Some General Tips

• Hazard Control Plans (HCPs) are intended to provide general principles and detailed instructions on how to work safely with your biological material. Quantities handled, strains/serovar types, processes, modifications to the agent may all impact the specific risk management strategy.

• All biological materials with an assigned HCP must be listed on an approved Biohazard Use Authorization (BUA) and/or IACUC Protocol, as applicable.

• If you have any questions regarding this application or the program, contact [email protected].

• When a PI adds materials to a BUA, the associated HCPs are assigned to

the laboratory. Labs may also be assigned HCPs based on work tasks.

• It is the responsibility of the PI to review the HCP and add lab-specific

content, assign personnel, and transmit the HCP for review.

• HCPs may be agent-specific (e.g. Influenza Virus) or grouped by hazard

classification (e.g. Aerosolized Transmissible Disease Pathogens).

Based Upon Materials Listed on Your Biohazard Use

Authorization (BUA), You May Be Assigned HCPs

General Information. This section contains general information about the material. It includes the scope of the HCP (material covered, personnel who should be assigned), and in the case of hazard classification HCPs, an example list of agents covered under the HCP. HCPs for infectious agents may include a list of symptoms.

4. Each HCP has a number of core template sections.

Required Training/Approvals. This section contains specific training and approval requirements for handling the material.

5. HCPs include informative sections on basic safety when handling the material.

Administrative Controls. This section contains administrative controls (handling practices) to manage or eliminate risk of exposure. These may include work practices such as handwashing, or avoidance of risk behaviors, such as eating and drinking in the lab.

Engineering Controls. This section contains facility features and equipment which help reduce risks of possible exposure. These can include features such as eyewash stations and biosafety cabinets.

Handling/Special Practices/Purchasing. This section describes special practices (purchasing restrictions, disinfectant considerations, etc.) which the laboratory may need to employ to reduce the risk of exposure during research activities.

6. Further HCP template sections address special considerations the laboratory may need to consider.

Spill Response. This section describes what do in the event of a spill.

Exposure Response. This section describes what to do in the event of an exposure or injury.

Summary section - A short summary on how your

lab is using this material. Consider factors like

modifications to the material (are you using an

attenuated version of a pathogen, or is the

material fixed), handling practices (are you

carrying out aerosol-generating procedures or

using glass), and volumes.

9. These sections allow you to summarize your research.

• Lab Specific SOP• Provide detailed instructions on how to safely work with the biological

material based on details of your research protocol and any other aspects of the specific nature of your research.

• Consider the following when populating this field: quantities, concentrations, unusual or dangerous characteristics or genetic modifications, permit restrictions, where it will be used, scale-up restrictions, engineering controls, administrative controls, work practices, and PPE. It is the PI’s responsibility to provide sufficient instructions in each HCP to ensure safe research activity within their lab. NOTE: Please do not copy existing core template material in this section.

10. Use these sections to communicate safe handling practices to your lab.
