up

www.northbournepark.com NORTHBOURNE PARK SCHOOL News

News from the Boarding House continued

warm and joined the parents and friends of NPS for the spectacular school Bonfireand fireworks night, complete with tasty hot pork sandwiches and a warming hotchocolate before bed.

On Sunday, we woke the children an hour later than normal and then had pleasantSunday morning breakfast in pyjamas! Following this, we walked down to the churchfor a moving and thought-provoking Remembrance Service, which includedreadings from some of our boarders as well as the respectful laying of the poppywreath by Molly and Victor, our International Heads of School. The children werebeautifully behaved throughout the extended service, singing with conviction andlistening respectfully; a difficult feat when both the hymns and the sermon are inyour second language!

On Sunday afternoon, we decided it was time for a change of scenery and set off toLaser Rush in Whitstable. Laser Rush is a game played in the dark with ‘laser’ lights; the idea being to ‘hit’ otherpeople with your light without being hit by the laser beam yourself- it is a lot of fun! Everyone took part and thechildren and staff had a great time playing for both team points and individual scores, with such friendlycompetitive spirit there was much elation for the winning team who scraped their victory by less than 100 points!

This week has been a little calmer in the boarding house, with a return to our usual Monday in-house activities;Tuesday and Thursday night electrical items and Wednesday boarding clubs. However, this was the first week ofour new variety of Wednesday boarding clubs and so, instead of Lego, Journalism and Physicality club, thechildren created edible Christmas gifts, sparkling wooden snowflakes & made the most of the new Sports Hall flooramongst other things!

On Friday, the children dressed as Superheroes for Children in Need, a national charitable fundraising event, and Ilook forward to including some photographs of their fabulous costumes in the next edition of the newsletter!Thank you to the parents who had prepared costumes for their children in advance; for the other children, with abit of assistance, they created some rather inventive superheroes! It is fair to say that the boarding team are nowexperts at creating superhero capes!!

For the children visiting family or friends this weekend, we wish you a very happy visit. Those remaining inboarding for the weekend will be striking lucky (we hope!) with a visit to the bowling alley in Ashford on Saturday, hopefully followed by shopping and then a day of relaxing, playing and boarding activities on Sunday.

All in all we are having a great time here and making the most of the busy Northbourne lifestyle!

As always, if you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact us [email protected].

Under 9 vs St Edmund’s (Home)

Northbourne Park 1 v St. Edmund’s 1

In another closely fought game we again managed to stick to our game plan and showed more commitment in the tackle. In amatch that could have gone either way it was St. Edmund’s who went into the lead when they pounced on a rebound to score. However, our heads didn’t go down and we showed real character, mounting attack after attack. Deservedly it was CharlieUnitt who drew us level after his shot took a wicked deflection.

It is wonderful to see another improved performance, especially in our desire to ‘get stuck in’. Don’t stop believing!

Metherall Cup Football Tournament

With Mr Thompson out with an illness, Mr Benyon took the reins for our trip to Jr Kings. It was cold and wet with pitches thatwere almost too waterlogged to play on.

The tournament was off to a great start as we won our first match in the pool 1-0 against Lorenden, giving us an earlyconfidence boost. Our team realised how rough the pitch conditions were after a puddle was the only thing that was able totackle the great Jack Shipton in that match.

After the boys all giving 100% in that game, it was a shock to only be given a 2 minute break before the start of our next gameagainst Jr King’s. However, this did not stop us from continuing with the great pace we set in the first game, by going 1-0 upwithin the first 20 seconds of the game. We hammered against the King’s goal time and time again with a couple of free kicksand close corners that were only just scrambled away by the king’s defence. Fatigue was our downfall as we were caught on thecounter attack twice leading to Jr King’s eventually beating us 2-1, an unfair result.

After a 20 minute break to recover we played our final game in the Pool against Kent College. We had lost a bit of focus duringthe break and as a result Kent College managed to snatch a very early 1-0 lead which they held onto for the rest of the game.

In the Pool we came 3rd putting us into the Plate semi-finals where we came up against St Lawrence. Another close 1-0 defeatsaw the NPS boys knocked out of the tournament after a day of results that did not fully reflect each game. A true passion forthe game was shown through shared feelings of disbelief and a few shed tears as our day came to an end. St Lawrence laterwent on to win the Plate and Spring Grove managed to win the Cup for the first time.

Overall the boys produced an outstanding performance in every game which unfortunately was not reflected by the score lines. All the boys deserve recognition for putting in 100% in every minute of every match, but there can only be 1 man of thetournament.

Charles Defour was a constant goal threat as well as constantly running the entire length of the pitch to lend a helping handback in defence. I’m sure that all the NPS Colts will agree that he deserves to be called the man of the tournament.

Man of the tournament – Charles Defour

Under 9 vs Wellesley House (Away)

Wellesley 9 v Northbourne Park 4

Oscar started well by pulling off a spectacular one-handed save but after that, the massive proportions of the Wellesley goal (wecould have had three under-9s standing on each other’s head and still not touched the bar), meant that every time theyattacked they seemed to score a goal. We also managed to give two penalties away through handball which bodes quite wellfor the rugby season. At one stage we pulled the score back to 3 – 2 but went on to lose 9 – 4 with two goals each from MaxSkingle and Charlie Unitt.

Despite the score, the match was surprisingly even and we put pressure on their goal for long periods of the game showingsolid improvement from our first match with Wellesley. Don’t stop believing!

Sports NewsThe old soldiers from Northbourne were smiling down on us today as we enjoyed perfect conditions for football.

Kent College brought a huge squad and tried to play all their boys. As always, they were well organised and provided us withcompetitive opposition. They went two nil up through rather soft goals but Charlie Unitt deservedly pulled one back justbefore half time. The boys had held a good shape in the first half but needed to show more grit and determination if they wereto take control of the match in the second half. This they did and they managed to dominate, drawing level through anotherCharlie Unitt goal.

Our aim now is to try and use our solid shape in possession and provide good passing options.

1st XI Football vs Dover College (Away)

As this was our first eleven a side match in nearly a month – it was very important that we started off positively, whilst doing thebasics right!

After all, ‘cobwebs’ can really affect the outcome of any match!!

Dover College is a tough place to play, as the pitch and goals are senior size and you are really exposed to the elements, especially the wind.

We chose to play the first half into the wind and with the low winter sun in our eyes. We had countless chances to take the leadbut alas ‘lady luck’ was not on our side. This meant that in the 15th minute, Dover went ahead through a decisive goal, whichwas totally against the run of play. Thankfully, Antoine Ceolin equalised just before half time – leaving the match evenly poisedgoing into the second half.

After a stern half time team talk, the boys certainly flew out of the blocks and then never looked back. It is fair to say thatthroughout this half, we ‘peppered’ the Dover goal time after time. This resulted in Jose Orbegozo breaking the deadlock withtwo great individual goals. The opposition never really threatened in the second half and their chances were ‘few and farbetween!’

The final score was 3-1 to NPS.

Well done lads on a superb second half performance – you were all very good. That is how football should be played!

Man of the Match – The whole team

2nd XI Football vs Junior King’s (Away)

A tough transfer window saw us lose two of our key players to the first team, but our spirits were still running high as the wholeteam had big hopes for this game. The NPS boys travelled to Junior King’s seeking revenge for their previous home defeat. Themood on the bus was different to any of the other games that we had played as this time we were more than just determinedto win.

We started the game off stronger and more confident than any of our other games. We had more attacks in the first half of thegame than we had had in all our other games combined. Our forward players had found the confidence to have multiple shotson goal resulting in numerous close chances. The king’s keeper was forced into producing a series of spectacular saves to denythe NPS boys from going ahead in the early minutes of the game.

A lucky deflection off a Jr King’s knee caused us to fall behind right at the end of the first half, but the NPS boys did not let thatdampen their spirits as the second half started with the same high tempo as the first. The Junior King’s team that came on forthe second half felt like a completely different team as the NPS boys felt more under pressure than the first half. The addedpressure resulted in the ball spending more time in and around our penalty area and eventually resulted in another couple ofgoals being conceded. A long range strike saw the final goal go in against us bringing the final score to 4-0 to the King’s boys. The promising performance in the first half of the game could have seen the NPS boys go 4 or 5 goals up, but the abrupt halftime turnaround saw the score go in the opposite direction.

Pierre-Alexandre was one of many that had a great game with a display of skills and ability to read the game that even the firstteam players find challenging. He put in 100% effort throughout the game and was a part of almost every piece of attackingplay in the game. His ability to stay relaxed when put under pressure as well as hold up the play when needed are just two ofthe reasons that Pierre-Alexandre was this week’s man of the match.

Heads up boys, a win is just around the corner.

Man of the match: Pierre-Alexandre Mignon

Colts A Football v Ashford Friars (Home)

This was a fantastic game to watch. It had end to end action, a load of shots, great saves and goals galore.

Ashford have won every game they have played this season so we knew that it would be tough. The boys were asked to focuson keeping the ball and closing down early. We knew that if we let them play, then we’d be in trouble.

Starting well has been a problem this term, but not today. We hit the bar once and their keeper made a great save so it could, and should, have been 2-0 to us after 10 minutes. But Ashford made us pay and they broke to go 1-0 up and then they scoreda penalty just before half-time.

It looked game over when Ashford went 3-0 up right after the break but then Jack Shipton made a great cross and CharlesDefour nodded in to make it game on. Ashford came back and scored to make it 4-1 but then we secured a penalty which Jackthrashed into the back of the net; 4-2.

The next goal was the goal of the season; we won a free-kick about 25 metres out which Jack looped over the wall and itdisappeared into the top left hand corner. 4-3.

To be honest we should have scored an equaliser but as the ball was put perfectly through the Northbourne legs lacked theenergy to make the shot count and it was a cruel blow in the last few seconds when we scored an own goal.

Boys, this was a great game to watch; you are improving with every week.

Final score NPS 3 Ashford 5

Men-of-the-Match : Alexis Plowiecki and Jack Shipton

Colts B Football v Ashford Friars (Home)

This group of boys deserve nothing but praise for the effort they put into every match. They have improved with every gameand are playing some decent football. But this game is about scoring goals and this is proving hard.

Each boy did what was asked of him. The attack of Matthew, Amaury and Charlie linked up well but we played far too much inthe middle of the pitch rather than getting the ball wide and going around their defence; we lack the speed up front to makefast breaks and we kept losing possession.

Felix did a good job in midfield trying to dominate and win back possession and our defence of Nat, Jayson and Leo did asterli9jg job; Ashford really hard to fight hard for their goals. But they kept the pressure on for the whole half-hour and wereable to score 5 times before the final whistle.

Man-of-the-Match : Nat Thompson for some great tackling.

U9 Hockey v St Faith’s (Away)

6 – 1. Each match exposes the girls to greater challenges; we have been adapting our training to experience different surfacesin preparation for this match on a hard surface. The first half started off strong as Grace, Poppy and Emma worked together toget the ball closer to the goal, and with a clear space ahead Poppy dribbled forward and had an open shot on target. Althoughthis lifted our spirits, and gave the girls the motivation to keep attacking, our aim was a little off target in comparison to theshots that Saint Faiths took and scored.

Having re-organised the team at half time and making some substitutions, we returned to the court with a greater focus.Defending with determination and aggression, Mariella unfortunately slipped over a couple of times. However, as a truesportswoman does, she got back up onto her feet and continued to defend with confidence. Well done!

Player of the Match: Mariella Dance for her tenacity.

U11 Hockey v Lorenden (Home)

The game was played in a very friendly fashion, with the teacher from Lorenden asking for it to be more of a coaching sessionrather than a proper match. We also had to stop the game half way through the first half so that Kayley could retrieve a sparepair of goal keeping kickers for the Lorenden goal keeper.

We played well, considering we were missing Olivia Ryeland, who is our central player. The girls were shifted around and had toplay in different positions. They all did very well. It is great to see the less experienced girls getting match practice and making apositive contribution to the team. Estelle, Kayley, Carla and Eleanore have improved so much over the last few weeks. Keep itup!

When we kept our structure, we played well and scored. When we start to hold onto the ball, the play deteriorates and itbecomes messy. Moral of the story….play to the game plan and we will score lots of goals.

U13 Hockey v Wellesley House (Away)

It is always a challenge to move from one type of surface to another in hockey. The senior girls’ last two matches have been onastroturf where the ball travels quickly and easily across the surface. This time they were back on the grass surface at Wellesleyand finding it difficult to make the ball do the work for them. The Wellesley team were fast and aggressive and did not allowour players any time on the ball.

Charlotte and Jess did a stirling job breaking down their attacking moves during the first half and we managed to move the ballup the pitch a few times with one goal scoring opportunity. In the second half, however, Wellesley’s superior athleticism andskill level made it very hard for us to attack and they scored a further 4 goals to make the final score 5 – 0 to Wellesley.

Player of the Match – Charlotte Martin for excellent defensive work as the sweeper.

U11 Hockey v St Edmund’s (Home)

This game was the most exciting game of the season yet. NPS didn’t start too well. Both teams were bunching up andfollowing the ball instead of playing the structured game we have been working on all season. After a few minutes NPS startedto settle down and play to our strengths.

Some of the passes between Olivia, Abigail, Isabella and Sophia was exceptional. They were able to get the ball to the other endof the field in three passes. This left Sophia to contend with two defenders and a goal keeper. She tried her best, but was unableto finish with a goal.

This seemed to be the theme of the match, with NPS getting many break aways and an incredible amount of shots at goal, without being able to slot one of them. But it wasn’t due to lack of effort. Everyone tried their best, but there still needs to bemore aggression in the circle. The other team defended very well. Hopefully NPS learnt a few things from them aboutdefending.

Final score: 0-0. Players of the match: Isabella Savage and Olivia Ryeland for taking control of the game and excellent passes.

U13 Hockey v St Edmund’s (Home)

A little bit of rain didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the U9 Girls today (although there was an initial shock when told theywould be playing on the full sized hockey pitch), but as ever, they accepted the challenge and set to task with a determinedand focused attitude. Our skills have continued to improve week after week, and the girls are beginning to apply what we havebeen concentrating on in training into action during matches. Making quick decisions has been a key component in trainingthis week, looking for space on the field and moving the ball out away from our opponents.

We started off strong. Poppy and Grace were able to move the ball up the right wing towards Mariella, putting pressure on StEdmunds defence a number of occasions. Breaking through the defence, Mariella had a straight run towards goal, but withouther teammates there to receive a wonderful cross into the shooting circle, St Edmunds politely took the ball back down thepitch before securing success in the back of our goal. At the end of the first half St Edmunds were leading 3 – 0.

Unfortunately the unfamiliarity of the pitch size started to become apparent as the game progressed on into the second half.We started to look a little ‘lost’ as the girls became tired and began to lose their structure, which played to our opposition’sadvantage. Manoeuvring the ball around our attackers and past the defence gave St Edmunds a number of strong targets ongoal; but NPS were not going to give up without a fight. Olivia held her ground and continually tried to push the ball out ofplay, with help from Elianna and Ria, but eventually a gap came clear and another goal was scored.

Your faced a huge challenge playing on the sized pitch that you did; but displaying an attitude of not giving up and fighting tillthe very end impressed me today girls. You should all be extremely proud of your performance.

Player of the match: Poppy Rutter for her determined attitude to attack the ball

the grass, the pace of the game was a little slower and for most of the first half the two teams were quite evenly matched.

We defended well, spread the ball out to the wings quite effectively and set up some good attacks. Unfortunately, we are stilltrying to get past opposing players on the stick side, making it easy for the opposition to stop the ball, which means that ourattacks keep breaking down. And this continued to be the pattern for most of the match.

Final score was 4 – 0 to St Edmund’s. Their coach made a point of commenting on how much Northbourne had improved as ateam since the last fixture against them and the girls should be pleased with the progress they are making.

Players of the Match (as voted by the St Edmund’s team) - Maria De Canero, Anna McGovern

U11 Hockey v Junior King’s (Away)

The game started with NPS dominating play by giving very hard passes and entering the attacking circle many times. JKS’defence was very strong and they were able to protect their goal against our rampant attack. They managed to get a breakaway and scored by slipping the ball passed Alexandra. This was a wake up call for NPS who retaliated with vengeance andIsabella equalised within minutes.

NPS went on full attack and Sophia scored another goal and put NPS in the lead. JKS fought back and scored a goal from agood short corner set piece. The tension was building and time was running out. With 2 minutes to go, Isabella decided to takethe fate of the match into her own stick and scored a beautiful goal from the top of the ‘d’.

NPS were the winners and deserved to win this match. Well done to all of you.
