NEIGHBORHOOD FOOD SCAVENGER HUNTI know the last few weeks have been incredibly hard for everyone. We’ve never experienced a worldwide pandemic of this magnitude and its incredible impact on every aspect of life around us – big and small. Our family has been following our county’s shelter in place order, so my husband and I have been working from home while caring for our 3 children under the age of 5. We’re not sure when we’ll be able to physically see our friends and family, if people we know and love will become afflicted with COVID19, and scariest of all, if they’ll get the treatment they need.

It’s a lot to wrap my head around but there have also been many moments of joy as we’re all hunkered down at home. One of the few senses of normalcy are our walks around the neighborhood. Unable to go to our nearby playgrounds, we’ve spent more time exploring bugs on the sidewalk and saying hi to our neighbors (don’t worry – from a safe social distance of 6 feet). I’ve also been incredibly grateful for how active and helpful our neighborhood’s listserv has been from grocery reports to efforts to help seniors.

It’s inspired me to do something to contribute to my local community, while also making our daily walks a bit more interesting (no offense to bugs) so I’ve come up with this neighborhood food scavenger hunt. Maybe food is hard to find at grocery stores, but hopefully it won’t be within this little game! If your neighborhood has a group forum, post it there or possibly to Nextdoor.com? The more people who participate, the more fun it’ll be!

Hi parents! Thanks for making neighborhood walks more fun during these strange times we’re going through. First encourage your neighbors to participate by emailing this file to your neighborhood forum or NextDoor. They just need to print out at least 1 of the foods we’ve included and tape it to their front door or a street-facing window. You can then print out 1 (or all 8!) of our scavenger hunt boards and have a delicious walk with your kids. Just remember to keep a safe social distance of 6 feet from anyone you encounter along the way. Have fun!

You can also do this activity at home too by hiding the food pictures throughout your house!

DIRECTIONS FOR PARENTS:

Hi neighbor! Thanks for participating in our Neighborhood Food Scavenger Hunt. To participate, simply print out 1 or 2 of the foods (food pages follow the scavenger hunt boards) and hang it on your door or street-facing window (feel free to print out several and switch them up on different days). When kids spot an ingredient that matches their board, they can mark it off until they collect a row of ingredients or an entire board, depending on how they want to play. We are hoping this is a fun way to bring communities together and make neighborhood walks a bit more fun and educational. Thank you!
