Discussion has been raging in the NE1 offices lately about what constitutes the perfect summer’s day accompaniment. Firmly entrenched in one camp we have fans of the humble ice cream, frequent poppers to the parlours across the city and possessing the belief that life is greatly improved with the addition of a flake. Then there are those who look towards Newcastle’s watering holes at the first sight of sunshine, choosing to occupy a beer garden with a glass of something cold and refreshing. With over 45 venues signed up to take part in Newcastle Restaurant Week, this summer’s event is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever. The NE1 initiative runs from Monday 5th until Sunday 11th August and will see chefs across the city serving up culinary delights at discounted prices. Starting my own business has been the craziest ride of my life! Since being made redundant in January 2012, I decided it was high time to do something I truly loved and so I began what was then my little business The Great British Cupcakery…and look where we are now! I can’t believe it’s

An Inventory Of Al-Mutanabbi Street. On 5th March 2007 a car bomb was exploded on Al-Mutanabbi Street in Baghdad, killing 30 people and wounding more than 100. Al-Mutanabbi Street had been the heart and soul of the Baghdad literary and intellectual community. This exhibition represents over 200 handmade books made by artists and poets in response to the bombing. Fifty of these books from the collection will be

Sandra Blow. A pioneer of the British post-war abstract movement Sandra Blow’s work started in the radical atmosphere of the pre-Arte Povera movement under the influence of Alberto Burri, and she remained loyal to the language of abstraction throughout her career. Without two of the North East’s finest exports I doubt I’d be a comedian.Viz opened my eyes and my brain to a hitherto unrevealed world of filth and surrealism that had me religiously ordering and collecting it from my local village shop, much to the confusion, horror and judgement of the old dear who ran the place. Secondly, or it might have been before, I don’t know, but it doesn’t matter, I remember watching telly one night and this odd bloke in a white suit came on and said, “Watch me Vic Reeves on my Big Night Out on Channel Four”. Something in my brain clicked and I was there from the start. From there my love of comedy began, obviously I’d seen lots of comedy before, but these two things felt like I’d found them, or they’d found me. Viz and Vic Reeves were my gateway drugs into a new dimension of Richard Prior, Lenny Bruce, Bill Hicks, Monty Python etc etc etc.I few years ago I did a gig in a club in London that Vic and Bob were hosting, it was utterly surreal and exciting to be there and as I put the mic back in the stand after my set, I turned round to see them dressed as Mulligan and O’Hair, farting about like a couple of idiots. SPACE2… It’s vital for the future that young people across the city are inspired and given as much assistance as possible to help them find meaningful work. Set up by NE1, managed by the YMCA Newcastle and Solar Learning, Space2…aims to tackle the problem of youth unemployment by encouraging young people, between the ages of 13 and 18, to learn new skills and gain experience that will increase their chances of gaining employment when they leave school. At Space2…, in the heart of the city on Newgate Street, a programme of training, advice, placements, mentoring and apprenticeships has been established involving a series of city centre businesses. These include Lloyds Bank, Greggs, John Lewis, Sintons, Ward Hadaway and Wilmott Dixon Construction, and the list is growing all the time. One of the core components of the programme is the World of Work scheme which is an introduction to a range careers and professions and includes help with financial management. One of the first to deliver a session is Tom Caulker, owner of World Headquarters night club, who will be leading a workshop on Monday 29th July about how he set up his own business. “I want to inspire the audience and instill in them the belief that they too, can set up their own thing if they really focus and work hard,” he says. Space2…, its ipads, Xboxes, films and café, as well as the work programme, are open to all young people between the ages of 13-18 and are free.
