Greetings everyone! Nursing Course Union (NCU) and Canadian Nursing Students' Association (CNSA) are proud to present to you our first newsletter! We hope that this will provide our information about our upcoming events and programming in a more organized and more visual kind of way, we also hope this reduces the amount of emails nursing students receive from NCU and CNSA. We welcome any suggestions! Special thanks to Abby and Cecilia for their hard-work in putting this newsletter together! I hope that with midterms ending soon, everyone will be able to come out and join us in the events we have planned. Learning and personal development extends outside the classroom, and what a better way to develop those than to come out and spend time with the rest of your nursing student community? Enrich your undergraduate experience by being involved with you extracurricular student

activities. Last month, 20 Ryerson nursing students attended the CNSA Regional Conference with me and we participated in workshops by Medicins Sans Frontiers and a University of Toronto Simulation Lab. All the students who attended came back with new experiences and positive reviews of the conference. So come out and find out what great things NCU and CNSA has to offer you! Best of luck to everyone for the month of November and I'm looking forward to meeting you all! Vikky Leung, CNSA OD

Hi Everyone I hope this Nursing Shift Report keeps you informed and updated on what we have planned out for the months ahead. We have many events lined up. We are committed to working hard to make this a worthwhile year! Let us know if you have any suggestions, concerns, or questions. Looking forward to hearing from you all.

An affiliate student group is comprised of members who share an interest in an academic-related project or an academic program-based issue. Student groups and programs may have external affiliations such as professional societies. Affiliate groups do not have the same privileges as Course Unions, however they do provide students with additional resources and opportunities to bring external perspectives and issues to their students.

As your Nursing student organizations, the NCU and CNSA will be working collaboratively in executing and promoting their events throughout the academic year. Contact us to learn more about these upcoming events and promotions,

NOT SCRUBS

Brenda Hoang and Vikky Leung are two nursing students from

Ryerson University who wanted to bring in a new design of sweater

to change it up from previous traditional designs in their first year of

nursing, but most of all, they wanted to do something meaningful

and fundraise money to donate to charitable causes such as Haiti

Earthquake Relief Fund and the Japanese Tsunami-Earthquake

relief fund through Red Cross.

The stethoscope design is our signature sweater. The stethoscope, to us, is symbolic to the profession of nursing as

we listen to the hearts of our patients. We listen to their hearts for pathophysiological signs, but we also listen to their

hearts through gaining insight of their lived experiences. ♥

The last day to PAY for your order is November 14 from 1000h-1300h at the CNSA Office (POD 454), don't forget to

Professional Development Discussion Panel

In this workshop you will have access to RNs working in fields such as ER, pediatrics, and public health.

You will be able to ask them questions about how they got their jobs and what they have done in their

undergraduate programs to make them the best candidate at the job interview.

This will be beneficial to third and fourth years because you will gain insight as to what strengths you

might want to highlight in the interview process and also for those graduating soon, you might get some

insight on the current job market that is related to the field of nursing you are most interested in!

The date is tentatively set for November 28 @ 1800h and the place is TBA, so stay tune to take part in

this amazing conversation.

Do you want to learn more about opportunities working with Aboriginal Peoples in the Area of Nutrition and Health? Two Ryerson Alumni will be our guests at lunch and learn on Wednesday, November 16, 2011. Elisa Levi is a consulting dietitian working in aboriginal health and Kirsten Bedard is a consultant in the area of nutrition and physical health. Elisa will discuss career opportunities and key Aboriginal Nutrition areas across Canada. Kristen will talk about her experience in working with Urban Aboriginal Male population and share her experience about the need to have a client focused approach. Date: November 16th, 2011 Time: 3 - 4pm Location: KHW 362 Contact: [email protected]
