We are lucky to be located in a historical building with views of Slater Pond and the changing seasons around it. Welcome back, National Show!

If you have not visited the gallery to see the National Show, find some time before November 24th. For the first time in many years, the RIWS National Show exceeded over 300 entries and many were from around the country. The result is a very good show with amazing talent.

Congrats to all the RIWS members that were accepted. And a special thank you to all the member that entered. It is not always easy to put yourself and your art out there for judgement, and it is hard to get that letter stating that you did not make it in, but you learn something with every painting; you learn something with every show entry. You grow with every rejection and appreciate every acceptance. And the gallery thrives on your support. Thank you.

And as Sam so eloquently stated, “We really value all that you have shared with us, and we hope you will continue to share with us in the future. “

The most difficult part of my job is how consistently I have to look toward the future of RIWS. In total truth, it goes a little against my personality, as I am someone who very much tries to appreciate today. Looking toward the future is not a bad thing, and it’s extremely important to the success of our organization. But it’s equally important to appreciate what is going on today. Today, the National Show is up, the sun is out at Slater Memorial Park and not a work day goes by without someone commenting on the caliber of the work hung on the walls. In so many ways, this truly is our definition of success. Part of my job is to get you excited about upcoming programming at RIWS. This is easy, as I truly love all that we do here. As we wrap up this year and transition into another, I encourage any of you to reach out to me to discuss what you liked and/or didn’t like about our 2017 calendar year. I mean this sincerely; it is important you know that you have a direct line of communication to this organization. To YOUR organization. Until then, let us all look forward to our final open juried show of 2017, the Four Seasons Show! The theme is open to any interpretation you may have of this and certainly don’t feel like you have to capture EVERY season. It can just be one you like. Let’s make this our best and most successful open juried show of this year! Apply online or in person.

Artist Stan Miller stopped by the gallery last month to jury our National Show and to give a well-received workshop and demo on his watercolor methods. The wonderful thing about watercolor is that the artist never stops learning from it. Stan showed his students a new way of looking at the medium that resulted in some amazing student pieces. If you were unable to join us, you can see some of Stan’s tutorials at his YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/user/Stanleylestermiller
