Cranmore & Bretton Woods team up to offer the Sun-N-Snow Season Pass

NORTH CONWAY, NH – Two New Hampshire family-friendly ski areas, Bretton Woods at the Omni Mount Washington Resort and Cranmore Mountain Resort, have teamed up to offer a new pass option this winter. The “Sun-N-Snow” Season Pass offers skiers and riders a great value, with the pass being valid mid-week non-holiday periods all winter long.

The pass costs just $499 when purchased by November 30th and is valid at both mountains, all lifts, Sunday-Friday with holiday blackout dates: 12/26/2012 - 1/1/2013 ; 1/19/2013 - 1/20/2013; 2/16/2013 - 2/23/2013. Passes can be purchased online or in person at either resort starting Sat., Sept. 1. Prices will increase as of Dec. 1.

Both mountains are located within 30 miles of each other in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Cranmore, with 57 trails and glades, is located in the heart of North Conway Village, NH. Bretton Woods, with 102 trails and glades, is located on Route 302

north of Crawford Notch in the shadow of Mount Washington, the tallest peak in the East. Together they offer snowsports fans coming to Mount Wash-ington Valley and northern New Hampshire the best variety of terrain available on a single season pass.

“We are really pleased to offer great variety and value in a Sunday through Friday pass by teaming up with our friends above the Notch, Bretton Woods,” stated Cranmore General Manager and President, Ben Wilcox.

“We feel the new Sun n’ Snow pass represents the best ski experience the White Mountains has to offer with the greatest value. Midweek means no lift lines, first tracks on a powder day, and long lunches on a sunny deck.” stated Bretton Woods Director of Ski Operations, Chris Ellms.

Both resorts are reporting significant investment in new trails, lifts and snowmaking for the coming winter. Cranmore is replacing its East Double Chair

Newswith a triple chairlift. This chairlift will increase the uphill lift capacity and add 300 feet of vertical to the southern slopes of the resort. This new lift represents a $1 mil. investment.

60 new snow guns are being added to Cranmore’s arsenal, furthering the resort’s dedication to the best in snowmaking and grooming, key attributes in low snow years such as the past winter. Cranmore is now up to 300 high efficiency snow guns which will increase snowmaking power while also reducing energy consumption.

The Soaring Eagle Zipline, installed in sum-mer 2012, will also operate all winter long joining Cranmore’s popular tubing park, mountain coaster and giant swing rides and attractions.

Bretton Woods announced the addition of lift service to the Mount Stickney area. The resort will welcome adventurers and families with a step back to a traditional New England skiing experience. The Mount Stickney expansion, whose last addition included 30 acres of gladed tree skiing, continues with the addition of a T-Bar surface lift and warming cabin.

The new 2,000-foot Doppelmayr T-Bar will serve the Mount Stickney Glades. The gladed terrain is being

expanded and enhanced to open up the steep drop offs and cliff area. For the less adventurous, many of the glades are being fashioned so they will be skiable even in lean snow years and cater to all abilities and age groups. Bretton Woods has also invested in 50 new low energy tower guns for one of their core trails, Range View. This upgrade to the current snowmaking system will help to facilitate opening more terrain early in the season.

28th Annual Apple Harvest Day comes to Dover Oct. 6th

The 28th Annual Apple Harvest Day will take place in Dover on Saturday, October 6 from 9:00am to 4:00pm. The Seacoast’s premier fall festival will feature over 300 vendors, six entertainment stages, fabulous food and amusements for the whole family. The event, organized by the Greater Do-ver Chamber of Commerce and underwritten by Federal Savings Bank, brings

over 25,000 people to downtown Dover every year on the first Saturday in October.

Festival attendees can expect all of the events and activities from past years’ including the WOKQ Apple Pie Judging Contest, Apple Harvest Day 5K Road Race and Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, and three new venues this year; The Orchard Street Stage, Todd’s Touch Auto Alley and McConnell Center Arts Pavilion. The Bernson Legal, PLLC Orchard Street Stage, which will be located next

to The Dover Brickhouse, is sure to be the hot new music venue of the festival featuring perfor-mances by The Mallett Brothers, Whiskey Kill Duo, Eli Autry and other local musicians. "I think

the Orchard Street Stage is going to be a great addition to the festival," commented

Chris Serrecchia, Co-Owner of The Dover Brickhouse. "We have a great

band lineup planned that will attract people to Orchard Street and expand Apple Harvest Day."

The McConnell Center Arts Pavilion will transform Dover’s community center into a local arts haven with artists, crafters and musicians filling the lawn outside of the Center. Although the McConnell Center lies outside of the traditional Apple Harvest Day boundaries, many festival attendees park at the McConnell Center Lot and are encouraged to stop at the Arts Pavilion on their way to other festivities on Central Avenue and Henry Law Park. The Todd’s Touch Auto Alley will take place on First Street and will feature a collection of super modified sports and muscle cars, in addition to a monster truck on display. Festival-goers will be allowed to take a

close look at all of the vehicles and pose for pictures with the monster

truck. For the fourth straight year, the 5K Road Race will

kick-off Apple Harvest Day. The race begins at 8:30am

and will start and finish on River Street.

The USTAF certified course winds through historic downtown

Dover and is suitable for beginner runners and walkers, as well

as advanced racers. Registration for the

5K Road Race is now open and can be done by visiting the Apple Harvest Day

The Gala appleGALA has become one of the most widely grown

apples in the world since it was introduced from New Zealand in 1934. It has a conical shape and red-orange coloring with yellow striping, and

it often turns a deeper color late in the season and in

storage. Gala is a sweet, crunchy apple, and juicy. Its flavor has

hints of pear. Gala is well suited for

both fresh eating and cooking, and it is ready for harvest in many orchards now. Gala derives its genetic heritage from Cox’s Orange Pippin, an English apple dating back to 1825, and both Red and Golden Delicious. One of its offspring is Jazz, a managed variety introduced in 2000. Managed, or club, varieties, are now the norm for new apples developed around the world. Growers can only plant these varieties if they are licensed to do so. The goal of managing varieties this way is to maintain quality and limit production, and return more revenue to the people and programs that develop them. While this can prevent a popular apple from being overplanted, it means that consumers may not find certain new varieties in their local orchard. HERE’S A RECIPE for Galas or other New

England apples adapted from the kitchen of Roy Palmquist. For a healthier version, substitute plain yogurt for the sour cream (try the Greek kind for extra creaminess), or applesauce for all or part of the butter.Sour Cream Apple Cake6 T butter2 eggs1 c all-purpose flour

1 c whole wheat flour1/4 t salt1 c sour cream3/4 c sugar1 t vanilla1 t baking powder1 t baking soda2-3 apples like Gala or Honeycrisp, cored/sliced thinTopping1/2 c walnuts or pecans, chopped1/3 c sugar1 t cinnamonIcing3/4 c confectioners sugar3/4 t almond extractmilkPreheat over to 350°F.

Cream together butter and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla. Stir in dry ingredients and sour cream, and mix well. Spoon half of the batter in a greased 9”x13” pan.

Layer apple slices on top and sprinkle with half of topping mixture. Cover with remaining better, apples, and topping. Bake for 45-50 minutes, until a cake tester or toothpick comes out clean.

Mix together confectioners’ sugar and almond extract. Add just enough milk to make it moist enough to drizzle off a spoon. While cake is still warm, drizzle with icing.

Slice Basics 2The clubface being open to the swing path

may be the technical cause of all slices but it's the outside-to-inside swing that makes the slice so complicated and so difficult to cure. An outside-to-inside swing will in most circumstances encourage you to hit the ball with an open clubface producing a slice. Yes, you could hit a pull or a pull hook, but this occurs far less frequently than the slice. For most golfers both the open clubface and the outside-to-inside swing work together to cause the slice. If you cure just one factor you will most likely still slice! This is what makes the slice so difficult to cure. If all slices were hit with a straight swing path (just with the clubface open), the slice would be a relatively easy problem to cure.

The slice causes more frustration and confusion than any other problem in golf. If you follow your natural tendencies when trying to correct your slice you.ll actually slice more. When a slice begins golfers often try to correct it by hitting with a more outside-to-inside swing aiming the ball more to the left and letting it slice back to the right. Once you have an outside-to-inside swing the slice

Golf Golfbecomes very complicated. If you do square up the clubface (to the swing path), you'll wind up with a pull. So golfers quickly learn to keep the club open a little. Then if you do manage a straight swing (with the clubface open) the ball still slices and may wind up even further to the right than before. In effect your better swings can make your slice seem worse.

The only effective way to cure the slice is a two step procedure. You must work on only one factor at a time. If you try to work on both the open club-face and the outside-to-inside swing at the same time you will become confused, overwhelmed and doom yourself to failure. It's almost like you can't cure the slice by trying to cure the slice. It's too complicated. This frustration results in some golfers going through endless cycles of trying to cure their slice. Others resign themselves to living with the slice forever. Some even quit playing.

Slice Basics 3In mathematical terms the slice is like an equa-

tion with two variables. From your days in algebra class you may remember an equation with two variables is much more difficult to

solve than an equation with only one variable. You have to begin by isolating and solving for the first variable. The outside-to-inside swing is the first variable. The open clubface (open to the swing path) is the other variable.

Golf

You must start by working on curing your outside-to-inside swing first - for two reasons. First, you can measure your progress when working on the outside-to-inside swing by looking at your divots or scuff marks on the practice mat. Unless you have a swing analyzer, the only way to judge the position of the clubface at impact is by watch-ing the ball's flight.

Most golfers find watching the ball's flight confusing because a number of different swing faults can produce the same type of ball flight. Few golfers can effectively tell what they are doing wrong just by looking at the flight of the ball. Second, we have found most golfers have difficulty understanding the differences between "open to the swingpath" and "open to the target." Unless you understand what "open" really means it's very difficult to correct it. Most golfers will find that after straightening their swing path, curing the open clubface is much easier.

In addition, when you change your swing path you will also effect the angle of the clubface. Most golfers square the club to the target at address. If

they have an outside-to-inside swing even though the clubface is square to the target it's pointing to the right side of the swing path. Now, if that same golfer straightens his swingpath (still with the clubface square to the target) his slice will be gone. Straightening his swing path in effect aligned his swing path with his clubface.

If you square your swing path, the swing path line and the target line become the same. This alignment is the ultimate goal of a good golf swing.

Slice Basics 4If you are fortunate enough to be working

with a professional, follow the sequence your pro recommends. If you are working by yourself, try working on the outside-to-inside swing first. Look-ing at the direction of your divots or scuff marks on a practice mat will give you a measurable way to gauge your progress.

If the practice mat doesn.t show the scuff marks, try sprinkling some sand or powder on the mat. Check the direction your divots or marks are angled. The left angled divot is the telltale result of the outside-to-inside swing.

To better understand your swing faults, have someone video tape your swing from at least two

angles. You will understand your swing faults much better when you can actually see them. This tape can provide a base to judge your future improvements.

No matter how smart or experienced you are, only make one change at a time to your swing. If you try to make more than one you will become confused as to the true effects of each change. At that point you will be wasting your time and it is likely you will make your swing worse.

Expect YOUR slice to get bigger for a while as a normal step in the corrective process. It.s normal for the slice to get bigger while you are working on it. For example, when you straighten your swing path your clubface may still be open. Now, your slice instead of starting to the left, starts straight and then winds up further right than before. That's a normal part of the process. It doesn't mean the shots you are hitting are worse.

The better the swing, in this case, doesn.t mean the better the shot. Be patient, after you have straightened your swing path, you can work on squaring the clubface and watching the flight of the ball. This booklet will guide you through the whole process step by step.
