Progress Digital Asia

APAN NR area is very interesting in promoting Digital Asia Network in cooperation with GRID working group

It was agreed that specific application areas of common interest (eg Forest Fire, Forest Management and Water Management) would be the best way to expand the success of the DAN

Digital Asia Network (DAN) planning is well underway by NASDA and AIT/ACRORS

A number of publications are planned – including an OGC training course Japan’s Forest Monitoring Prototype System Using Web Mapping

Technology will be available as a DAN demonstration in the near future Volunteer participants are required to support outreach, identifying data,

and developing test-beds Future developments will be announced via the WWW site:

Progress GOFC Fire SE Asia

A number of operational and experimental fire warning systems are supported by APAN partners:

– ANDES– SE Asia Fire Danger Rating System Project– Thai Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment – ASEAN Specialized Meteorological Centre

NOAA/NGDC has developed a prototype online fire information system capable of predicting smoke transport trajectories using fire hot spot data. The system is built using ArcIMS (OpenGIS COTS by ESRI) and the HYSPLIT model. There is a potential test bed activity with Digital Asia Prototype systems.

NOAA’s GOES-9 satellite is being moved to the Asia-Pacific region. NOAA will generate and provide open access to near real time fire data. This will provide regional groups with hourly fire data in preparation for MTSAT-1R.

There is considerable interest in using the APAN Forum as the framework for development of a shared online fire information system for SE Asia – combining the resources and abilities of the many existing systems

– Further discussion should be supported in order to exploit this excellent opportunity

Progress Asian dust and weather databases

Many countries (China, Korea, Japan, etc.) are affected by and are studying the causes, effects and prediction of Asian dust events

New satellite data sources (including GLI on ADEOS-II launched in Dec 2002) offer improved capability at tracking and forecasting and near real time data delivery by network such as APAN is a key for Asian Dust warning

The meeting enjoyed a videoconference to the Korean Meteorology Administration to discuss their advanced efforts in this area

APAN might offer a suitable framework for a cooperative effort towards increased sharing of data, models, processing facilities etc in order to cooperatively address regional-scale problems in meteorology

– It is being discussed whether the APAN can play a role in the next generation of the GTS of the WMO

– CEOS Grid efforts could contribute Further sessions between EM and AG WGs should be arranged to explore

the opportunities

Progress NR/Grid joint session

Emerging Grid applications offer opportunities for regional co-operation in spatial data sharing and applications

Progress being made in CEOS GRID could be extremely valuable for the proposed effort including Asian Dust. NR agreed to keep the interaction between CEOS GRID and APAN activity

Various developments ongoing in member countries (we heard presentations from Japan and Korea – both on agriculture and meteorology applications

The APAN offers an ideal infrastructure to support the associated heavy network traffic

It was agreed that further NR and GRID WG sessions should be arranged to explore opportunities.

– Plus promotion of the cooperation to the AP Grid WG and PRAGMA

Progress EM

Three presentations for information system of Earth observation – CEOS/GISD OpenGIS Web Map Server demonstration at WSSD

(World Summit for sustainable development– Progress report on ASEAN+3 satellite image archive project by

GISTDA– Three dimensional visualization

It was agreed to coordinate ASEAN+3 satellite image archive project with other relevant archive activities.

Conclusions Digital Asia Network offers exciting new opportunities –

expressions of interest in participation are sought

Next steps are necessary to build on the idea of a “Shared Online Fire Information System for SE Asia”

Opportunities exist for APAN forum to serve as framework for cooperation in developing a regional-scale “Asian dust” initiative (as part of broader meteorology scope) The CEOS Grid efforts could contribute Propose to hold the Asian Dust pre-workshop at Busan by EM with AG

Interest in Grid applications is increasingly rapidly. NR and Grid WG efforts are highly complimentary. Further joint sessions will be planned
