Foreword Role of the Crime Commission

The Nebraska Commission on Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice (Crime Commission) was created in 1967 by an executive order of the Governor and was established as an agency of state government in 1969. The Commission was originally formed to conduct studies, develop plans, and administer federal funds for the improvement of Nebraska's criminal justice system. Over the years, the Commission's role has evolved and currently it serves as an "umbrella" agency for the administration of several criminal justice programs.

With the exception of a few statutory appointees, Commission members are appointed by the Governor to six year terms. The Governor designates one member as chairperson. The Commission meets on a quarterly basis, providing a representative group for consideration and disposition of criminal justice issues.

Criminal Justice Directory

The Commission publishes a Nebraska Criminal Justice Directory in an attempt to provide a comprehensive listing of key criminal justice personnel throughout the state. Hopefully, the directory will promote the exchange of information among members of the criminal justice system.

The directory is divided into these eight sections : (1) Law Enforcement, (2) Corrections, (3) Judicial System, (4) Education, (5) State Senators1U.S. Senate and Congress, (6) Victim 's Programs, (7) Criminal Justice Organizations, and (8) Criminal Justice Websites. A detailed list of what each section contains can be found in the Table of Contents.

If funding permits, the directory will be updated and published on an annual basis. Although an effort has been made to carefully check all the names and agencies listed in the directory, some mistakes may have occurred. If you notice any corrections or additions that need to be made to the directory, please complete the correction sheet provided in the directory and return it to the Crime Commission.

All Nebraska law enforcement officers must be certified by the Law Enforcement Training Center within one year from date of hire. In addition, all reserve officers must complete training within one year of appointment, and all Nebraska sheriffs must complete 20 hours of in-service training each year. Employees of county or municipal jails who work in excess of 200 hours annually and are responsible for the security and supervision of the inmates shall - - - - receive80-hours - of i-nltial trainingand 18 hours- ofin-service training each year. All law enforcement officers who are promoted are required to complete supervision and/or management training within one year of promotion.

Nebraska is unique among the fifty states - it has the only unicameral, or one-house legislative body. Nebraska is divided into forty-nine legislative districts. Each district elects a state senator to a four year term on a nonpartisan basis.

The following pages list each state senator's office and home address and the district he or she represents. The Legislature meets each year beginning in January: 90 days during odd numbered years and 60 days during even numbered years.
