Maths: Describes and makes symmetrical patterns. Art: Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products; Use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences; Use imagination to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. Geography/ RE: Aware of traditions form across the globe and within different religions. Resources Various natural materials such as leaves, sticks, conkers, pebbles, pine cones, acorns, flowers, berries, seeds, etc. Risk Assessments Generic Site RA; Handling Natural Materials RA. Creating mandalas as a form of art therapy can reduce anxiety, tension and overall stress. Explain that the children are going to make their own Mandala patterns using a variety of natural materials. Discuss the safety implications & why natural materials are being used. Discuss rotational symmetry and how to build up their pattern from a central point. Allow the children to make their own mandala patterns & to discuss their designs and what they may represent. Differentiation: HA- Can they create a pattern with different aspects of symmetry? LA- In pairs. Extension: Can the whole group make a large group mandala and talk about ways in which they could reduce any stress and anxiety amongst them? SESSION REFLECTIONS INDIA
