UNIT SUMMARY

This unit focuses on the human body and how we interact with each other and our environment. The brain and the nervous system are explored, together with the five senses and the locomotor system. The unit will interest and engage students as they learn how the body responds to information, how this information is processed and how responses are given. Students will revise concepts which they have previously encountered, but will now focus on these systems in much greater detail. There is a strong element of experimentation in the unit, and students will be encouraged to draw their own conclusions. They will learn about emotional growth, how the brain develops in adolescence and the changes this brings.

VALUES AND ATTITUDES

Students will learn about the body, how it interacts with the world, and will consider ways in which we keep fit and healthy, such as the importance of exercise and diet. They will also consider emotions and mental health. Students will take part in collaborative activities: sharing knowledge and ideas with their classmates. They will draw their own conclusions from experiments, and expand their horizons. Vocabulary acquisition will play a key part in learning and they will have plenty of opportunities to review and revise new language.

Fragile world

Students will learn about mental development and how this affects their emotions. They will be encouraged to think about their mental health, and how their emotional life will undergo a transformation in adolescence. By reading and discussing these issues with their peers they will understand that such changes are normal and affect everyone in this age group.

UNIT SUMMARY

In this unit, students will study the human reproductive system. This includes both the female and the male reproductive organs, and the sexual characteristics of both girls and boys. Students will explore the changes which take place in their bodies during adolescence, learning the causes of these changes and why they happen. This unit also deals with reproduction: exploring pregnancy, the development of the foetus and the birth process. Students will also cover progress in child birth. They will learn about ultrasound scans and consider how advances in medicine have lowered infant mortality.

VALUES AND ATTITUDES

Students will learn about babies and where they come from – a topic which all children are curious about. Students will work individually, as well as in pairs or groups, and will be encouraged to collaborate with their classmates. Students will be asked to analyse information, to discuss it with their partners and / or share ideas with the class. In the science project they will be asked to hypothesise an outcome, and to support their views.

Fragile world

Students will learn about gender equality. They will discover the advances that have been made in this field in the developed world over the past fifty years, but will also consider countries where gender inequality is the norm. Students will consider the causes behind this difference and explore ideas in which they can make a difference to gender inequality.

UNIT SUMMARY

This unit focuses on living things and their characteristics. The students will revise ideas from previous years, but study the subject in greater depth and in more detail. They will study the seven different characteristics which organisms share and the organisation of these organisms into five separate kingdoms.

They will think about how living things are classified and study each group in more depth. They will learn about cells and cellular structures which links in to work in previous units.

They will also learn to identify and classify living organisms by using a dichotomous key. They will also learn about the importance of the process of photosynthesis.

VALUES AND ATTITUDES

The students will learn about the various life forms on Earth. They will see that Homo sapiens fits into the much larger group of the Animal Kingdom and that is just one of the many evolving organisms on Earth. They will see how organisms interact with their environment and with each other and will observe how the basics of life (water, oxygen and sunlight) can create new life forms.

Fragile world

The students will learn about photosynthesis; how the first life forms helped create the atmosphere, the mechanisms that plants use to photosynthesise and the importance of photosynthesis for all living creatures. Students will also consider the importance of protecting green environments and ecosystems.

UNIT SUMMARY

This unit focuses on matter and its properties. Students will revise ideas from previous years, but study the subject in greater depth, and in more detail. They will consider pure and mixed substances, and learn how different mixtures are composed and whether these are homogenous or heterogeneous.

They will learn five different methods of separation, some of which will be put into practice in the experiment section of the unit. Finally, students will learn about the effects of chemical changes on substances.

VALUES AND ATTITUDES

Students will learn about the building blocks of the world around them, the basics of chemistry, and the importance which chemical processes such as fermentation or combustion have in the modern world. They will have a chance to carry out experiments in the classroom and will learn about safety in the laboratory.

Fragile world

Students will learn about safety in the lab, an important lesson for all students who take part in experiments. They will be made aware of the dangers of material which is used in laboratories and the damage it can cause to surroundings or to people. They will also learn how to protect themselves. Although some of the advice may seem obvious to the students, the importance of following safety instructions and guidelines cannot be ignored. Students will be safer and better informed, and therefore able to gain maximum benefits from using the lab.
