REFLECTIONS – Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Jeremiah never wanted to be a prophet because he knew it meant telling people what they did not want to hear. There are times when we are also called upon to say things that people do not want to hear. It can be very hard to speak the truth when it isn’t popular. It is equally hard to hear the truth when we find it challenging or uncomfortable. Reflect on your own experiences. How do you respond to the opportunity to speak a truth that you knew would not be popular? How well did you accept a truth you did not want to hear? How can you become better at both?
“Happy are those who make the Lord their trust.” - Psalm 40:4 Reprinted with permission from S.T. Productions.
Nativity Mausoleum Update Our sales campaign is underway for the construc-tion of new mausoleum crypts at Nativity of Our Lady. The new mausoleum is probably 1 year away from completion, therefore, the small num-ber of unsold crypts that we have in current in-ventory will be reserved for temporary placement for caskets of families who have bought in the new mausoleum and are awaiting completion of the new facilities. We wanted to make this infor-mation known so that you can plan accordingly for your family’s burial needs. If you would like to speak to a salesman from the Acme Mausole-um company, please call the church office for their contact information.
A Birthday Reception for Fr. Ed Degeyter will be held on Wednesday, August 17th after the 9:00am Mass. The reception will be held in the Parish Hall. Finger foods will be served. Knights of Columbus, KC La-dies Auxiliary and Our Lady’s Altar Society are helping organize the celebration. If any other parishioners would like to help, please feel free to do so. Call Nativity of Our Lady Church Office to sign up - 364-8360.
Everyone is invited!
Catholic High Debt Collection Fund Update A number of years ago, the four owner parishes of Catholic High School (St. Peter’s, Perpetual Help, Sacred Heart & Nativity) took out a loan for the construction of the new cafeteria at Cath-olic High School. Every month the four owner parishes send money that is used to pay off the bank loan. Nativity of Our Lady Church sends $1,500 a month to Catholic High to service this debt. The current balance of Catholic High’s loan is $350,000. If everything goes according to schedule, the loan is scheduled to be paid off in December 2017. Fr. Blanda, the Chancellor at Catholic High and the pastor at St. Peter’s, would like Catholic High School to be self-sufficient. Therefore, barring any major catastrophes, the four owner parishes will not go into debt in the future to finance school operations. Thank you for your continued generosity in our Catholic High Debt fund collections and, if everything goes as planned, we will discontinue this collec-tion in January of 2018. Thanks again for your support of Catholic Education in New Iberia.
Fr. Mario Romero, Pastor.
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15th, falls on a Monday for 2016. It is not a Holy Day of Obligation for this year. Please place your Assumption Envelope in the first collection basket of the weekend of August 13th/14th or the 20th/21st.
Thank you for your continued support!
Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church would like to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude to Mrs. Rita Mae Cestia. Mrs. Cestia passed away in December of 2015 at the age of 93. Not having any children of her own, Mrs. Cestia and her husband willed that their remaining assets would be distribut-ed to Nativity of Our Lady Church and The Society for the Propagation of the Catholic Faith. Our share of Mrs. Cestia’s gift came out to $52,300.15. This generous donation will help our parish offset some large expenses that we have incurred or will incur soon. Our liability insurance bill for this year cost our parish $24,854. A recent tree trimming job cost our parish $10,500. A new updated choir sound sys-tem is in the works that will cost our parish approxi-mately $10,000. A church roof repair that will take place in the fall will cost our parish $154,000. Thanks again to Mrs. Cestia and to all of our Parish-ioners who allow our parish to operate and do Christ’s work.
God Bless, Fr. Mario Romero.

Fr. Ed Degeyter Seminary Burse: The Office of Vocations is still collecting for the Burse in Father Ed’s honor. A seminary trust fund is to pay for the diocese’s annual cost of seminary formation. Currently, the interest from the trust pays 20% of this expense, while the remainder is supplemented by funds raised during the BSA Campaign. The goal of the burse is $15,000 which represented the total cost of a single seminarian when it was first established, although today the cost is $200,000. Please make the check payable to: Lafayette Diocese Office of Vocations/Fr. Ed Degeyter Burse # 407: Seminary Burse - Diocese of Lafayette 1408 Carmel Dr. Lafayette, LA 70501
CCD Teachers needed: 2 Volunteer Teachers needed for our 1st Grade CCD Classes. Volunteers need to be practicing Catholics (attend weekly Mass), able to receive the Sacraments, and Safe Environment trained (or we’d be happy to train you). Lessons to children of this age are pretty basic and would not require extensive preparation or experi-ence on the part of the teacher. Teacher’s guide will be provided that lays out everything in detail. Please call Brenda at 365-3759 if you are able to help.
The Eucharist It is called the “source and summit” of our Catholic faith - The Holy Eucharist. But do we really understand its true meaning? In Fr. Mitch Pacwa’s The Eucharist: A Bible Study Guide for Catholics you will see the essential connection between the Eucharist and the Scriptures, and through reflection and discussion you’ll learn to apply the principles in your own life. In this study you will find answers to these questions and more: • Where do we see symbols of the Eucharist in the Old
Testament? • How do the Old Testament sacrifices prefigure
Christ’s sacrifice? • What did Jesus mean when he said “Do this in re-
members of me”? • Why is Jesus called the Lamb of God? • How do we meet Jesus in the breaking of the bread? The Eucharist will change the way you look at the Mass and allow you to meet Jesus as transformed by his gift of life. The Study Groups are available on Tuesdays at 9:00am and Thursdays at 6:10pm. They begin the week of Sep-tember 13th and conclude the week of October 25th. Please call Brenda Romero at 365-3759 to register for this study group.

We are pleased to announce that arrangements have been completed with Acme Mausoleum Corporation to build Phase 4 of our mausoleum here at Nativity of Our Lady. Acme Mausoleum has over 100 years of memorial experience and is the largest builders of mausoleums in the nation. They were the builders of our recent additions to our mausoleum and are here again offering the same trustworthy credentials and satisfactory service. Representatives will be contact-ing our families over the next few weeks to answer questions about the mausoleum and determine who is interested in making provisions for their fami-lies. The number of crypts selected before construc-tion will determine the size of the mausole-um. Spaces are reserved on a first come basis, there-fore anyone seeking information should either mail in the return card from the brochure being mailed to you, or by calling Acme at 1-877-620-7875. To be assured of a selection of your preference, you should reserve your space now. Additional brochures are located at the rear of the church for those who may not have received one in the mail.
Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 14, 2016
Readings and Questions for Faith Sharing When does faith require divisions?
When does it require unity?
Reading I: Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10 • Jeremiah was saved by God. Reading II: Hebrews 12:1-4 • Keep your eye fixed on Jesus! Gospel: Luke 12:49-53 • I have come to light a fire on earth!
Theme: “God’s power among us gives us strength.”
CHILDREN: What is one way you can be closer to Jesus today? YOUTH: We are assured that God will be with us as we go through life, so what strategy do you use to keep God in mind as you deal with the ups and downs of life as a young adult? ADULT: Share about a time when life’s struggles were so difficult for you that you nearly “threw in the towel.” What signs did you see then that God remained with you?
Because our church bulletin is printed out of state, all Mass intentions and announcements should be submitted to the office at least two weeks prior to the requested bul-letin date. Thank you.
