fortheNorthsideChapteranyway.

ThePubasitisnowcalled,reallyIthinkneedsagoodfaceliv.Lookingaround,itisfairlyrun

downandIthinkithaschangedhandsafew1mes.IrememberafewyearsagoallofusBruce

HighwayTruckdriverssignedape11ontokeepthe1929ChevTruckontheroofofthepub,but

onenightitjustdisappearedsothatwasthat,andnoneofuswereveryhappyitwasareal

Landmark.Suchashame.

Thefoodwasfairlyordinaryandtherewereoneortwocomplaints,butIthinktheservicewas

preDygood.Itdidn'ttakelongforthemealstocomeouteventhoughwewereuponthethird

floor.Alsothestaffhadtroubleopera1ngthefansandaircondi1oning.Ieventhinkatonestage

theyweretryingtofreezeusoutoftheestablishment.JennyMKIIandIhavingtomoveout

fromundertheaircondi1oningfantootherseats.

Beingonthethirdfloorpresenteditsownproblems-evertriedgoingupnarrowverysteep

(threeflights)ofstairswithafulltrayofdrinks.Itisarealchallenge.WhytheyputusupthereI

wellneverknow,apartfromafewyoungcouplesonthegroundfloor,weweretheonlyonesin

thepub.

Open.SeemsIamnottheonlyTennistragicintheclubandinpar1cularBernardTomicandhow

hisbehaviourwentdownwiththepublictalkingtothemedia,somethinglikecoun1nghis

millionswhilewatchingTV,notthatinterestedintheTennis.Fairdinkum,whatabloodyidiot,

otherwordsstar1ngwithcapitolleDerssuchasDandHwereused.Thisyoungmanhas

representedAustraliainvariouscompe11onsandreally,hehastostartgetnghisacttogether.

ThenMike(Ovens)gotupandspokeaboutwhatweweregoingtodoasacluboverthenext

coupleofmonths,rememberingitisthe60thAnniversaryoftheBugeyeandthatitisgoingtobe

Therewasareallygoodturnoutofcars-580intotal,with17carsfromourClub.Alexgotmostof

theway,butbrokedownatNudgeewithfuelpumpproblems.Heendedupgetngaridehome

withRACQ.

Asusual,theyprovidedafreebreakfastoflovelyfreshlongbreadrollswithsausages,baconand

onion.

Therewaslivemusicby2differentgroupsthatworkedintogethertoplayalotofAustralian

Classics,andbushballads.Raffle1cketswereonsale,butnooneweknewwonanything.

Althoughthedaywasverywarm,theoccasionalbreezehelpedtokeepthingscomfortable.

Theorganisersdidamagnificentjobwithcateringandlotsofcolddrinksabletobepurchased

whichraisedfundsfortheSailabilityprogramme.

Therewere5differentrunsorganisedandwecouldchoosewhichonewewantedtogoon.

AllrunsendedupattheRedlandsSpor1ngComplexforaBuffetlunch.Notmanyofourclub

camebackforlunch,butGary'smateKeithwontheluckyseatprizeofavoucherfor2,Ithinkfor

amealattheclub.

Thefoodwaswonderful,plen1fulandfresh.

Abitofalaughduringlunch,acoupleofladiesdressedupasDad&Daveandwalkedaround,

wishingeveryoneahappyAustraliaDay.Notlongaverthat,therewereanothercouple,one

Thisisanaccountofmyexperienceinreplacinga1275ccclutchcarbonreleasebearingwith

arollerbearingontoastandard1275ccdiscdiaphramcoverplateandaCor1nadiaphram

coverplate.

Theterm"roller"isnotcorrect.Themodernclutchreleasebearingisan"angularcontact

ballbearing"designedtotakelargelateralloads.Howevertheterm"roller"willbeusedin

thisdocument.

Theoriginalcarbonreleasebearingsweremadeofamoredurablecompoundthantoday

andtherollerreleasebearingoffersalongerlifespanthanthecarbon.Ibought(1)aready

madereleasebearingmadeupfroma1098carbonreleasebearing,thecarbonremoved

andamachinedspacerholdingthenewrollerbearingsuitableforaCor1nadiaphram

coverplateand(2)areadymadereleasebearingmadeupfroma1275carbonrelease

bearing,thecarbonremovedandamachinedspacerholdingthenewrollerbearingsuitable

forastandard1275ccdiscdiaphramcoverplate.

The1098hadanangularcontactcurvedfaceballbearingwhilethe1275hadalightshav

ballbearingfiDedontoaflatfacedspacer.

Ihadproblemswithboth.

(1)Cor1nadiaphramproblems.

A.Theclutchpedal"pulsed"whenthepedalwaspartlypushedandthenwouldbe"steady"

whenpushedfurther.

B.Theclutchpedal,at1mes,wouldgosovtothefloorandthenaveracouplepumps

wouldreturnbackhard.

Aver+/-5000milestheengineandgearboxwasremovedtoinspecttheclutch.The

coverplatefingerswerebadlywornandthebearingrunningabitrough.

Conclusions:

A.Thereleasebearingunitmountedinthe1098holderwasfarheavierthantheoriginal

carbonunitand"1pped"forwardres1ngonthediaphramfingerswhichwhenrota1ng

"bounced"thereleasebearing.Thebearing'sweightwasalsowearingthefingersdown.

B.ThespringfiDedinsidetheslavecylinderisdesignedtokeepthecarbonreleasebearing

lightlytouchingthecoverplatediaphramdiscandtakeupanyslackinthelinkages.The

weightofthenewreleasebearingwascausingtheclutchforktobepushtowardsthe

gearboxtosuchanextentthatalltheclutchpedaltravelwasusedtogetthebearingback

againstthecoverplatediaphram.

(2)Standard1275discdiaphramproblems.

C.TherewasanintermiDent"squeak"comingfromtheclutchwhiledrivingandatstopwith

theenginerunning.The"squeak"appearedawhileaverreleasingtheclutchandneverwith

thepedaldepressed.

D.Thetakeupwhenreleasingtheclutchpedalwouldvaryslightly.

Aver+/-2000milestheengineandgearboxwasremovedtoinspecttheclutch.The

coverplatedischadacirculargrovecutintoit.

Bothreleasebearingassembliesconceptswerefinebutneededtoberedesigned.

Cures:

1.Thebearingassemblyweightmustnotbeallowedtocausetheassemblytoleanforward

ontotheclutchcoverplate.

Thiswasovercomebytwoqualityplas1ccable1esontheclutchfork.The1esareini1ally

setto1pthebearingassemblybackwardawayfromthecoverplate.Whenthegearboxis

matedwiththeenginetheclutchforkmustbepushedtoforcethereleasebearingagainst

thecoverplateandmovethecable1estoaposi1onwherethebearingwillrestagainst

them.Themovementoftheclutchwhendrivingwillalwaysmovethereleasebearing

forwardawayfromthecable1esposi1onsothereleasebearingwillalwayscometorest

againstthecable1es.

Thebearingin(1)wasreplacedwithaMGMidget1500ccreleasebearing.

2.CandDtheshavbearingwasreplacedwithaflatfacedToyotaCorollareleasebearing

andanassemblymadeusinga1098holder.

Theposi1onoftheclutchforkbearingholderpivotinrela1ontothecentreofthegearbox

inputshaviscri1caltomaintainthe"arkmovement"oftheforkwhichkeepstherelease

bearingcentredonthecoverplate.Thebearingassemblymachinedspacerthatfitsintothe

originalcarbonholderandsupportsthenewbearingitselfhastobethecorrectlengthto

achievethis.

3.Thebearingmustnotconstantlyrotateandmustbeheldslightlyclearofthecoverplate.

Anexternalspringtopulltheclutchforkbacktowardstheslavecylinderwasinstalled

togetherwithanadjustablethreadedrod"stop"platetoadjustthebearing/coverplate

clearance.

4.Toconteractthe"sideway"weightoftherealeasebearingtakingthebearing"offcentre"

totheclutchcoverplateaspringontothe"stop"adjustablethreadedrodwasistalled.

Themodifiedinstala1onshavebeeninthevehiclesforthreeyearswithoutincident.
