Director’s NotesCan two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy?
The answer, of course, is no!When Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple opened on Broadway in 1965, change was
in the air. We were still reeling from the JFK assassination only two years earlier. We needed a good laugh because how we perceived love, war, friendship, race, marriage, and divorce was changing. We were also just two years away from theSummer of Love. So, this play belonged smack dab in the middle of it all in the1960s. And, it’s where I decided to keep it as well.
Simon could not look back on that time and the iconic characters he was creatingthen. It was just now—and they were funny and real people to him and the audiences. We, however, do have the benefit of knowing these characters before we see them. For me, it was Jack Klugman and Tony Randall on the iconic 1970s TV sitcom (wherethey strongly resembled my two older brothers squabbling and always will). For oth-ers, it was seeing the classic 1968 film version with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon.Or, the female stage version from the 1980s with Rita Moreno and Sally Struthers.Or, the version they did at your high school when you were a senior. Remember?
Enjoy the show and feel the laughter as we get to know these characters again!— Jonathan Fahn
