    TYPICAL CHARACTERISTICS

EARLY RANCH HOUSE DISTRICT - LOCATION MAP

hese areas connued the momentum of development that started

with the Cra & Revival and Woodwork districts, extending the

reater city street grid in most areas but modifying the logical path

f the grid when it encounters a barrier such as Bayou St. John or

he Intercoastal Waterway. Street hierarchies are retained as well,

which makes the neighborhoods easily accessible by car. Street

walls are cohesive but not uniform as all buildings are detached but

et back from the street at diering depths.

esidenal area are located exclusively on interior streets, whileommercial areas are located exclusively on major boulevards.

esidences range from smaller to modestly sized single family

tructures of wood frame construcon. They are oen one storey

n height and have protruding porches/parlors, pitched roofs,

pare detailing and trim, driveways and front walks, and smaller

windows, favoring styles ranging from bungalow, modern ranch,

olonial Revival and post-war tract housing. Commercial structures

re larger in scale than the residences, have at roofs, modernist

tylings and oen have generous surface parking lots.

    TYPICAL CHARACTERISTICS

LATE 20th CENTURY CITY DISTRICT - LOCATION MAP

Developed during a period of marked suburban growth, this district

ers many of the same design amenies available in more remote

reas in a slightly denser fabric located closer to the metropolitan

enter. Street grids are laid out appearing to connue the exisng

ity street grid, but are only connected to each other by the

rimary boulevards and not at secondary streets. Streets are wide

    nd typically two-way.

esidenal areas are strictly on interior streets. They are populated

y single family houses favoring lower proles, minimumrnament, and smaller fenestraons typical of Modernist Ranch

r Mid Century Modern housing. Street walls are uniform in the

esidenal areas with detached structures set back from the street

    egularly, although somemes deep.

ommercial areas are exclusively along major boulevards. They

ave lile street wall denion, fronted primarily by large surface

arking lots with structures set back deep in the lot. Commercial

uildings are larger in scale and more monolithic in design.
