Friday, April 21st is NDSU Bison/NDSCS Wildcat Day!Wear NDSU Bison or NDSCS Wildcat Gear on Friday to show your support for NDSU and NDSCS. Target Audience: Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians
Doug Gietzen graduated from the NDSU College of Pharmacy in 1969. After college, Doug began professional practice in Minot, North Dakota, working at White Drug and B&B Pharmacy until finally starting with Trinity Hospital Pharmacy in 1974 where he would faithfully devote the remainder of his professional career. He became the Director of Pharmacy at Trinity in 1998. During his tenure at Trinity Doug was active in multiple hospital committees where he would constantly advocate for pharmacy services including the incorporation of resources and processes that would enhance patient care. Amongst the many initiatives Doug helped implement, several have had sustaining positive impact including his strong support of decentralized pharmacy services, the incorporation of automated dispensing machines,
and early adoption of the tech-in training program. One of the characteristics that made Doug successful was his ability to collaborate with other people and departments. Doug could talk with anyone and everyone new Doug. He eventually retired from pharmacy practice in 2007.
Doug has been a strong advocate of pharmacy services throughout his entire career as evidenced by his active membership with NDPhA and lifelong service to the District 2 Pharmacy Association. He also selflessly served as the committee chair and co-chair of the annual pharmacy convention on multiple occasions and was always willing to donate time or resources to ensure success.
Amongst Doug’s many positive attributes, you could always be certain about his loyalty to employer, co-workers and staff. Doug is well known for his sense of humor (perhaps off-color at times), big smile, and genuine laugh. But he wasn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves and get to work when needed. Doug often said that, “just because you have a job doesn’t mean you should stop looking for work,” and he did his best to instill that philosophy into his children and co-workers.
Doug is married to his wife Debbie of 49 years. They have 4 children (Shauna, Nichole, Dana, and Derek) and 7 grandchildren. They are members of St. John’s Catholic Church in Minot. He was active in the Hockey Boosters and the Blue Line Club. In his spare time he likes to cook gourmet meals and dabble in his garden. He also likes to go bowling and golfing. He’s not afraid to get his hands dirty in the workshop and he’s a skilled butcher having carved many roasts and steaks at the Gietzen family farm. He also enjoys fishing and spotting deer through a scope while observing others trudging through the hostile North Dakota elements.
Eileen began her technician career at B&B Pharmacy in downtown Minot, completing the PATISM program through NDSCS in 1999. Prior to beginning her technician career, she worked for Seiferts, Casual Corner and Osco. In her years as a technician, she has worked for B&B Drug, B&B NW Pharmacy and Keycare Pharmacy.
Eileen is a past NAPT board member as member at large and past recipient of NAPT Diamond Award. She is an active member at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Minot, participating in LWML and quilting group. She is on the city council in Sawyer and helps her husband at knife and gun shows for Wally’s World of Knives. She enjoys gardening and spending time with her grandkids.

Colleagues,
Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your president this last year!Attendance at NDPhA and NAPAT Board meetings, the annual convention, Legislative Day at the
ND Capitol, legislature committee meetings, discussions with Mike, and time spent in the NDPhA office, have all contributed towards an increased confidence and appreciation of our profession.
Difficult decisions affecting our patients and our livelihood are at the forefront of healthcare discussions! Within the last few months, I have seen patients, pharmacists, and employers stand up in support of the profession of pharmacy in North Dakota. Through their leadership, we achieved GREAT success in the passage of two important legislative bills.
Passage of SB 2301 helps to break down barriers in the specialty drug market and allows pharmacies to better serve ND patients.
Passage of SB 2258 limits the power of PBMs to control your practice! Every day, I realize the need for pharmacists to become more involved within their communities,
with their patients, with other health care colleagues, and with their governmental representatives. I am thankful for the opportunity to associate with men and women that are striving to keep our
profession as one of the most trusted roles within the healthcare community. All of you know the work that goes into a day-in-the-life of a pharmacist or technician, whether it be in a community, long term care, or hospital practice. Believe me when I say that there are forces diligently working to diminish the importance of your practice.
I realize that you split your valuable time between family, work, and community. Again, I ask you to consider the importance of being a role model for your technicians and pharmacist employees through your involvement in our Association and supporting the issues that will affect the future of pharmacy!
Wishing you a successful and blessed future.

Welcome fellow colleagues to the 132nd Annual North Dakota Pharmacy Convention. What an exciting convention this will be. Hopefully you will be reconnecting with friends across the state to see what new things have transpired since last you met. The convention’s educational sessions this year is filled with a plethora of information on a multitude of topics. We hope that you find the convention to be full of learning opportunities and yes, you can still have a little bit of fun along the way.
Over the past year NDSHP has continued to support Health-System pharmacy practice in our state through our monthly education and networking sessions. Furthermore, we have been actively involved with state legislation on the various pharmacy related bills. This past fall we held another successful Reverse Expo and Health-System summit. We brought in vendors from across the United States and a speaker from the American Society of Health System Pharmacists. We also hosted a Residency Program Design Conference in which we had 79 attendees, representing 23 programs from 4 states. Watch for updates on our upcoming Fall, 2017 Reverse Expo and Health-System Summit. And on another exciting note, we have recently been notified of our re-affiliation status
with the American Society of Health System Pharmacists for another 5 years.
The NDSHP Board of Directors is very grateful for those of you that have generously donated your time, talent and efforts throughout this past year. You have served on behalf of NDSHP to provide continuing education, host networking sessions, recruit and retain members and have kept us connected through our newsletter, website and social media. We hope you have found it to be a worthwhile experience and will continue your contributions as we work to advance pharmacy practice throughout the state.
We look forward to another exciting year for NDSHP. If there ever was an ideal time to get involved now is the time. There is something for everyone at NDSHP. We would love to have you join.
Check out our website at www.ndshp.org for more information on upcoming events. Also, follow us on facebook.
Have a great convention!
