We acknowledge the Brayakoloong, the particular Kurnai tribe who inhabited and cared for the place known as Neerim District in which this newsletter is produced, published and distributed. Doug Jones

Louise Ford

Doug Jones works with steel and his MIG welder, angle grinder and scroll making machine as his “power tools”, to create tables, bird baths, arches, garden seats and benches. With an eye for design, purpose and symmetry, the photos give an idea of his expertise. Doug, who has a long term experience with steel and has been “working seriously” for about 4 years, displays some of his works at the Warragul Arts Market and the Rokeby Market. These items are for sale and orders can be arranged. Doug has a folder of previous work.

Lately, he has been creating tables with tops of slices of bluestone which gives an idea of the indestructibility

Marilyn has delivered another basketful of knitted and crocheted poppies for our November Remembrance Day anniversary. She has added purple poppies to celebrate and acknowledge the contribution made by animals in times of conflict.

The poppy panels will be placed at the Neerim South memorials – around the cenotaph and on the Tarago Views Aged Care wall which faces the war memorial plaque. Panels are also on display in the Algie Hall auditorium.

Police ReportSergeant Murray Brown

A couple of incidents have occurred around the district over the last month. There was an assault in the main street of Neerim South and an eighty four year old male is to appear at court in relation to that matter and several traffic offences. As the warmer weather arrives so do people camping in our beautiful parks particularly around

the Noojee area. We had a theft at The Poplars Camping Ground on Loch Valley Road and a twenty year old male will be appearing at court for that matter. There was also an assault at the Toorongo Falls Camping Ground. A male has been interviewed in relation to the incident and enquiries are continuing. We have a lovely area which attracts many visitors. Unfortunately not everyone wants to play by the rules and so if anyone observes a person who is acting unlawfully please contact 000 so we can sort the matter out. Matters can also be reported via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

If police attendance is required please call 000. Members of the community can follow police issues via the Eyewatch – Baw Baw Police Service Area Facebook Page.

planning, submissions and sheer physical work involved to achieve these local enticements. We are so fortunate. How many times do we hear “you are so lucky…”? With the upgrade of the Aged Care facility about to commence, this unit will be extending their range of

What you can do for your community ...

Louise Ford

Community Service comes in many forms.

Many volunteers do agreed hours at “our” Op. Shop, are involved with Lion’s Projects, help with the Algie Hall , maintain sporting facilities, collect the Aldi donations for Food Relief, do the Meals – on – Wheels, attend the CWA, and more. But there is a largely invisible group working within the Neerim District Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, itself a beneficiary of our “community working together”. This small band work in the Aged Care Unit. They may be there on a daily, or weekly basis, which surely constitutes more than “volunteering”. They are a different breed altogether. Working closely alongside the staff, they may help at meal times, push wheel chairs to where needed, participate/organise card games, carpet bowls, cooking the regular BBQ. Music and craft

sessions bring a brightness and busy-ness for all, even if physical involvement is not easy. One person I have spoken to, has been going to “her family” for 14 years! Meg and her husband Allan had a history of community involvement before coming to Neerim South and now, the Hospital is their main social commitment. “We feel we are there for them” There seems to be a long term involvement by this group. Realistically, they themselves will become older. And the unit needs people to step up now to be building on this core of expertise, in assisting these residents. Residents who were part of our working community. They may have been involved in those projects which form such a vital part of the fabric of our district; working to establish this hospital, the swimming pool, kindergarten, sporting facilities, the library, the Bower and others. These are testament to our citizens working together. Newcomers, attracted to these facilities and moving into our area, may be unaware of the colossal fundraising efforts,

support and activities, both for staff and the people they care for. The volunteers will be embedded in this development.

Perhaps there are people who will join this group. There will be NO expectation to meet Meg’s years of involvement!!

Short Story CompetitionThe second place in our Short Story Competition for Grades 5 and 6 pupils from Neerim South came from Brody Middling.

The trouble began when my Mum, my sister and I were locked out of our own house. That was when we were leaving to go to school. I came outside and locked the door, but my Mum forgot to get the keys, although my Mum had an old card that she didn’t use anymore and we could use that in the crack of the door.Unfortunately it didn’t work. Suddenly I remembered I had a paperclip in my bag, so I got it out and bent it a little. I tried bending it different ways but again it didn’t work. I also went around the house to check if any windows were unlocked but of course, none were. We had nothing else to do so my Mum called the real estate agent because they would have a spare key.

Once she got here, the woman unlocked our house and left. We got the key and walked to the car.

Wait a minute, I got the wrong key…

An Evening at Hotel Sorrento

When the West Gippsland Arts Centre redevelopment delay stopped them from being able to do the full staging of HIT Productions’ wonderful new presentation of Hannie Rayson's classic Australian play Hotel Sorrento, they just couldn't let it slip by. With the help of the

great people who are working on making the Algie Hall in Neerim South a theatre and entertainment destination, we snagged a wonderful opportunity to host the first production in the transformed Algie Hall.

Attended by over 60 people, the cast made the most of their final performance of their national tour and where greeted with warm Neerim hospitality.

The Dog in Sheep’s Clothing

A true, local farming fairy tale

Mary Hughes

In early August a ewe, heavy with unborn lamb, lay down in a Nayook paddock to give birth to triplets. Three babies were too many to feed so, as happens, the weakest was left to die. Fortunately the farmer saw the sad situation, picked up the newborn bundle of wet fleece, and thought. I know what, he decided, my new neighbours might like the idea of giving you a life, but I’ll warn them not to be too optimistic. (By the way,

these prospective foster parent had zero livestock experience.) When he handed over the lamb, with some fresh cow colostrum too, his neighbours took on the task with caution and e n t h u s i a s m . The baby was THEIR baby. The lamb was put in disposable nappies, fed regularly, kept indoors and warm. It survived. Walter the lamb was on the way. He had a name, a caring family and a future. When next the farmer saw the growing lamb he checked it over. Under

that baby tail he found the vital proof that Walter should have a female name. Walter’s family then changed the name to

Molly. Molly’s foster brother was Baxter, a boisterous white terrier, almost a terror. Baxter and Molly ran, played and slept together. They raced around the lawns and the farm. Molly continued to thrive, believing that she too was a dog. She learned

to beg in the kitchen! By 8 weeks of age Molly was more than a handful. She was still in nappies, wearing a harness so that she could be caught for nappy changes. She even had a onesie to wear to keep those poo catchers in place. HOWEVER, her true sheep nature began to take over and her human family had a big black, woolly nightmare. Bright idea! Finding a children’s animal petting farm was the solution.

Molly is now in her element, living with other lambs in a cosy shed. Her friendliness and charm are already making her THE STAR ATTRACTION with visitors. Her 8 weeks as a human baby then a dog are over. Molly has become what nature originally intended - for her to be a SHEEP!

Ask the Trainer

Lisa McFadyen

One of the most important things you can teach a dog is RECALL (how to come back to you). In fact a solid RECALL can save your dog’s life! Something I get my students to think about is the last time they recalled their dog. I ask them what they called him away from and what happened when the dog came back to them. I get all sorts of interesting answers, from eating cat food and playing with a ball to chasing cows. All things that are super fun for a dog. When I ask them what they did when the dog finally came back to them, they tell me all sorts of things from giving the dog a pat to giving the dog a smack.

I get how frustrating it is when your dog won’t come to you; especially when in a hurry to go somewhere. But try and see things from the dog’s point of view. When we start doing this, we are half way there! A dog will do something because there is something in it for him. So if the previous times the dog came back to you and you didn’t give him something worth coming back to you for, the next time he is going to give you the paw. But if every time you give him something worthwhile, you are adding value to his RECALL history. If you think of the RECALL as having a bank account, you are adding money to the “RECALL piggy bank”.

So if you want to have savings in your dog’s RECALL piggy bank, make sure you are always depositing whenever you get that opportunity, not deducting.Happy training!

Time lapsewindy. News is to hand of two brothers named Litaze, who left their farms at Neerim for Klondike some months ago. One of the two had to walk a distance of 80 miles to post the letter, which is dated from Stewart River. So far they had not been successful, and state that there is nothing to justify the extravagant reports of rich finds. Exorbitant prices are charged for provisions and numbers of men were leaving in disgust. Reports of rich discoveries in widely separated localities were frequently circulated, but

on investigation prove false and misleading.

The Tarago Sawmill, which was idle for some time, commenced operations again this week under new management.

Harvesting operations are now completed. Notwithstanding that much damage was done by caterpillars some excellent returns were obtained.

The following story appeared in the Warragul Guardian (Warragul, Vic. : 1895 - 1900)

NEERIM SOUTH.

On Saturday great damage was done to the standing crops, many of them being levelled to the ground. Already reports are in of the havoc made in fruit gardens. Under some trees the young fruit can be picked up in handfuls. It is feared the fruit yield will be far short of the average. The weather has cleared, but is still

Wheat, which hitherto has been rarely grown in the district, yielded as much as 36 bushels per acre, and the sample is excellent. Oat crops averaged from 30 to 40 bushels per acre. Maize sewn for early winter feed for cattle promises well. Some crops are already from 6ft to 8ft high.

This is the best year for potatoes which farmers have experienced for some time. The sample is excellent, and the yields average from six to ten tons per acre.

Tuesday Pie Nights are popular, but not the only reason for gathering. Coordinator Gerry Eversteyn organises and invites speakers for regular meetings: the local Police Officer or local GP, Paramedics, CFA, older community members with local or military history to impart and occasionally members. There is always a tale to be told. Men’s Sheds are special for the support they can provide. Older men in particular can suffer

isolation, depression and anxiety for many reasons: health or injury issues, retirement, relocation, retrenchment, loss of a spouse through death or separation or ongoing relationship difficulties or changes. These are not men-only issues, but there are limited opportunities for men to share together. The “Shed” concept offers a social outing, an accepting place to meet, to talk and work, together. Mateship is the basis for its ongoing success; but it also needs a working space Our Men’s Shed doesn’t

own a shed. Members meet in the Algie Hall, but can’t have shared workshop activities. Despite efforts, largely led by Chair Paul Ford, to negotiate acquisition of a suitable long-term space, including purchase of the former CFA building, the search goes on. The Neerim District Men’s Shed members want a place of their own. They need a building or rooms able to accommodate equipment, machinery and work benches as well as the activities of the men: a safe place, without constraints

of landlords or co-users. It needs to be their own Shed! They need land: enough to build a shed on. They already have access to funds and resources for buildings. If you can help or have an idea, or want to support them, please contact the Men’s Shed Coordinator, Gerry Eversteyn, on 5628 4397 or email: [email protected].

The Community usually provides when asked – and the Neerim District Men’s Shed are asking.

NEERIM SOUTH FIRE BRIGADE 199 MAIN NEERIM ROAD NEERIM SOUTH We have listed some information for this summer. Making informed decisions is vital to your safety during a fire. Now is the best time to understand your fire risk and get prepared. This week talk to your family, friends and neighbours about the fire risk where you live and make plans for what you’ll do on hot, dry and windy days. Make sure you know where to check the Fire Danger Ratings (Vic Emergency website and app). Over summer, you’ll need to check the ratings daily to understand the fire risk in your area. Remember, as ratings increase, so does your risk of fire. It’s up to all of us to stay informed by using more than one source of information, understanding the three levels of warnings, what they mean and what you should do: SEVERE: For a severe forecast, the safest option is to leave early. EXTREME: For a extreme forecast, the safest option is to leave early. CODE RED: For a code red day forecast, the safest option is to leave the night before or early in the morning. Just a reminder if you need to burn-off around your property could you please register your burn-off on 1800 668 511, this will reduce the chance of the CFA having to attend a burn-off you have under control. Further to the above, Fire Restrictions are likely to be enforced on 12th November, permits will only be issued with extenuating circumstances and for these contact District 9 on 1800 663 234.

Neerim District Australia Day “Citizen of the Year” Nominations for 2019

On Australia Day 2018 we held our Community Barbeque at the Neerim South Skate Park. The evening was a huge success, with over 200 people attending over the course of the evening. The Lion’s Club provided their barbeque and chefs, and with salads and sweets we

provided an ample spread for all. Baw Baw Shire Council supported this activity with a community grant. A highlight of the evening was the announcement of Neerim District’s Community Citizen of the Year. The award went to Jim Rochford and was presented by Paul Ford, Chair of the Neerim District Community House & Men’s Shed Committee. In presenting the award, Paul spoke of Jim’s long and valuable involvement in so many of

the district’s activities and organisations. There are many local residents whose contributions to the community qualify them to be recognised. This year we again invite the community to have their say in who should be “Neerim District Community Citizen of the Year” for 2019. Nomination forms and selection criteria guidelines are available by contacting us at [email protected] or by phoning the Secretary on 0418 384 135. Nominations close on Friday 14th December.

Getting ahead with debt

Last issue I talked about how to handle debts when faced with a period of reduced or no income, who to turn to and where to get help. This month it’s appropriate to talk about how to help prevent this situation arising, and I’m not saying, “Have no debt!”. Most families have some consumer debt, especially in the early years, before the children have left home, or when they are still being funded through school or being helped to get established. Usually there are home mortgages, car loans and credit cards. Sometimes there are other personal loans and sometimes also investment loans, which I’ll come back to. When we’re young, our biggest asset is the ability to earn, so the first insurance absolutely should be income protection. If you can’t work, then you’ll still have an income, or be able to pay someone to do your work. Either way this will avert any disaster. I know this from experience. The home mortgage is usually the largest debt we will have, followed by the

car loans, so it is important to protect these. Mortgage and loan insurance protects the lender, not the borrower, which is why income protection is critical. Credit cards can also be insured for the repayments if the borrower is injured or ill and unable to work, and the balance if the holder dies. The card issuer sells the policies and the premiums are added to the bill on a monthly basis. At least it’s visible and the borrower is always reminded of it. Whether any borrower takes up the insurance is a matter for them to decide. If they work in a seasonal or cyclical industry, or if there is a serious risk of illness then taking out this insurance should be a given. There other ways in which to protect yourself. Most importantly, don’t over borrow. For some mortgages and personal loans, it is possible to make extra payments, to get ahead of the repayment schedule. I would recommend this to everyone with a personal loan, mortgage, hire purchase or lease contract, and especially anyone with an investment loan that requires specific

payments on a regular basis. There are a couple of advantages in doing this. If things are tight or if repayments can’t be met at sometime in the future, when extra repayments have been made, then the loan won’t fall into arrears immediately. Three monthly repayments made ahead of schedule can give protection similar to taking out an insurance policy. As well, these repayments will reduce the amount owing and hence interest charged. Interest saved is the same as earning the same amount after tax – so it can be worth nearly twice as much. Credit cards should be used sparingly, and in the ideal world, paid off every month. That way there’s no interest; so if you can’t work then there’s only minimal debt. Credit cards are the cause of the greatest number of consumer bankruptcies in Australia. They have punitively high interest rates and are designed to make money for the banks – not the borrower. A credit card loan of $1,000 with no further borrowings and repaid only at the minimum amount turns into an 11 year loan with high interest

being charged on high interest already charged on high interest… You get the picture. Investment loans have little or no consumer protection legislated to protect the borrower; so be careful, when signing up for a loan, that the borrower doesn’t unnecessarily get you to sign a statement that the loan is primarily for business. On the other hand, without that statement it can be difficult to justify claiming any interest as a tax deduction. As always, if you have difficulty in meeting payments or regular payments contact the lender. They actually want to help you get out of trouble in these cases, and may be able to offer repayment holidays, or extend the term of the loan. So, to protect your financial future when you have any debt, get insurance or get ahead in the repayments. And remember, loans must be repaid, so don’t borrow more than you can safely cover with assets or income. And you have your income insured, too, don’t you?

your prospective clients can’t find you due to poor signage; or they pick up the phone and call but the staff answering the phone didn’t know the ad went in and don’t know anything about the product or service you are promoting! Likewise you can advertise all you like, but if the ad is in a media which your prospective customers don’t read, watch or listen to, then you have wasted your money! If you don’t get results from the ad then you should look first at the product or service you are promoting. Is it really what your customers want/need? Is the ad placed in the right media? Then look at the ad. Did it create the interest you wanted

So you want to be in Business?Advertising as a tool

Lynne Roder-Wells

So we now have a well structured ad, nicely laid out, good picture or illustration which appropriately represents your product or service, eye catching headline and strong selling copy. So what’s left? The answer is a call to action and communicating who or what you are and where can you be found? The call to action is effectively “Ring now” or “Stocks Limited” or “Sale ends this week”. In other

words: Act now or miss out! In regards to who are you and where can you be found, don’t make the mistake of making your business name the headline! Your product or service is what you are selling, not your business. The last part of the ad, at the bottom, is your business name, address and contact details unless you have urged them to “ring now!” in which case this should be followed by your phone number and then your business name, and then your address. Advertising is a useful tool, but it is only one of many tools used to market your business. It’s pointless to spend money on advertising if

by its sense of urgency, its portrayal of the benefits of your product/service? Was the selling message strong enough? A successful ad must be interesting enough to get itself read, It must be persuasive and communicate with utmost clarity, instantly getting the message across. Remember everyone listens to the same radio station WII FM !!!!! What’s In It For Me????? Tell your customers what’s in it for them and you are halfway there! Create the need, the ability and the desire in your customers to act.

Happy marketing. Email me if you need help [email protected].

CWA Celebrates Peru Kay Cousins

Neerim District CWA has once again been kept busy over the last few weeks. Our ladies catered for a surprise 60th birthday party, where a luncheon was provided to a group of 50 guests. It was a very successful day. Neerim District CWA are quite happy to cater for events such as this. Some of our members helped out at the Garden Expo at Lardner Park on the 13th and 14th of October. Great weather ensured lots of people coming in, out of the warm weather, to enjoy a Devonshire Tea put on by the Latrobe Group of CWA. Our Car Boot Sale was held at Rokeby Recreation Reserve on Sunday, October 21 and a report on this will be provided in the next Neerim Star. Also in October, our Annual

General Meeting was held. Neerim District CWA are once again involved in the Remembrance Day Service which will be held at the Neerim South Cenotaph at 11 am. We will be providing light refreshments for the public in the park rotunda opposite the cenotaph. We will run a couple of BBQs at IGA in Neerim South later in November, on Saturday 17th, and then on Saturday December 1st. If you would like to know more about the Neerim District CWA branch, you can come along to our meetings and be made most welcome; or contact our President Glenys Randle on 56281091 or Secretary Kay Cousins on 5628 1560. We meet at the St John’s Cooperating Church Meeting Room behind the Op Shop in Neerim South at 10.15 am for a 10.30 start. Information about our CWA is always available at the Op Shop.

November SudokuEasy Hard

One day, three men were hiking along when they came across a raging river. They needed to get to the other side, but had no idea how to do it. The first man prayed to his God and said: “Please God, give me the strength to cross this river”. Poof! God gave him big arms and strong legs and he was able to swim across the river in about two hours.Seeing this, the second man prayed to his God and said: “Please God, give me the strength and ability to cross this river”. God gave him a rowboat and he was able to row across the river in about three hours. The third man had seen how this worked out for the other two, so he also played to his God. “Please God, give me the strength, ability and intelligence to cross this river.” God turned him into a woman. He looked at the map, then walked across the bridge.

Scammer Alert

ACCC warns of dangerous new ways scammers are targeting innocent Aussies.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has warned Australians to beware of scammers trying to access their personal details, computer and bank accounts through new and dangerous methods. Scammers are upping their game in an attempt to access data and money, with many people being caught out by people impersonating well-known businesses and even the police to gain access to computers to steal money and banking information. The ACCC’s Scamwatch website has seen a dramatic spike in what are known as remote access scams. So far this year more than 8,000 reports have been recorded, with losses costing Australians $4.4 million. The new scams have been described as “concerning” and have already surpassed those for the whole of 2017. “And sadly it is older Australians that are losing

the most money,” ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said.Scammers are impersonating well-known companies including Telstra, NBN and Microsoft, while some are even pretending to be the police. These scammers are spinning credible and believable stories about why they need to access your computer using software such as TeamViewers. “The scammers are becoming more sophisticated,” Rickard warns. “The old trick scammers used was to call people and say there was a virus on their computer that needed fixing but, in a new twist, scammers are now telling people they need their help to catch hackers. Scammers claim they are tracking scammers and hackers but telling the consumer their computer has been compromised and being used to send scam messages. They then ask for the victim’s help, claiming they are able to use the computer and online banking to trap the scammer. Hackers pretend to deposit money into their victim’s account, although what they’re really doing is shuffling money from one account to another, fooling

people into believing money has been deposited. The scammers then transfer the money into their own bank account. “Unfortunately there are many stories from people who give a scammer access to their computer and are then conned into giving access to online banking,” Rickard added. “Some are also tricked into providing iTunes gift card numbers over the phone to these scammers.” The ACCC also explained that scammers become threatening if their victims doubt what they are doing, telling them they could jeopardise the investigation by refusing to help and even face legal action. It can be particularly scary for older members of society.

“It’s vital that people remember they should never, ever, give an unsolicited caller access to your computer, and under no circumstances offer your personal, credit card or online account details over the phone,” Rickard said. “If you receive a phone call out of the blue about your computer and remote access is requested, it’s a scam 100 per cent of the time. Just hang up.”
