Serial printer uses newhammer printhead

Facit-Addo's new serial page printer, the 4540, uses a printhead that has ham-mers instead of needles or wires. Basedon a stored-force principle, the print ham-mers are mounted on flexible arms heldback by electromagnets. For each impact, the holding current is

cut off and the hammer snaps forward.According to Facit, using a pull-backimpulse instead of a print impluse pro-

duces a tight, small head, guaranteed toproduce 500 million characters or aboutfive years of normal use.

Since the print force is mechanical, thecompany claims that effective power con-

sumption is a fraction of that used byconventional matrix printheads. As a

results, the head has no duty cycle limit, and there are no lubrication or adjust-ment problems. The printhead incorporates six separate

patents and applications, including one

that automatically adjusts the impactforce to the number of copies inserted inthe printer. The microprocessor-controlled Facit

4540 features 12 character sets, includingOCR-A numerics and Katakana, and a

variety of optional interfaces.

BasiclFour system featuresup to 105M bytes of disk storage

Basic/Four Corporation has introducedthe System 610 business computer, an

enhanced version of the Model 600,designed for users who require large stor-age capacity. The System 610 features35M bytes of disk storage in its base sys-

tem, expandable to 105M bytes in threedisk drives.Other features of the transaction pro-

cessing system include an enhanced oper-

ating system and an inquiry/reportingsystem designed to produce special reportsfor critical business situations.A tri-state language processor retains

the on-line programming advantages ofan interpreter and offers the executiontime associated with a compiler, accord-ing to Basic/Four. The concurrent compilertranslates each Business Basic statemententered into internal machine languagewhere whole words are compressed intosingle bytes. The object program may thenbe executed repeatedly without recompil-ing and may be stored for reuse. The pro-

cessor uses the concurrently compiledobject program when applications pro-

gram processing takes place, avoidingrepetitive interpretation of the source

program and eliminating that overhead. The decompiler automatically translatesthe internal machine language back intosource language needed for program modi-fications.A disk subsystem organized around a

programmable bipolar LSI processor

handles many "housekeeping" choresnormally performed by the CPU. The pro-

cessor also performs selected error check-ing/correction routines built into the oper-

ating system and executes test routinesduring the power-up sequence and systeminitialization.A spooling capability allows the user to

create print files without waiting for theprinter to become available. Spooling isaccomplished through a special serial fileand an associated buffer which transferdata for several print lines in a single diskaccess.

The 610 has a microprogrammed CPUdesigned for execution of instructionswritten in Business Basic at a full cycletime of 600 nsec with automatic paritychecking.Minimum configuration is a BFC-manu-

factured CPU with 40K semiconductormemory, one BFC-made video displayterminal, one 35M-byte disk drive, and a

165-cps printer.Maximum configuration is three disk

drives totaling 105M bytes, 96K memory,

eight VDT's, and up to two printers.Magnetic tape cartridges are available

as optional equipment, as well as 150-,300-, and 600-lpm printers.

Price for the minimum configuration is$51,400 with immediate delivery.
