NON-RENEWABLE

ANDRENEWABLERESOURCES

RESOURCE

ANY MATERIAL MAY BE TEMRED AS A RESOURCE PROVIDED THAT AN APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY IS AVAILABLE AND APPLIED TO TRANSFORM THAT INTO MORE VALUABLE AND USEFUL GOODS.

What do you think nonrenewable resources are?

Break it down...

Nonrenewable?

Resource?

NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES

A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale

comparable to its consumption. They are limited stock in nature and get regenerated

over a long period of time.

WHEN TALKING ABOUT NON RENEWABLE RESOURCES,THEY ARE OF MANY TYPES

NUCLEAR ENERGYA small amount of radioactive material can be a sources of enoronus amount of energy.

This, thus becomes a principle resource when fossil fuels are depleting at a such high rate.

For instance, one ten of uranium235 would provide

energy equal to that generated by 3 million ton of

coal.Nuclear energy is a

nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is

used, it is gone!

COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS

Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels. About 600 billion tones of coal lies under the earth and now more than 200 billion tons have been used. Coal is the primary source of industrial energy is also a raw material. So it is depleting at a vast rate.

HOW IS COAL MADE ???

HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???

HMMMM....

If nonrenewable resources are resources

that cannot be re-made at a scale comparable

to its consumption, what are renewable

resources?

RENEWABLE RESOURCESRenewable resources also known as future resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time and are available in unlimited quantity.

● Solar Geothermal● ● Wind Biomass● ● Water

SOLAR ENERGY

The Energy from the sun is called solar energy. It is the most potent of all the sources of renewable energy. Roughly 35 % of the total energy arriving from the sun at the earth’s atmosphereis reflected back into space another 18% is absorbed by the atmosphere and drives the wind and about 47% reaches the earth.but only 1% of energy is consumed.

GEOTHERMALEnergy available from natural,

underground reservoirs of steam and hot water is called geothermal

energy.

Advantages

Sources are widely available.

Natural so free of cost and no fuel required.

Cheaper as compared to any other resources.

Drawbacks

Overall efficiency for power production is only 15%.

Not absolutely pollution free.

Drilling is noisy.

Maximum durability of plant is 30-40 years.

Wind energyEnergy from the wind.Wind mills are used to generate mechanical energy which then is converted to electrical energy with the help of generators. Wind are basically wind energy conversion system.

BIOMASS All forms of biological matter living or non-living that stores biochemical energy is termed as biomass. The matter is derived from bioactivities and is present on the surface of the soil.

WATER or HYDROELECTRICEnergy from the flow of water. Various dams are constructed on the rivers in order to produce electricity by flowing water.

CASE STUDY

# Solar energy is used to provide 65% of domestic hot water in Israel.

# The Lux international company, California extracts much of its power requirements using wind energy and solar through collector process.

# Kodya Dam(Maharastra) is considered to be the major cause of earthquake near it.

# Coastal India has been reported to have used wind power for power production.

# The Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear hazards can never be forgotten which still remind one of the misuse of nuclear power.
