Competing at the College Level

Page 20: NCAA Night Please sign in and take a packet Anna Ferrara 9-12 th grade counselor Last Names: Rosato-S & AVID students NCAA Liaison aferrara@cnusd.k12.ca.us

Determine what schools meet your son/daughters academic and athletic requirements.

Contact those coaches via email or U.S. mail expressing your interest as well as accomplishments

◦ Don’t be afraid to “brag” coaches may not know anything about you unless you list your accomplishments

◦ Send a DVD of your son/daughter competing in their sport

Broaden your search (outside of California) May be able to walk-on as a student-athlete and gain all the

benefits of a scholarship player Be realistic, make sure that your son/daughter’s goals are

within reach, and always have a back up plan.

Where to start

Finding the right college◦ Not only about money, students need to find the

right fit College life, majors, team, coaches, school location,

reputation of team ◦ Make sure to get information in writing (no

student is given a full ride for 4-5 years) Verbal commitments do not guarantee scholarship

must sign official national letter of intent.
