St. Mary School

From the Desk of Msgr. Dan …….

Welcome Fr. Mark Beran. On this weekend celebrating Independence Day in our country we are pleased to welcome a young priest who has dedicated his ministry to serving the St. Augustine Indian Mission in Nebraska. History teaches us along with the Declaration of Independence that freedom is the right of all peoples. Freedom from and freedom for beg the question what does freedom mean to each person. Our Catholic faith teaches that Jesus Christ means freedom. Jesus has given us the freedom not to do anything we want, but to do what we ought to do based on His words and the example of His sacrificial life and death among us. God bless our country and the precious freedoms it bestows upon all of its citizens here, in Nebraska, and everywhere. God bless our country as we citizens strive to protect and ensure the freedom and civil rights of all from conception to natural death. Wishing you a Happy 4th of July, 2021!

The school office will be open on Mondays throughout the summer to sell Scrip from 8:00-10:00 am.

SCRIP puts your regular shopping dollars to work supporting your parish and school with over fifty retailers. Grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, department stores, hardware stores, movie theaters, spas and more!

SCRIP can now be purchased digitally with MyScripWallet.com for your phone and ShopWithScrip.com for your desktop. To get set up, call the school office at (608) 754-5221 x 110.

For 103 years the Mission has continued her work of providing a caring environment and quality education for the Native American children who live on the Omaha and Winnebago Indian Reservations. Fr. Mark Beran can be reached at: [email protected]. Thank you for remembering the Missionary work of the church in the world.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.” (Mk 6:4) ******************************************************* It’s all so ordinary that we can easily miss it. The seagulls hunting and diving for mollusks at the beach offer a display of determina-tion and precision as they gather their food for the day. It’s simply what these creatures do. Yet, there’s a magical artfulness and skill to their work that speaks volumes about the One who breathed life into their being. This is pretty much the way it is with God’s presence. God comes in common ways through common things and ordinary people. Sadly, we are so engulfed in our little worlds of order and ideas to notice the beauty and wonder of it all. Many have numbed themselves to the Divine spark at the essence of all life because that’s just the way it is. What’s so special about it? A sunset is a sunset and a seagull is a seagull. That’s precisely what they thought about Jesus too. After all, isn’t he just the carpenter’s son? What merit can his words possibly have?

If we’re looking for God to come in an event that is so dramatic and intense that it knocks our socks off, then think again. When pondering God’s relationship with His people and God’s action in our lives, we have to go back to the stable and the recurring, creative, unending power of God’s presence. It was a quiet, run of the mill kind of night. There was nothing spectacular or extraordinary. To the naked eye, a woman gave birth to a child and there wasn’t anything extraordinary to see. We have a hard time understanding God’s ordinary-ness. Jesus grew up in an ordinary town, had neighbors and did normal human things. Perhaps that’s why we don’t always like the Gospel. It doesn’t dazzle us with extraordinary things but simply challenges us to take a different look at our ordinary stuff. That makes us uncomfortable. We prefer things as they are. Our lack of faith can even cause us to take offense at what Jesus says and does, dismissing it as folly.

God’s life-giving presence continues to sustain that seagull in

flight and keep all things in being regardless of whether we have the faith to see and understand this. Our personal agendas, preconceived ideas, misconceptions, and expectations can often

cause us to be hardened and blinded to what God is doing or desiring to do. While God continues to do what he has done for all eternity, faith is needed for God’s presence to bear fruit. The

blinders we wear and the expectations we bring to life can often prevent us from seeing graced moments that radiate with God’s

graceful presence. They also prevent God’s transforming, healing, and hope filled vision for our world from being realized. Without faith, God won’t be able to do much for us either.

My Dear Parishioners, It gives me great joy to share with you that our parish now has a subscription to FORMED, a premier online platform filled with over 4,000 Catholic studies, movies, audio dramas, talks, e-books, and even cartoons for our children. FORMED has content from over 60 apostolates, including Augustine Institute, Ignatius Press, and the Knights of Columbus, with material that is professionally produced, engaging, and solid in its catechism. Best of all, this material is free to you. Our parish will be using the material on FORMED to support our ministries and provide continuing education for staff members and parishioners, as well as outreach for our sick and homebound members. Much of FORMED ’s content is available in both English and Spanish. You have easy access to all of the material on FORMED to support your own faith journey and that of your family members.

Are you hesitant to return to the Sacrament of Reconciliation after a long absence? Watch Forgiven: The Transforming

Power of Confession. Would you like to be more confident in answering your teenagers’ questions about the validity of the Gospels? Watch

What’s Happening

Prayer for our Country Almighty God, bless our nation and make it true to the ideas of freedom and justice and brotherhood for all who make it great. Guard us from war, from fire and wind, from compromise, fear, confusion. Be close to our president and our statesmen; give them vision and courage, as they ponder decisions affecting peace and the future of the world. Make me more deeply aware of my heritage; realizing not only my rights but also my duties and responsibilities as a citizen. Make this great land and all its people know clearly Your will, that they may fulfill the destiny ordained for us in the salvation of the nations, and the restoring of all things in Christ. Amen
