Remembering the Reformation

31st October 1517 –2017

This year, on or around 31st October 2017, it would be appropriate to mark in some way the 500th anniversary of beginning of the Reforma-tion. We now know that the era Martin Luther lived in was enormously complex –socially, po-litically and religiously. We need to recognise he wanted to renew the Church not divide her, 500 years of history since then have seen many tragic consequences. But, as Pope Francis reminded us some month ago, while the past cannot be changed, it is possible to engage in a ‘purification of memory’ and so ‘tell that history differently’. Pope Francis has invited us to re-read our his-tory, acknowledging that ‘our division distanced us from the primordial intuition of God’s people, who naturally yearn to be one’. We now realise that too often in the past ‘we closed in on our-selves out of fear or bias with regard to the faith which others profess with a different accent and language.’

We invite parents who have experienced the death of their baby/pregnancy loss at any stage, together with their family, friends and hospital staff to this service. This service is organised by the Counselling Department and Midwifery staff at UMHL. And people are very welcome to stay after the service for a chat and a cup of tea. To ensure sensitivity towards newly bereaved families, a quiet space will be available at the church for crying babies/young children. The service is an annual event which aims to acknowledge the pregnancies that were lost and the lives of babies who have died through ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal death.
