TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY

1) Most simply duck and cover but if the building collapses they are crushed to death. People who get under objects, like desks or cars, can be crushed.

2) A natural safety/survival instinct is to curl up into a fetal position. You make yourself as small as possible to avoid things falling on you. Get next to a large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a void next to it, like a coach, or large chair.

3) Wooden buildings are the safest type of construction to be in during an earthquake. This is because the wood is flexible and moves with the force of the earthquake. Wooden buildings usually have good survival rates because they are not as heavy as other building materials and the way the wood breaks. Brick buildings usually break into individual bricks. This can cause many injuries from the falling bricks but less likely to squash a body than concrete.

4) If an earthquake occurs at night and you are in bed, just roll off the bed. Lay next to the bottom of the bed during an earthquake do not get under the bed it may collapse on top of you.

5) If an earthquake happens you can try to escape by getting out the door or window.

6)Doorway are not as safe as people think. If you stand under a doorway and the door jamb falls forward or backward you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the door jam falls sideways you will be cut in half by the doorway.

7) Never go to the stairs. They move separately from the main part of the building. The stairs and building bump into each other during an Earthquake. The stairs are a likely part of the building to be damaged. Stairs may collapse when overloaded by fleeing people. They should always be checked for safety, even when the rest of the building seems undamaged.

8)Try to get near the outer walls of buildings if you can not get outside. It is better to be near the outside of a building than the middle of the building. Should be easier to find a route out that is not blocked.

9)Get out of your car. If you are inside your car you could be crushed when the road collapses or other cars fall into your car. It is best to get out of your car sit or lay down next to the it, to avoid being trapped or crushed inside your car.

10) Last if you are in a Coastal area after a earthquake head to higher ground immediately you could have a tsunami coming next.
