FOREWARD The Church High School is renowned all over the north-east of England for the excellence of its examination results and this year’s grades were no exception. Once again, the girls achieved excellent A Level and GCSE results. At A Level, 43% of all grades were A* or A and nearly three quarters of all grades were A* to B. At GCSE, 56% of all grades were A* or A and 83% of grades were A* to B, with a quarter of the entire year group achieving nine or more A* and A grades. Our girls and staff can feel extremely proud of this superb achievement. There was much publicity this year about the reduction in the number of A and A* grades being awarded and the difficulties students could face in securing a place at University. We are delighted to say that all our Upper Sixth who had planned to start University this September achieved a place at a university of their choice, with girls going on to study a wide range of courses including Architecture, Mathematics, Medicine, Law, Dentistry, Zoology and Film and TV Production to name but a few.

Our Awards Ceremony at The Sage, Gateshead, provided a splendid platform to celebrate all these achievements, but not just applaud in the academic field. We had lots to shout about in Music, Dance, Drama and Sport too. If you are still living locally, you will no doubt have read and seen many of our special activities in the regional newspapers and on the television. Our media coverage continues to be phenomenal, but could only feature so prevalently because of the innovative, diverse opportunities given to the pupils by the staff who work here.

We had no new staff joining us this term, but we are saying a fond farewell to Mrs Evans who has taught Geography and Religious Studies in the Senior School for many years as well as offering language support to pupils in the Junior School. We wish Mrs Evans a very happy and well-earned

retirement. Also leaving at the end of the summer term was Dorothy Chipchase, however, I am happy to say that she is not entirely gone….she will be back to keep us on the straight and narrow as regards our Health & Safety procedures!

The School’s global network of Alumnae continues to grow and the Newsletter reaches readers all around the world — to be exact, a staggering 3,500 people in 45 countries. The centre spread shows just how far flung our members are and how your news travels! In this edition, alumnae working and living in places as varied as Hong

Kong, Germany, France, the Canary Islands, Australia and United States share their stories and successes with us.

Closer to home, our Annual Dinner at Firenze was a most enjoyable event and it was good to see so many of our regular, familiar faces mingling with the new Alumnae. This summer we plan to bring the meal back into School with the help of our superb catering team and give everyone the chance to wander round, re-living memories whilst also experiencing our up-to-the minute Art Exhibition. The date is set for Tuesday 25th June, 7.00 for 7.30pm. Please pop it into your diaries and lets try to get as many of us together as possible.

Finally, you will all be aware that postal charges have risen astronomically so we shall be making every effort to keep post to a minimum. Wherever possible, we should like to email information to Alumnae so please do make sure that we have a current email address for you on our database. The School website is also worth visiting regularly as it contains updated news items and forth coming events. Our Facebook and Twitter sites provide another way for you to keep in touch with school life and we always welcome your contributions.

We hope you enjoy this edition of the Alumnae newsletter. If you would like to feature in a future edition, contact us at - [email protected]

NEWSWS

Old Girl, Sue Thexton (Class of 1978) joined Chair of Governors, Peter Buchan and Headmistress, Joy Gatenby, as our Keynote Speaker at this year’s Awards Ceremony at The Sage, Gateshead in September . Sue spoke about her time as an ‘average’ pupil at Church High and the fact that she didn’t know what she wanted to do when she left school. That hasn’t prevented Sue from leading a very exciting, rewarding career. Starting out after her degree in Graphic Design with Letraset, she then moved on to Adobe as Regional Director for northern Europe, to Macromedia as their Vice President in Europe, as managing Director for ITN, then set up her own company in 2007, Thexto-Warlock Ltd, and is now currently flying all over the world in her present role as senior Vice-President of the American company, Brightcove.

With her husband and daughter safely at home in London, it was great that Sue could find the time in her diary to spend the evening with us. It was also lovely to see her parents, John and Dorothy again. They still live locally and were able to join us for the celebrations and see their daughter deliver a most stimulating address.

So what happened to Sue to help with her post-school decisions? Church High happened!

‘’It gave me so much that is above and beyond academic success. I gained a ‘’je ne sais quoi’’ that has seen me through life. For those of you here today that do know exactly what you want to be —doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, etc — I’m so very happy for your certainty and the route to your career being so straight forward. For all of you who achieved or exceeded your exam goals – fantastic, well done! But if you don’t really know what you want to do, focus on all the wonderful things that being at this school has or is giving you: an innate self-confidence, definitely not showing off, but the confidence to stand on a stage at The Sage or in front of a hundred employees or in front of a patient and sound like you know what you are talking about, even though, inside, you are quivering like a leaf and wondering how the hell you got here! A humility; a questioning mind and an articulate voice for it. A real drive to succeed, a belief in what you CAN do. Then it’s down to you. Take life by the horns—grab it—and use these amazing qualities you’ve been given.’’

Inspiring words and an inspiring evening for everyone.

Thank you, Sue.

ART EXHIBITION & ALUMNAE DINNER

You will already have seen some of the stunning Art work from this year’s excellent Art Exhibition on the front and back covers of this Newsletter. It was also good to see many Alumnae at the viewing, which took place immediately before the Annual Dinner. Val Steele was amongst the visitors. We featured Val in the last edition when she discovered the letters she had written to her parents during her

evacuation in Alnwick Castle in the war. Also there were Shirley Baldry, who donates our Art Award each year

and her classmates, Pat Thomas (née Robson) and Vivian Fryer (née Womersley) .

Representatives from many year groups came to the dinner afterwards at Firenze on Osborne Road — 1949, 1950, ‘51, ‘52, ‘53 and ‘56 were all well supported as were 1975, ‘81, ‘82, ‘83, ‘94, ‘95 and ‘96. Next year’s Annual Dinner is on Tuesday, 25th June 2013 and is

back in School again.

OLD UNIFORMS Audrey Marks (née James), Class of 1949, was kind enough to donate some of her old school uniform to the archives. It is lovely to have these items of clothing as they make for interesting displays at Open Day and Leaver Events. We have several tunics and blazers, all sporting House colours and badges and even two summer dresses from the 1950s. I would dearly love to acquire a knitted cloak from the Alnwick Castle days, but fear many of them were unravelled and used to knit up other garments straight after the war. Elizabeth Scott (née Watson, Class of 1941) sent in her 1938 vintage shoe bag to add to our collection, all beautifully laundered and clearly named! Thank you all very much indeed. I have to say that the shoe bags didn’t change much. Mine looked exactly the same in 1965!

However, these bits of old uniform have other uses too! Vanessa Ram contacted me on behalf of her Mum, Patricia Duncan (née Rankin) Class of 1947, who wanted to wear her old school uniform to her son’s 50th birthday fancy dress party!!! We were only too happy to help out with this very unusual request and as you can see from the photos, a great time was had by all.

NEWS IN BRIEF

Thank you to Janice Spencer for sending in a photograph from 1952 with meticulous details on the reverse. You can see it further on in this edition.

Susan Scorer (née Kirkhope) continues to enjoy catching up with her old friend Anthea Pugliese. (nee Pallister) both from the Class of 1959. They are both still in touch with Hazel Hepburn (nee Crosland) and were thrilled with the old 1960 photograph which was reprinted in the previous edition.

Congratulations to Rachael Garden, (née Wylie) Class

of 2005, and her husband, Chris, on the birth of their daughter, Emily.

Thanks too, to Dr Barbara Morden, who is currently sending through a

steady stream of archive material as she prepares to move house. Amongst the goodies so far have been some copies of Prize Giving programmes from the early 1960s, which we had not seen before and a copy of the 1966 Service of Thanksgiving and Dedication held at the Cathedral for those leaving school..

Church High has always had a wonderful reputation for its involvement with Charities, both local and worldwide. We continue to do an amazing amount of fund raising in School . Despite the gloomy economic situation of the past few years , parents and their daughters never fail to dig deep into their pockets and their purses and give up their time to support our efforts.

Since September we have had various events in order to raise money for Mencap, Macmillan Cancer Support, Little Wings, The People’s Kitchen and Children in Need , as well as adopting the Great North Children’s Hospital as the Sixth Form Charity of the Year.

Well over £1,500 has been collected and every single Charitable Institution chosen has acknowledged the School’s support and sent in letters of thanks.

Here Year 7 pupils make 200 pick ‘n mix bags of sweets to sell at the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning held in September.

Pudsey Bear is always a favourite for Children in Need, but this year we have enjoyed all kinds of delicious cupcakes and the bakers promised the staff that they were all very healthy and contained fewer calories than other kinds of cake!

A jolly good marketing strategy there, I feel.

THE RISEBOROUGH GIRLS

The Hollywood career is most certainly blossoming for Andrea Riseborough, ( Class of 2000).

Our very own Tyneside film star is enjoying success with her most recent films — the thriller, ‘Shadow Dancer’, where she plays an IRA terrorist and her latest, ‘Oblivion’, a science-fiction thriller filmed in Louisiana with Morgan Freeman and Tom Cruise. She also made two other films in 2012, ‘Hidden’ and ‘Welcome to the Punch’ with James McAvoy and David Morrissey.

Both films are doing extremely well in box offices around the world, so well that she is fast becoming one of cinema’s most coveted stars. Andrea rarely comes back to Whitley Bay for more than a few days at a time now and is spending more and more of her life in America where she would like to live.

Meanwhile, younger sister Laura’s career is also on the up! At the beginning of the year she found herself cast as Ella in ‘The Glass Slipper’. Ella was a ‘rags-to-riches’ character brought to life in a wonderful musical under the direction of playwright, Stephen Sharkey.

We wish Laura the very best of luck with her theatrical career and hope to see more of sister, Andrea on the big screen very soon. Watch out for more news about these two famous Church High faces across the coming months.

Laura played along side

Will Featherstone in Northern Stage’s ‘Glass Slipper’ and sister Andrea flew in especially to support her younger sister.

Andrea has just been nominated for The British Independent Film Awards, ‘Best Actress’ category for her performance in ‘Shadow Dancer’. The results will be announced on Sunday 9th December.

Good luck!

ALL OUR YESTERDAYS

A 1952 photograph of 2A' was sent in by Janice Spencer (née Rodgers) following on from a picture previously printed, of Miss Ferguson’s 1951 Junior class, sent in by Amanda Nicholas. Amanda, very honestly, admitted to having forgotten some of the names of those present ,but Janice has managed to fill in the gaps!

Amanda Nicholas, Hazel Tomkins, Patricia Wood, Pamela Nusenbaum, Ann Borne, Jacqueline Craighill, Anna Scullard, Margaret Wilson, Susan Dixon Scott, Rosemary Strong

Second row: l to r

Caroline Stamp, Muriel Mills, Janice Rodgers, Barbara Hunter, Hilary Dodd, Miss Ferguson, Angela Brock, Diana Vincent, Hazel Crossland, Judith Graham, Patricia Marley

Front Row:

Susanna Latham, June Hargreaves, Valerie France, Carole Dale.

Janice goes on to say that she remembers in the Christmas term of that year, Miss Ferguson produced a Nativity play with the whole class. She was an angel together with June Hargreaves and possibly Diana Vincent. Judith Graham was Mary, Rosemary Strong was Simeon and Valerie France was one of the Wise Men, blacked up with cocoa! (That was in the days when it was acceptable to do such things! It wouldn’t be allowed now)

‘’The next year, 1952, about half of us went into 2A’ ‘’, Janice continues , ‘’and this is the photograph of us seated on the steps of the Senior School. Miss Dorothy Davis, head of the Junior School, had produced ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ with our class. That year Miss Ferguson had been on an exchange visit to a school in British Colombia and Miss Williams had been our Form Teacher. As she, Miss Williams, was due to return to Canada, Miss Watson, the Speech training teacher photographed us all on the steps following the production, so that she could present Miss Williams with a copy which she had hand tinted! ’’

Janice concludes that Susan Ena Scott played the Emperor and Patricia Marley was one of the rogues.

Goodness! What a great memory!

Thank you so much for all this information, Janice, and I look forward to all the correspondence which is sure to follow the publication of these two photographs.

If you know of any other ex– Church High girls who are currently living or working abroad, please pass on our contact details. It would be good to spread the net even wider and hear their news from far off lands.

Perhaps you are one of our members who has already settled on foreign shores and would like to be put in touch with others living near you, or indeed, perhaps you might like to volunteer to be coordinator for an ‘Alumnae Satellite Group’ in your country? Please let us know. It would not be hard work—simply a hub where we could email news and ask you to pass it on.

ROUGH BOOK JOTTINGS

Ann Wright has kindly sent us some School Magazines from ‘81-’82,

‘85-’86 and ‘87-’88 along with a copy of the Centenary book and

some programmes from the celebrations. She also found the article

printed in the Evening Chronicle on February 9th, 1985 which

featured more of our well known Alumnae—Jenny Lee Smith who

was the North’s No.1 woman professional golfer; former British ice-

skating champion, Karen Wood; Dame Irene Ward who was Tory MP

for Tynemouth and Brenda Calderwood, Principle careers Officer for

Newcastle.

Sheila Bennett (nee Pritchard) also send in a

large package containing more ‘‘goodies’’ .

These were items that had previously

belonged to the late, much missed, Judith

Shaw ( nee Moat) Class of 1957. Judith was one of

those famous

girls who wrote

the song, ‘40

Years On’ - a

reworking of the

original old

school song,

which was lost

long, long ago!

We have misplaced several people over the summer holidays and I can only apologise for the inconvenience. We have also had a good many ‘bounce-backs’ from old, ex-tinct email addresses. Email is a fantastic way to keep in touch but sadly, folk often forget to update us if they change provider or set up a more user friendly account with some one like Google and their Gmail or Hotmail. If you can help reconnect us with any of the following it would be really appreciated.

WHAT’S NEW?

The annual School Production was performed in The Little Theatre, Gateshead

Not only in the newspapers for their Clog-Dancing antics, our Junior girls were also on local television! Visit the website and click on the link to watch the report now.

Page 16: NCHS Alumnai Autumn Newsletter 2012

NEW WHATS?

It was a case of ‘out with the old and on with the new’ as the Junior School embraced their new uniform. Out went the dry-clean only tunics, which had become virtually impossible to obtain for the older Junior girls, and away too with the unflattering PE tracksuits. In came gorgeous, black-watch tartan kilts, easy to launder polo shirts (with the school logo embroidered on them) and a much more user-friendly, versatile games kit. The youngest pupils in Nursery now wear a uniform too — a little tartan tunic with a polo shirt ! For outside playtimes, everyone sports a very useful ,fleece lined waterproof coat. Don’t they look smart?

If you would like to read the most recent editions of both the Junior and the Senior School Magazines, they are available on line at www.churchhigh.com.

Go to INFORMATION and then MAGAZINES and enjoy seeing what is happening at your old school.

You can also see our video ‘’I Used to be Quiet.’’ It features up and coming Musical Director, Claire McKenzie, who has some interesting memories of her time at NCHS. Her comments and thoughts are very much in line with those of Sue Thexton, our guest speaker at Prize Giving, and

Claire certainly has that Church High ‘je ne sais quoi’’!

NEW SCHOOL MINI BUS SERVICE

Everyone here is really excited about the launch of a new mini bus service .

It is aimed at pupils who have siblings at Newcastle School for Boys in Gosforth and should benefit their parents too during week-day, peak, commuter traffic times. The service runs between Tankerville Terrace and West Avenue every morning and evening and so far the take– up has been great and the feedback from parents, very positive! Long may it last.

We also hope, in the fullness of time, to be able to use the silver and green bus for short educational visits and for our sports teams playing their fixtures at nearby schools.

The event has a glowing reputation from previous year’s, but this one is rumoured to have the potential to be the best yet! We are lucky to have secured local singer, Jason Isaacs, as our live entertainment, so don’t be disappointed, book today.

1940s

Thank you to Audrey Marks (née James) for a copy of the 1949 School Magazine and also the 1951

Distribution of Prizes and Certificates presented by the Countess of Tankerville.

Brenda Robson, also from the Class of 1949, has written from Canada asking if anyone has news or contact details for her friends Suzanne Bridget Sherlock (1956) or Marion Howes (1959)

1950s

Dorothy Jenkins (Class of 1956) managed to solve the mystery of who the two ladies pictured in last autumn’s edition, shaking hands on the old playing fields at Reid Park Road. It transpires that one was Miss Mole, then the Deputy Head and the other was Mrs Suzanne Green (nee Robson). The picture was taken at the Staff vs. School hockey match in 1956.

1960s

Sheila Young (Class of 1962) emailed news of her recent marriage to poet, novelist and scriptwriter Rodger Harvey. The service took place at The Assembly Rooms here in Newcastle on April 27th and she has included her postal address if any of her school friends would like to get back in touch with her.

Joan and Ian Thomas (née Fraser), Class of 1965, called into School during their stay in Newcastle. On holiday from their home in Williamstown, Melboune, Ian was attending a

University Reunion for his group from the Chemical Engineering department. Joan took the opportunity to return to her old school and recapture a photograph taken when she was in the Sixth Form up on the top floor in her attic classroom.

1970s

It was good to meet up with Caroline Lloyd-Jones (née Fraser) from the Class of 1975 at the Art Exhibition. Caroline is married to Dr N D Lloyd-Jones who is Chair of Governors at Newcastle School for Boys.

Caroline is third from the left in the front row.

Page 20: NCHS Alumnai Autumn Newsletter 2012

1980s

Sandy Harvey, Class of 1982, has been reunited with school courtesy of one of our Governors. Sandy is heavily involved with the recently opened, high profile, Great North Children’s Hospital where Professor Kath McCourt works, so it was good when Kath discovered that Sandy was an ex NCHS pupil. Sandy and I spent a lovely morning revisiting memories of the old place and it was an added bonus when, just last month, our Sixth Form voted her hospital their Charity of the Year. The girls will hold a variety of fund raising events to support this wonderful new children’s unit as well as include them at their Annual Ball at the Baltic in June 2013.

2000s

Nicola Candlish, Class of 2001, wrote to tell us about her PhD on the History of Electric Music in the UK. Whilst doing her writing up part-time she also pursued a career as a Freelance Stage Manager covering Ballet, Opera and Musical Theatre. Recent work includes touring with Birmingham Royal Ballet; Ballet Central at the Royal Opera House and several tours with Opera della Luna. Nicola has kindly made the offer to mentor any girls at school who think that they might fancy working backstage as a career. What with all these interests you wouldn’t think that Nicola could have any spare time left, but you would be wrong. She is still heavily involved as a Guide Leader and recently took a group of 40 on a trip to Hong Kong!

Congratulations to Amanda Walmsley, Class of 2009, on successfully obtaining a 2.1 in Modern Languages from the University of Newcastle and also to Rachel Hunter, Class of 2008, for being awarded a 1st in Law from Nottingham and being top in her year! Well done, both of you.

The Class of 2002 enjoyed a fabulous ‘10 Year Reunion’ in the summer. Well done to Kiran Jagpal for being the force behind the idea and getting everyone organised. It was great fun and lovely to see so many of you again.

Congratulations to Elizabeth ‘Beth’ Timney (Class of 2006) on her recent marriage to Dr Kristopher Michael Poole. The service was held at St.George’s Church, Cullercoats and afterwards at Jesmond Dene House. We all had a great day, despite the early morning snow showers, and the photographs taken in the Dene with the Autumn leaves in full glory were absolutely delightful!

Editor’s Note: As the Mother of the Bride I am allowed to gloat just a little bit!! Two of

the bridesmaids are Alumnae members - Caroline Summers (2006) and Rachel Timney. (2008)

We also send wedding congratulations to several girls from the Class of 2006. Alice Flint (née Morgan) on her marriage to Jonathan in September, also to Ashley Padmalaya (nee Fenwick-Brown) on her wedding in October and finally to Katy Matthews ( nee Willson ) who got married in November.

Do let us have your Year Group news to include on our CLASSNOTES pages.

Our newsletter is enjoyed by Old Girls worldwide. It keeps them in touch with Church High and with their old friends.

Here at School, we are interested in all your news, whatever the content. It does not have to be about a great academic success or an Honour in the New Year’s List! Often, just plain, old, homely news makes the most interesting reading and touches the hearts of old friends.

Please return this page to the Alumnae Office, or email us, with news or changes of circumstance and we will do our very best to update our database and readership.

If you would like to receive your Newsletter electronically, please make sure we have your correct email address.
