1.0 INTRODUCTION: Request

Based on the interactions and requests from Asikam Presby Primary School, VMF had a

Needs Assessment done on Wednesday, 7th July, 2021 with the help of TECHAiDE a

technology social enterprise.

We met the Head of the institution, who granted access to the facility. Details of the assessment are summarised below.

2.0 VANMOORHOUSE FOUNDATION: Brief Profile

Van Moorhouse Foundation which was founded in January 2018 to offer free assistance and help to underserved Communities, Hospitals, Schools, and Orphanages in Ghana. We are a non-profit charity organisation registered with the Charity Commission in Ghana, UK and in the process to file for 501c3 in the US. We provide educational materials, clothing, toys, children's reading books for these institutions free of charge from donations received from the UK, US and Ghana. Our Trustee's and volunteers give their time and efforts to ensure that those less privileged receive the help they need. None of the Trustee's and volunteers take any remuneration and offer their services entirely free.

Our first event was held on 21st July 2018 by a donation to the Oncology department of the Korle-Bu teaching hospital in Accra. Since then, numerous projects have been undertaken including free Health Screening exercise for 500 inhabitants at Nzulezu in the Western Region of Ghana, Providing educational materials t several school in rural areas, Production and free distribution of Hand Sanitizers and Nose Masks in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, the Team has been able to set up a reading club at Abura Dunkwa cluster of schools in the central region as well as creating employment through capacity building for youth in underserved communities. All these projects were executed by our 4 designated departements.ie: Health, Education, Development and Social Donations departments with assistance from donors and individuals.

3.0 CHALLENGES: ICT Lab Problems

Many schools in deprived communities in Ghana are denied access to computer studies

throughout their primary and secondary education. This is due to underfunding which leaves

the schools without the necessary learning tools which contribute a lot to their upbringing.

During our Team’s visit to the Asikam School, we identified an empty classroom designated for a computer laboratory but had no computers. The ICT teacher only presents an illustration of tech resources in an abstract format during ICT teaching and assimilation. Our interactions with the students showed just a little theoretical knowledge about imaginary computers they had just read about in books but never seen. Giving access to over 600 pupils who attend the primary school through Technology is a beacon of hope for the low earning income families. Our team, touched by this educational experience, decided to solicit for funds to renovate and equip a computer laboratory for the school.

and the process is slow, we cannot use them for future EDULab installation. They are almost

non-functional.

half-day training directly after installation at no cost to you. In order to maximize the

installed TECHAiDE Bundle & hardware. Our goal is to increase your students' learning, drive

more students into your school, and take the headache out of ICT.

6.1 Proposed layout of the EDULab Premium

Asikam Presby Primary school needs aid Renovating Asikam Primary School building is in an extremely poor state of repair. As part of VMF adopting this school we would like to renovate the building gradually including reconstructing demolished gable ends, repairing broken parts of flooring, plastering, constructing, roofing, ceilings, electricals and installing windows and a door with burglar proof, painting, and shutters for all the classroom block and providing more adequate educational resources.

State of school building Constructing Toilet/Sanitary Facility The goal of this project is to provide hygienic environment for these school children. The old, dilapidated latrine used by the children exposed them to diseases due to open defecation. This project will also help the young girls not to miss school at that time of the month. The new school toilet will help improve sanitation conditions and prevent the spread of diseases.

Providing Digital skill lab The current pandemic has caused a forceful closure of schools all over the world and this has caused a break in learning activities. However, it is worse for the children of Asikam partly due to absence of digital skill learning centre and other technological materials to ensure the continuity of education. The provision of this digital skill centre with the necessary technology will aid in the closure of the leaning process gap and enable equitable access for all in terms of education whiles improving capacity building.
