OverviewEveryaspectofourworldischangingrapidly–theglobalpoliticalsituation,theeconomy,socialvalues,technologyareallmuchdifferenttodaythantheyweretenortwentyyearsago.
Astheworldchanges,educationmustalsochange,inordertoinsurethatstudentsarefullypreparedfortheworldinwhichthey’regoingtobelivingandworkingtomorrowandfarintothefuture.Employers,however,havefoundthatmanycriticalskillsandcapabilitiesthatareessentialtosuccessintheworkforcetodayhavenotbeenincludedinthecurriculum.
Toaddressthisimportantissue,theNebraskaDepartmentofEducationconvenedtheNebraskaSummitonCareerReadinessonNovember3and4,2009inLincoln,todevelopadetaileddefini-tionof“careerreadiness,”andexaminewhatspecificallywouldberequiredtocomposeacomprehen-sivecurriculumtosupportthelearningneedsofouryouth.
The75participantsintheSummitincludedabroadrangeofNebraskaleadersfrommajoremploy-ers,educatorsfromsecondaryandpost-secondaryinstitutions,individualsfromtheDepartmentsofLaborandEducation,andwellasrepresentativesofnon-profitorganizationsandmembersoftheNebraskaStateBoardofEducation.Theyworkedtogetherinanactiveprocessofexploration,de-sign,creativity,anddialogtoworkthroughasetofcomplexissuestoarriveataseriesofdefinitions,proposals,andrecommendations.

ShiftsThisactivityfocusedonidentifyingspecificshiftsthatneedtotakeplaceby2015invariousorgani-zations,processes,andstakeholdergroupstosupporttheshifttothecareerreadinessmodel.Work-inginteams,theparticipantsaddressedthefollowingquestions:
By 2015, what roles will selected groups play in the system through which all Nebraskans become career ready?
What specific changes in each group are needed in order for all Nebraskans to be career ready?
Thegroupsexaminedincluded:business,highschools,post-secondaryeducation,stategovernment,professionaldevelopment,teachingcolleges,theNebraskaDepartmentofLabor,andtheNebraskaDepartmentofEducation.
Eachteamproduceda“shiftpaper”thatshowedkeychangestakingplacefromthe“currentway(2009)”tothe“newway(2015),”andindicatedspecificallywhatpolicies,processes,structures,pro-grams,etc.wouldenablechangetohappen.

Shifts in Business
Inthefuturebusinesswillpayforthetimenecessarytomentorstudents.Businesseswillreachoutandcomeintotheclassroom,andwillalsoopentheirdoorstomentorteachersinthebusinessworld.
Businesseswillhaveteachersandstudentsonsiteforworkplace-basedlearning,andwewouldlikebusinessestogiveapreferenceforNebraska-raisedemployeesinhiring.Thismightbedrivenbyataxcredit.
Studentprojectteamsforbusinessprojectswillbeenabledbygrantsortaxcredits.Businessesshouldofferincentivestostudentsorschoolstopursueinnovativeprojectsintheirindustries.Businesscanofferincentivestopushfurtherinnovationincareereducation.
