Gas well - Onshore production is located inseveral regions (Bintulu etc.)
At offshore, drilling platforms float on top of the
ocean and are anchored to the bottom. Raw gas is processed in a cryogenic separationplant where the dirt, water and other
hydrocarbons are removed.
Gas is transported over long distances by theinterstate transmission system. The large pipes
are 2 4 feet in diameter and run at pressures in
the 400 1200 psig range.
To maintain the high pressure fortransmission, there are compressors station along
the route.
Storage areas are commonly older exhaustedgas production fields located close to the market
need.
Once the gas reaches the city gate it becomesthe responsibility of the Local Distribution
Company for the final delivery.
The LDC sells or delivers gas to its residential, commercial and industrial customers at a safe and
low pressure.
the journey...
Millions of years ago,
the remains of plants and
animals decayed and built up
in thick layers. This decayed
matter from plants and animals
is called organic material it
was once alive. Over time, the
sand and silt changed into
rock, covered the organic
material, and trapped it
bene ath the roc k. Pre ssu re and
heat changed some of this
organic material into coal,
some into oil (petroleum), and
some into natural gas.
Because natural gas is colorless, odorless and tasteless, mercaptan
(a chemical that smells likesulphur) is added beforedistribution, to give it a distinctunpleasant odor (smells like rottenegg). This added smell serves as asafety device by allowing it to bedetected in the atmosphere, incases where leaks occur.

Finite reserves Although the fuel is clean to burn but still
it has limited reserves where theextraction of natural gas is leaving behindhuge craters in earth.
Non-renewable
The exploitation of natural gas exhaust theexisting reserves that cannot be gainedback.
Explosive
Mishandling of natural gas can explode it.In case of leakage, the natural gas can
burn a whole room or building in no time.
Toxic
Can cause severe health risk if inhaled. The colourless gas can cause deathwithout any warning due to suffocation.
Dthe uses...
W Domestic uses like home heatingand cooling, cooking, fuel for
transportation.
WSteam heat production.
WElectrical eneration.
WManufacturing and industrial useslike producing steel, glass, forest
products, clothing, cement, fertilizer and
petrochemicals.
W Creating polyethylene polymers, which is the most widely used plastic.
Environment friendly
CThe cleanest burning fossil fuel
CIt does not leave behind any unpleasantsoot, ash or odors.
CEmits 30% and 45% less carbon dioxidethan oil and coal respectively.
Economical and efficient
CIt is reliable. The pipeline system cannoteasily be damaged or affected by weather
conditions.CEasier and safer to store.CCost-effective fuel (transports).
An enviable safety record
CAn odorant is added to natural gas byproducer. When the smell is detected, it
signals leakage and must be fixed.

Rdisadvantages...
Natural gas is transported on speciallydesigned ships known as liquefied
natural gas (LNG). LNG is natural gas
that is cooled to -260F at which point
the gas becomes liquid. The volume of
the liquid is 600 times smaller than thegaseous form.
