After graduating in illustration from the Ecole Emile Cohl and studying anthropology at the Lumière University in Lyon, Claude Barras returned to Switzerland to specialise in computer graphics at Ecal (école cantonale d’art de Lausanne). He has directed several short films, including Banquise (Ice Flow), presented at Premiers Plans in 2007 and at the Cannes Film Festival, and Le Génie de la boîte de raviolis, which has won awards at numerous festivals around the world. In 2013, he began directing his first feature film Ma vie de Courgette (My Life as a Courgette), adapted from the novel Autobiography of a Courgette by Gilles Paris. Co-written by Céline Sciamma, the film was selected for the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes in 2016 and was a major public success when it was released. Ma Vie de Courgette has been screened in about sixty countries including Russia, China and Japan. Nominated for the Golden Globes and the Oscars, Claude Barras has won numerous awards, including two Césars for best animated film and best adaptation, two Cristals at Annecy and a European

TRIBUTES AND RETROSPECTIVES
Raymond Depardon - Claudine NougaretIn attendance
A tribute to the cinematographic work of Raymond Depardon. Born into the rural world he so often films, fascinated by an Africa he constantly travels through, his documentaries, reports and fictions highlight the voices of those that often go unheard, reveal the invisible portrait of his country and his time.

From our CorrespondentAt a time when fake news is running out of control, when whistle-blowers are constantly threatened, when the press is undergoing a major crisis, it seems relevant to question, through 20 or so films, the figure and function of the journalist in wartime, on crime or in political investigations.

Nora Twomey and Tomm MooreIn the presence of Tomm MooreIn partnership with Mécène et Loire
Irish animator Tomm Moore will be at the Festival Premiers Plans to present the work he has done with animator Nora Twomey, both co-founders of production company Cartoon Saloon in 1999. After graduating from the University of Ballyfermot in Dublin, they were able to gain international recognition after the release of The Secret of Kells in 2009, nominated for the Oscar for best animated film. The production was spread between several countries since the drawings were animated by the Kecskemét studio in Hungary, the colouring and 3D effects were provided by Digital- Graphics and Walking the Dog in Belgium, and the compositing was done by Spirit in France. The Secret of Kells is largely inspired by Irish history and folklore. Tomm Moore continued his career with Song of the Sea in 2014, where Nora Twomey also contributed to the animation. This also has is source in age-old tales since the film focuses on a selkie, a wonderful being which can change into a seal. Song of the Sea also received an Oscar nomination, the second for a production by the Irish animator. He then produced, again with Cartoon Saloon, The Breadwinner in 2017, directed by Nora Twomey, which was also nominated
for the Oscars in 2018. The Festival Premiers Plans is delighted to present these three magical tales along with Tomm Moore.

ldBéla TarrIn attendance
In February 2011, Béla Tarr presented The Turin Horse at the Berlinale. It would, he said, be his last film: the Hungarian filmmaker was 56 years old at the time. Described as a radical filmmaker, making metaphysical films in a coaly black and white, Béla Tarr is best known for his work after 1988’s Damnation. However, he began his career at a very young age, at just 22, in 1977, with Family Nest, in a style which is very different from the one he is usually associated with. Produced by Béla Balázs, highlighting the social realism style of the “Budapest School”, this first film features a large family sharing the same apartment. It is in this same documentary vein, examining the dashed hopes of communism, that he directed the colour film The Outsider in 1981, one of his least known films, which follows András, a young alcoholic violinist who self-destructs by rejecting the social conventions of Hungary in the 1980s. In 1984, with his last film in colour, the intense, claustrophobic chamber drama Autumn Almanac, Béla Tarr distanced himself from social realism and created a film with an aesthetic which was different both from his previous films and
also from those that followed. After writing his first four films alone, he met László Krasznahorkai, a novelist who provided him with the necessary material to make his most successful films, Damnation, Satan’s Tango in 1994 (7 ½ hours!), The Werckmeister Harmonies in 2000 and finally The Turin Horse, his last film. It is with these films that he achieved international recognition and influence from filmmakers as diverse as Gus Van Sant and László Nemes. Béla Tarr will come to the Festival Premiers Plans to show us, for the very first time, restored versions of his early work. An opportunity to discover or rediscover an absolutely singular and multi-facetted body of work, from the anger of the young filmmaker to the virtuosity of the master. 4K restoration by Arbelos in collaboration with the Hungarian Filmlab under the supervision of Béla Tarr. Retrospective in association with Carlotta Films, which will release five of its titles in theatres from 12 February 2020.With thanks to Luxbox.
